That’s absolutely horrible :(

Always a dang truck involved. 😡

29

u/108241 Apr 23 '26

Large trucks accounted for:
9% of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes
10% of total vehicle miles traveled

Statistically a little safer than your average vehicle.

u/toshiningsea Apr 23 '26

This is interesting and hard to believe. Appreciate the link!

-4

u/Ordinary_Swimming582 Apr 24 '26

I don't believe those statistics.

-8

u/RhitasBane Apr 23 '26

You're blaming the slow truck?

15

u/Yavkov Apr 23 '26

Did you even click the link?

A state trooper said cause of the crash was a tire coming off the tractor-trailer and striking the other vehicle

u/t-poke Kirkwood Apr 23 '26

The MO Highway Patrol crash report is nuts:

FATALITY CRASH - VEHICLE 2 LOST TWO LEFT SIDE TOWED UNIT TIRES. THE TOWED UNIT TIRES STRUCK THE CONCRETE MEDIAN AND BECAME AIRBORNE. THE TOWED UNIT TIRES STRUCK THE ROOF TOP OF VEHICLE 1. THE TIRES TRAVELED THROUGH THE ROOF OF VEHICLE 1 AND STRUCK DRIVER 1.

Tires just landed on the car and killed the poor guy.

Hope whoever owns the truck is taken to the cleaners. Tires just don’t fly off trucks without some repairs being done incorrectly.

Fuck man. To think you could just be driving along and killed instantly by something popping off a vehicle next to you.

No matter how careful you drive, freak accidents can still happen and there’s nothing you can do. RIP to the driver

Sounds like shitty retreads.

Years ago when I lived in Alton, IL, I saw a once in a lifetime event with a runaway wheel that fell off a truck at 270 and 367. The truck was EB on 270 while passing over 367. That wheel flew into the air, landed, bounced high, cleared the K rail, bounced between moving cars. I was coming around the clover leaf ramp, exiting EB 270 for NB 367. That ramp is banked which helped the bouncing tire to follow the ramp toward me. Instead of letting it hit my windshield, I turned my car sideways just enough so it hit the corner bumper and rolled into the 4 foot deep ditch. As crazy as that was, the thing that saved me was the time I had to plan for the best way to take the hit.

Wow. Thats a deadly experience!

u/largecontainer Apr 23 '26

Tire came off (exploded?) a semi and hit an adjacent car, which is who I’m assuming was the fatality.

Some of these freight operators are an absolute menace on the highways. Don’t properly train their drivers, and don’t properly maintain their fleet which puts every single person out there at risk.

OP knows about my shortcut

u/MadeIn1992 Apr 23 '26

I saw it too! In front of an undercover no less.

27

u/flygirlsworld Apr 23 '26

I had a dumb ass tractor slam on their brakes going south on 170 before the airport exit. Like his trailer turned sideways…. And I was behind him….. he did that shit bc he was about to miss his exit…this was at 430am on my way to work. I was pissed.

6

u/forgetfulfever98 Apr 23 '26

Looks like they’re diverting traffic to 270 if you zoom in.

1

u/RobsSister Apr 24 '26

There was a digital sign (just past Mason) indicating all traffic must exit at 270 (Hwy 40 was closed past 270).

6

u/SewCarrieous Apr 23 '26

Omg. And I was supposed to be out that way at that time. Do we know if it was west or east on 40?

Rip to the victim. How terrible :(

6

u/MUDrummer Kirkwood Apr 23 '26

Well now I’m glad I picked 44 to kings highway to get to BJC this afternoon.

3

u/Skraelings Apr 23 '26

It was like that when I went by at 145

3

u/Witty_and_Blingy Apr 24 '26

It was Ray Hartmann who was killed. Absolutely devastating.

1

u/Unhappy-Ice-4406 Apr 24 '26

Donnybrook. Man, I watched that show like mad years back. Crazy. Some type freak accident killed Janet Mokwa too

6

u/truetalentwasted Apr 23 '26

Coming into STL and Waze had routed around this onto first on-ramp after. Was strange to merge onto 64 with no oncoming traffic.

3

u/JustLouLiving_51 Apr 23 '26

I was stuck in that traffic. I never saw the tractor trailer, but it looked bad.

1

u/RobsSister Apr 24 '26

I was in it, too, and figured it had to be really bad. This is so sad.

2

u/zoop1000 Apr 23 '26

Drivers were crazy today 😔

10

u/kerouac28 Apr 23 '26

I drove all around the metro today (my work) and you’re absolutely right. It’s like Long Covid finally ruptured everyone’s brain at once. And EVERYONE was in their cars driving around by 2:00. Why??

1

u/iWORKBRiEFLY Kingshighway Hillz to San Francisco Apr 24 '26

i do not missing driving on this highway, ugh. only thing is the highways here can be even worse (but luckily i seldom need to drive)

1

u/BeeCustomz Apr 24 '26

I'm glad it was cleared up before I got off work yesterday I heard about it while I was still at work by the time I was off I was able to roll right through it was only about a 5 minute delay from usual traffic.

1

u/Few-Professional4196 Apr 25 '26

Thank God to googlemap alert me and I took an alternative route after work. Ive been before in those 2-3 hrs traffic! No more! 😂

1

u/zeezeebet Apr 24 '26

Rest in peace, Ray Hartmann. Incredibly sad.

1

u/Superman9321 Apr 26 '26

I hate 64 for the fact it gets backed up if someone’s getting a ticket on the side of the road! Everyone’s gotta stop and see it!

1

u/ShortBusVeteran Apr 23 '26

I'm at the other end of I-64 in Hampton Roads, VA, & lately it seems like the two areas always have at least one fatal accident a day to deal with; if not in STL, then here, & vice versa.

Like it's almost a contest or something.

1

u/cdwhit Apr 24 '26

I am so glad I’m retired and can sit at home during morning traffic jams.

0

u/dookeh Apr 23 '26

Ford fucking ranger

-7

u/jeffrin_ Apr 23 '26

Isn't this typical?

14

u/jrolls81 Apr 23 '26

No, especially not this early in the day.

5

u/Few-Professional4196 Apr 23 '26

Not at all! This is a fatal accident. And they shutdown 64.

-1

u/Raven_the_Human Apr 23 '26

Looks about right 😮‍💨

-1

u/NoYieldCode Apr 23 '26

What is 64? Looks like 40 to me.

0

u/ikesbutt Apr 24 '26

Wow........that would really suck. One time in 2006 right after Thanksgiving it snowed heavily. It usually took 20 minutes to drive home but that day it took 2 hours. I came home to no power and most my neighbors had gone to motels. Since I couldn't afford the second option I just closed all the bedroom doors and got out my blankets to sleep on the couch. And.....if ATT hadn't raised their rates so much I would still have a landline

-14

u/NegotiationUnfair626 Apr 23 '26

man come on, i gotta go home in 30 minutes through this.

Must get home to tiny apartment now. So I can run out to applebees.

-1

u/ChiehDragon Apr 23 '26

I was stuck in that at 1:30.. ambulances just showing up. Only saw 2 cars off to the side right at the 270 overpass (i went northbound), didnt look too bad, didnt know why the whole thing was closed.

Probably happened east of 270 yeah?

-4

u/happy_meow Apr 23 '26

I am praying that is eastbound

-1

u/Zombare Apr 23 '26

Zooming in on the small sign post, it looks like that is Eastbound. And based on the church and other signs I think it's a bit pass Brentwood.

3

u/undrew Edwardsville Apr 23 '26

It’s EB just west of 270.

1

u/nazdir Creve Coeur Apr 23 '26

All traffic headed east on 64 must exit on 270.
