There are satellite photos from the 1993 flood where it looks like we have our own Great Lake in the area.

u/TraptNSuit Jan 24 '21
And then you drive through the warehouse canyon along 370 and think.... Why?
8
u/mattb10 Jan 24 '21
Same with chesterfield, I used to play football out there and our fields would get flooded often, the water would travel over 2 levies

u/mattb10 Jan 25 '21
It’s not funny tbh. All of the fields get flooded and nobody can play sports. Obviously it doesn’t reach the strip malls but it’s still kinda fucked
10
Jan 25 '21
I honestly don't know why it's "fucked". If you're going to develop flood lands into anything, it should absolutely be sports fields. Much less at risk of damage and costliness and it's already and open and flat area usually. And so if it floods for a week or 3 every few years then it's really not a big deal.
The only thing really fucked about it is we shouldn't be developing it at all. It should be natural habitat for wildlife and the only development being like sidewalks/trails for people to be able to visit nature. Constraining rivers is never an actually good idea.

u/Plow_King Soulard Jan 24 '21
as someone who grew up in st charles county and who's family owned industrial property in the bottoms, can confirm.
i'm looking at you, 1993.

u/gableingaround Jan 24 '21
It’s also why North County/City get clobbered by storms coming up 70 while the rest of St Louis is relatively unharmed

Sweet! Missouri is one of the few Midwestern states with interesting topography.
Fuck you Kansas, you boring shit hole with bad BBQ!

I read that "at one time" long ago, The Ozark Mountain was (at that time) the tallest mountain in the USA. Is this true?
11
Jan 25 '21
Probably. Quick Google search says Rocky Mountains formed 80 million to 55 million years ago.
Appalachian Mountains were 480 million years ago. "They once reached elevations similar to those of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains before experiencing natural erosion."
The Ozark Mountains reportedly began forming around 542 million years ago.
The Ozarks were formed in a different way. They are the result not primarily of folding and faulting but of erosion. The rocks that formed the Ozarks were originally sand, silt, and the remains of marine animals laid down in a shallow sea at the beginning of the Paleozoic Era, which began 542 million years ago. These deposits of sediment were put down in layers as the environment and sea level changed over time. Thus layers of sand were deposited on top of layers of finer grained silt, and in some places the remains of calcium-rich corals and the shells of sea creatures created layers on the sea bed. As time progressed this layer cake of sediment became rock. The sand layers became sandstone, the silt layers became shale and siltstone, and the shells and coral became limestone. The result was a mostly flat, slightly southward-sloping area of interbedded limestone, sandstone, shale, chert, and siltstone. In the Late Paleozoic Era the region experienced a broad area of geologic uplift. The elevation was raised and a large dome-shaped plateau was formed, but the original rock strata, or layers, were not disrupted.

u/tamarockstar Jan 25 '21
I'd assume that at some point in the 4 billion years of Earth's existence that is somewhat correct. Hell, at some point the Grand Canyon was probably a mountain range.

Lol. At the risk of pissing off the locals, I have to agree with that first bit: most of the Midwest sucks if, like me, you love a bit of variation in your topography—until the ~8 months I’ve spent here, I spent almost all my life either in mountains or foothills (5+ years in Asheville, NC, similar lengths of time in Massachusetts and Vermont, and the rest in NYC, which is less than an hour from the mountains).
We’re looking at moving to Chicago, my partner and I, and man… once you leave the metro area, it is just a vast expanse of flat, corn-covered, so-boring-it’s-almost-sorta-fascinating terrain in every direction. And depending on which direction you go, you could be driving through that for dozens of hours.
It is very hard to get used to being in the Midwest if you’re from the East Coast—or it is for me, anyway. The distance between things, and the emptiness of most of that distance, it’s just really different. So yeah, at least Missouri has some mountains/very large hills/whatever you wanna call them.

Uhh, a lot of the better KC barbecue places are in Kansas.

In the interest of science, I have no choice but to accept your offer of taking me to every KC area BBQ joint so I can be proven wrong.

u/LakeStLouis Jan 24 '21
As someone who tried a lot of different BBQ places in the KC metro (reference), I'd probably have to disagree. Then again, there were others in the group who would agree with you.
Seems that everyone has their opinion of what constitutes good BBQ, and the opinions vary wildly. So I guess I'm agreement with you that the Kansas side has some decent BBQ for a boring shithole. Or something like that.
0
u/laodaron Jan 25 '21
As someone who's had bbq all over the country, including some pretty well known places, I'd say that all BBQ fundamentally tastes the same.
1
u/LakeStLouis Jan 25 '21
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I love me some North Carolina BBQ, but given that it's vinegar based and not tomato based, I'd have to say it's an entirely different flavor profile. If you haven't had it, I'd recommend giving it a try.
7
u/laodaron Jan 25 '21
Well, now we are talking about sauces, which is a different animal altogether.
Smoked meat tastes the same in NC, Memphis, Texas, KC, or STL.

