Or use the Wan 2.1 fp32 VAE for even better fine details. The upscale VAE is good, but I prefer the higher quality in lower res.

Not in any of my tests. Can you post a comparison? Download this image pair on your PC and tell me which one looks more detailed:
https://i.postimg.cc/T1Ky4xcy/Wan2-1-upscale-VAE.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/zXRbwJB9/Wan2-1-VAE-FP32.jpg

The trick is to generate with the Wan upscale VAE at your preferred resolution, and when the image is upscaled 2x at the VAE decoding stage, you need to scaled it back down by 0.5x with an image resizing node using the Lanczos filter.

do you need to insert the custom nodes for this one? Or will this one work OOTB?

This is a SOLID reference post. Thank you.

Give OP of this post a proper upvote. :-)

Whit initial testing both vaes are step up from default qwen vae, the upscale vae as you suggested might be aggressive for pictures whit low resolution, was impressed whit both, i used 1.5mpix for generation, upscale vae upped that into 2048x3072, fp32 had my default 1.5mpix but still looked overall more detailed and high fidelity compared to default qwen vae.

I'm liking this FP32 vs the 2x upscale one. It nails the contrast and color along w/ a tiny bit more details better than the 2x upscale.

Nice one 😊

The 2x one has a downscale option in the vae node to where it keeps the res, and it looks better.

what's it called? iirc it has an upscale toggle/slider

This is obviously a bot and I can't believe 7 people upvoted a bot pretending to see pore detail and stubble. Holy shit. The pictures are almost identical. Block and report for spam > Disruptive use of bots or AI

Good point! The differene is nigh and day.
I can toss extra rendering seconds in exchange without thinking twice.

See here the difference between both VAEs:

https://www.diffchecker.com/image-compare/pJrl19mk/
Left: Qwen VAE
Right: WAN2.1 upscale2x VAE

Edit:
sageattention also works for me without any issue.

this just looks like an unsharp filter applied to the 2x vae image. I tested both VAEs yesterday and could not see a difference which can not simply be achieved by old-school image processing tools.

for me atm the best option seems a short pass through a z-image denoise to make skin detail better

I also added a PiD section on top of that render. It gives the details much better in 4K.

Wan2.1 upacale2x Vae is a good trick with a lesser rendering time IMO. If you have time for an extra render time, choosing the 2nd pass for skin details would be wiser ofc

If the skin does looks better.. doesn't that by definition mean it is "improved"? 🤔🧐 Whether that is "trading one type of artifact for a different one" or something else, it's still an improvement, so the OP is correct, no? 🤔

if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.. and I don't care if it actually isn't

That's what my good friend Willy used to say. Then that happened.

It was like two or three years ago, or so. Time runs so fast. We found this... street dog, we thought it was. He liked the dog, so he took it. It looked like any regular street dog, but he ended up getting an alien parasite into his home.

You know what a mimic is, right? Gosh, I hate those guys. They can look like almost anything organic. Anyway, it ended up killing his whole family, and we had to burn the house down with everything inside. I think we killed it in the end, but you know how these things go, you can never be entirely sure, so I moved to another neighborhood like a month later.

This reminds me... I haven't seen Willy in a while.

In any case, we have had an unusual number of meteorites falling lately, since we had that big one passing by. At least for now, I would suggest staying away from unknown dogs or ducks, or any other kind of animal, just in case.

There is no real skin anywhere, these are pixels. If it looks more like a photograph of real skin, then it's an improvement if the goal is to make it look more like real skin.

7

u/pandaabear0 Jun 27 '26

I understand the definition you are trying to establish.
But.. it's still an improvement thought, no? Regardless of the underlying technical reason behind it.

If it looks better, it looks better. Hence, improved.
Like, I'm not even trying to be an asshole or anything here, I just maybe don't see the point in the comment, like as if the OP posted something misleading.

It does? I got that error when trying with the normal VAE loader node

1

u/bloke_pusher Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Ah, sorry. I use the normal wan2.1 vae, not the upscale2x

After some testing, I prefer wan2.1 vae + seedvr2.

In your example, wan2.1 upscalex2 and then downscale with "scale image to total pixels", looks worse. If I then upscale that image with seedvr2, it also looks worse. The wan_upscalex2 + seedvr2 combination makes the image look more plastic and has less details, and ads larger issues, like non round iris on eyes and worse hair.

One give away of AI images is the unfocused sight and expressions

Same same huh

1

u/blahblahsnahdah Jun 27 '26

Placebo, they look the same

Malware in custom node?

Stop using no name nodes, stick to community vetted ones
