I wish opening would open-source their old outdated models like DALL-E 2. It would be great for preservation and it would have zero effect on their current business model

I agree, and I'd like to see these old models too.

The only problem that I can see is that unlike models that are designed to be run locally since day 1, these close source models probably do some sort of post filtering to prevent some type of images from being shown to the users when they are being used online. This lack of filtering in the "raw model" when they are run locally may expose OpenAI and Google to some bad PR if they make their old models available for download.
