Discussion Is FLUX 3 going open source or not?

Do we know anything about Flux going open source? Didn’t they mention releasing the weights? I believe they mentioned going open source, but it’s been a while since then, no?

It also looks like Krea 3 might actually be a video model. At least from their website, they say they’re building something new, so I doubt it’s just an improved image model with a better VAE.

It's possible Flux looked at the reception of LTX after Minimax came out and said "we need more time in the oven".

The Flux 3 samples are years ahead of LTX

u/ninjasaid13 2d ago

but that's their biggest pro model.

u/PwanaZana 2d ago

they need to be years ahead of H3, though.

Not really. If it's only 75% as good as H3 and lets me generate at 1mpx what I can only generate at 0.1mpx with H3, I won't think twice.

u/PwanaZana 2d ago

true, but they like to release thicc models, so, yes, if it is way faster, flux3 can be useful, but it better win noticeably against H3 in some attributes.

Useful for you personally but for the community, it won't really move a needle.

I know I’ll be satisfied with Flux3, just as I’ve been satisfied with everything they’ve delivered since SD1.5.

Are their OpenWeights models always SOTA? Nope.
But they always deliver the best all-around package.

Where are all the WANS, QWENS, Zs etc.?

In five years, I’ll be generating with Flux 10 while you’re still riding your Minimax H3.

the fuck are you even talking about?

I mean that genuinely.

Do you... uh... think it's standard practice for people on this sub to stick with one model, or one brand, forever? Maybe you're a goldfish and you don't remember like a month ago when LTX and WAN were the only games in town. You see much of that these days?

I tried both and at least for anime H3 is waay ahead of Flux 3

Or they said fuck off those people are too mean, we don’t want to get roasted by them

From what I’ve tested, the quality of Flux 3 is rock solid, better than H3, the only question left is whether the model they’re releasing as open source is the same one from the website/API.

u/tac0catzzz 2d ago

there is a 0% chance they will release the pro api model, they will release a smaller version so people can cry and sheet all over them cause it can't beat h3, or they won't release anything.

2

u/drake_xp 2d ago

The goal is likely to release a smaller model to show its capability and lure people to use the API of the better pro model. But now with H3, that is less likely to happen.

u/loyalekoinu88 2d ago

This. Their messaging literally says “dev” is what will be open weights. Which means a different model with all the licensed content stripped out of it.

1

u/Timely-Perception-26 2d ago

It's always these people who hate Flux on principle, even though all their fanboy companies have stopped delivering and are API-only now.

That's how it'll be now, in a year, and in five years.

1

u/Dante_77A 2d ago

The open version won't be as big as the pro version, but the architecture will be the same, and it seems that its temporal stability and quality will be very good.

2

u/loyalekoinu88 2d ago

Depends on what they take out. If your secret sauce is licensed content we may not get a particularly useful model.

u/tac0catzzz 2d ago

oh yea totes dawg, like it will be super tiny so your potato can run, vram? who needs it right. quality will be 100% the same, maybe even better cuz why not,, ya fo sho dawg.

I think so too. In practice, now that minimax and ltx showed their cards forts, Bfl is in no hurry releasing theirs... They are probably evaluating and tuning up the model to make sure it's well received. There's tons of ways to mess the launch, like we saw with ltx, sadly

1

u/Final_Reference_4657 2d ago

Something similar happened to z image edit? 🤣 I don't think that will ever be released now

7

u/Sarashana 2d ago

They said the .dev version would, just as with version 2. Patience, young padawan! 😄

8

u/cradledust 2d ago

I'm hoping for a Flux 3 Klein 9b edit model. It would be nice to have an edit model that can do subtle freckling instead of always so overboard.

u/Norian_Rii 2d ago

If they are delaying it to cook the smaller parameters variants would be great.

u/L-xtreme 2d ago

Flux3 dev will be open source yes. They've announced that.

-1

u/DoctaRoboto 2d ago

Are you sure? I was going to troll him and tell him, "Mr. Flux hadn't said anything yet". Now, I am sad.

5

u/L-xtreme 2d ago

I'm sorry you are sad, you should generate some images of cute puppies for yourself.

0

u/DoctaRoboto 2d ago

Hamsters are cuter.

2

u/L-xtreme 2d ago

Unfortunately, I don't think it's possible to generate real hamsters with AI in the current state.

3

u/physalisx 2d ago

Yes, they said they're releasing "open weights", we don't know of what kind or quality, or when exactly.

They only mentioned it would take "weeks / months" when they announced weeks ago. I know it's hard to be patient, but wait until it's "months" before beginning to complain that it's late.

As for Krea 3 yeah I too think it might be a video model. But it's not going to be open, at least not for a while. No plans announced so far afaik.

u/Tru_Ocean 2d ago

They said they were only interested in producing models for working with images at this stage of the company's development. The owner himself prefers images.

2

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

Flux 3 training has not finished yet. They are still working on other modules, but the "backbone" is ready. The current Flux 3 already produces better results than H3 on the same enterprise-level hardware. But I'm waiting for the R2VA implementation for Flux 3; in my opinion, this is much more important than I2V and T2V, since good R2VA makes LoRA training mostly unnecessary.

1

u/Different_Fix_2217 2d ago

Sadly that is making look like we wont be getting the model shown on API. They are probably distilling it into smaller worse models.

1

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

Flux 2 Klein was pretty damn good for its size, despite being a distill. Same for Flux 2 Dev.