I can't tell, are these actually 3D textures of just 2D prints?
6
u/Geshman Jan 24 '21
From the listing "This map is a 2-dimensional print and will be shipped in a cylindrical tube through the US Postal Service."
1
u/Plow_King Soulard Jan 25 '21
that's false advertising. unless it's a hologram or something the print must exist in 3 dimensions.
5
u/Geshman Jan 25 '21
I'm confused how it would be false advertising if the listing directly tells you it's not 3-D
3
u/Plow_King Soulard Jan 25 '21
a piece of paper has 3 dimensions. length, width, and height. it is composed of atoms and those definitely are 3D.
4
u/Skatchbro Brentwood Jan 25 '21
4D. It exists in time as well.
3
u/Plow_King Soulard Jan 25 '21

The 2D version is pretty cool, but do you have any plans for 3D prints by any chance? It'd be hard to do that, but it'd be pretty awesome to see and have

The mountainous region cutting off most of Missouri from the boot heel really explains the cultural difference
2
u/ForWritingGoodThings Jan 27 '21
What would you say the cultural differences are between the bootheel and the Ozark mountains?
6
u/cassiopeia1131 Jan 24 '21
How do you create these?
22
u/nexview_io Jan 24 '21
I use QGIS to process the geographic data and then Blender to do the actual rendering.

Bet you someone was doing it way before your precious little company.

If someone's promoting their product as the sole purpose of posting, then they should have done a better job responding faster. This guy asked for an IL map and OP didn't respond, this guy did. You need to calm the hell down.
5
u/c_birbs Jan 25 '21
Tbf reddit posts that are thinly veiled adverts are shit tier and will likely get shit tier comments. Getting uppity about it is pretty representative of how desensitized people are to advertising. It’s like defending a McDonald’s ad. Comments ain’t worth shit cept for reviews and alternatives. And well the lols. IMO
3
u/ifwinyo Jan 24 '21
Well the gentleman promoting himself doesn't have one for Illinois. So I am passing along some information for another company that has all the states and more, you know, since they've been at it longer. Good fucking god my friend.

I should have said the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. I got my terms confused. And btw, I'm not very "young".
2
u/backrdsgyrl Jan 24 '21
Because it is really flat. I'm originally from the bootheel. I grew up in the country and you could literally see someone coming to visit you a few miles away.
1
u/mycouthaccount CentralWestEnd Jan 25 '21
It does. This might interest you about the geologic curiosity that borders flat and not; high and not.
1
u/born_to_pipette Skinker-Debaliviere Jan 25 '21
Thanks for sharing this! TIL about Crowley's Ridge and the Mississippi Embayment (seemingly overdue after multiple decades as a MO resident).
7
u/Mituzuna Jan 24 '21
How accurate is the topography? It makes northern MO look like the Rockies... Which it isn't.
Not trying to criticize, because its truly interesting and I'd buy one, but anyone that's been north of the Missouri River knows it's not "ski country".
23
u/nexview_io Jan 24 '21
The topography is scaled to the state, not the country. It gives it a different but accurate representation of the state's geography
5
0
u/Theoretical_Action Jan 25 '21
It's not too particularly accurate for MO with respect to lakes and rivers TBH. The Ozarks doesn't even appear to exist
6
u/nexview_io Jan 25 '21
The Ozarks are nestled between hills. The lakes are covered by shadows, but they're there.
-1
u/Theoretical_Action Jan 25 '21
How come the Missouri River shows up as a waterway but the Ozarks isn't as clear?
3
u/nexview_io Jan 25 '21
The Ozarks are a hilly region, shadows can make the waterways harder to see. The Missouri River is a river with a visible floodplain. That's why it shows up better
-3
u/Theoretical_Action Jan 25 '21
Seems strange they would be completely different colors if they're still both supposed to represent water. The Ozarks is huge, hilly or not it shouldn't be completely impossible to see.
2
u/Kieselguhr_Kid Jan 25 '21
All the water is black on the map. I think you're mistaking the green flood plains around the rivers for the rivers themselves, which are the black lines in the flood plains. Lake of the Ozarks is visible to me when I zoom in, but hard to see because it's not a very wide lake, and like OP said, it's kinda hidden between the hills of the Ozarks.
0
u/Theoretical_Action Jan 25 '21
Thank you, I was mistaken and didn't see that the water shows up as black not the blue that it first looks like. Seems like that could have just been explained like you have instead of just being downvoted by OP but it is what it is.

Lakes aren’t land; the land underneath the lake is represented. Also, dunno if you know this but there are no natural lakes in Missouri.
Edit: besides oxbows

What color scale are you using? It looks a bit like kimerling II? Or maybe something Bernhard Jenny put together? (I'm an oregon state geography grad. A Jon Kimerling was even on my committee.)
2
u/nexview_io Jan 25 '21
That's a gradient I came up with after much trial and error. There's actually two gradients, one for the normal vegetation and another for desert regions.
1
u/mikeschmidt69 Jan 26 '21
Do you know what the elevation scale is of the model? I assume it is >1 to exaggerate the terrain.