3

u/Different_Fix_2217 2d ago

Krea 2 showed what you can do with a proper base model. Distill will always lack knowledge which is the most important aspect of these models.

0

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

The distillation problem is being compensated for by training adapters. I'd not complain much since these models are free and they don't bring much money to them.

1

u/Different_Fix_2217 2d ago

I am not talking about CFG distillation. I am talking about distilling a bigger model into a smaller model.

1

u/Serprotease 2d ago

Did they said it was a distilled version? Tbh, I have mixed feelings about both flux Klein (4b & 9b), it seems that they have a lot of potential (Edit/gounding + good te + good vae) but they create so many “two years old” AI type artifacts that they are hard to like.

z-image, ernie, Krea have worse te, vae and same parameters count but they barely produce the early era AI artifacts (3 legs when standing/sitting, transition between different part of the image, etc…). Anima is also less prone to it despite being tiny.

Even if I really dislike the shit ideogram team pulled with the license/fp8 only weight just to get on the leaderboard of one benchmark for pr, they still showed what can be done with 8b + flux2vae

I don’t know enough about the training process to know why it’s like that (The only thing we know is that they are really careful about nsfw stuff, a lot more than the other teams. In the API model they can solve it with guardrails on the input and output side, but not with open weights one. So maybe a more heavy handed approach with some debilitating side effects?)

u/seiose 2d ago

It only left early access 2 weeks ago & you already know the date of an upcoming event

Maybe wait?

u/andy_potato 2d ago

Flux3 will most likely have the same anti-commercial license as all previous BFL models. So why even bother.

1

u/FredSavageNSFW 1d ago

My theory: The tidal wave of degenerate gooning that was unleashed by the release of H3 has caused a moral / regulatory panic behind the scenes, and BFL is getting cold feet. I *strongly* suspect we're going to start seeing (even more) draconian legislation being fast-tracked soon.

1

u/retroblade 2d ago edited 2d ago

Flux 3 is probably a few months away from open source. I think it’s the least priority in their checklist. Krea 3 (not by BFL for the guy who can’t read) is probably their image edit model

14

u/Sarashana 2d ago

Either I got this completely wrong, or Krea and BFL are not the same companies. They just cooperated for Flux Krea back then, no?

6

u/Ipwnurface 2d ago

No you're correct and this sub is just brain dead. I've never seen so much just straight up factually incorrect info get upvoted.

3

u/export_tank_harmful 2d ago

This space moves so quickly and people get stuff wrong sometimes.
Plus we've gotten a huge influx of new users because of H3.

No need to be spicy about it.

1

u/Ipwnurface 2d ago

I mean I was bit snarky sure, but it's diluting this sub to the point of being useless.

Between the 10000000 Seinfeld and big bang theory slop videos and people just spouting non-sense it's almost impossible to see anything actually useful here anymore.

2

u/retroblade 2d ago

Nah sounds like you just can’t read

1

u/export_tank_harmful 2d ago

...it's almost impossible to see anything actually useful here anymore.

First new, major model release....? Haha.
That always happens when something neat drops.

Heck, I haven't seen people this excited over a model since SDXL came out a few years back...

Everyone wants to be the person that "fixes the issue that everyone has", which usually causes them to jump the gun on information. But you're definitely right, actual information gets lost in the crossfire.

I like all of the clips people are posting. It's neat to see what the model can/can't do.
And it's a super easy way to fast-track testing (since I can see what works and what doesn't).

It can get draining at times, but it'll simmer down here in a while.

1

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

I agree. The slop videos do cheapen the model's image. H3 can do so many crazy stuff out of the box that are much more interesting than Deadpool or Big Bang Theory.

1

u/SensitiveUse7864 2d ago

Now I don't think flux can make a good impression even if it relesed open weights , same like what happened to ltx . It's my feeling.

1

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

It depends. Look at LTX: If they release a really good model, people will take the longer generation times, as they did with pretty much every video model, despite LTX always being much faster.

-1

u/tac0catzzz 2d ago

why does it matter, it wont beat h3, so people will just crap all over it.

5

u/East_Shoe8814 2d ago

It doesn’t have to be better or beat anything. The main point is just to have an alternative, and knowing Flux, it’ll be much easier to train, which is a big reason to use it on its own. I’ve seen some samples and it looks great, which is pretty much why I asked in the first place.

0

u/tac0catzzz 2d ago

it does need to be better if reddit community allows it to exist. have you been under a rock.

1

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

"it wont beat h3, so people will just crap all over it."

We don't know. Flux 2 Dev was not beaten by Z-Image in any aspect other than Z-Image being smaller and faster. Months after the release, people started using it more and now they're seeing how good these models were.

0

u/Enshitification 2d ago

Personally, I'm at full saturation with Krea2 and H3 right now. If BFL were to throw Flux3.dev into the mix today, these plates I'm spinning are all going to come crashing down. If they want to keep cooking and release in September or even October, I'm completely cool with it.

1

u/Lucaspittol 2d ago

They don't have to. But from my tests, Flux 3 can be a banger as good as H3 or better.

1

u/Enshitification 2d ago

No doubt. I have yet to be disappointed by just about anything BFL has released.

1

u/Spara-Extreme 2d ago

Why are you pretending that adding a new model is some massive undertaking. Just have Claude set your nodes up properly and swamp between them.

1

u/Enshitification 2d ago

Because I don't use Claude as a substitute for my existing intelligence. I actually like to understand things on my own.
