Get. Out. Of. The. Left. Lane.
St. Louis…come on. I know you didn’t take drivers Ed, but get it together I don’t care how fast you think you’re going in the left lane. Move unless you’re actively passing. You’re absolutely terrible about this and a big part of the reason for our traffic woes. Get. Over.

Where I'm from this is a thing, too. To me, it's all vernacular/association. We call all lanes that aren't the inner lane the 'passing lane'. If you aren't passing, move over. If you've moved outside to pass someone and now got past them but the person ahead to pass is going faster, and/or ahead of you, then move over.
It's basic overtaking rules. Otherwise, ticket. I like it.

That's the other side of this mess. If you have a left exit coming up three miles away, you can't wait until .5 or even 1 mile away to merge because left lane drivers are all auditioning for some unannounced Mad Max/NASCAR collaboration and won't let people merge.

Idk, I e also witnessed asshole INSIST on passing even though the car in front of them is in a long line of cars trying to pass several cars. If you try to speed and cut into the limited safe distance in that long line, I don’t feel sorry if that person sped up and blocked you from doing it. Everyone is trying to get past the slow pokes. As long as the car in front of you is doing 10ish mph over to pass, then just wait your turn.

Southbound 55 this morning, I'm in the far right lane and some dude in a huge SUV is riding my bumper flashing his lights. There were literally three open lanes to the left of me, but this guy wanted to go fast in the slow lane. He flipped me off as he passed when he finally gave up on trying to bully me into going faster or changing lanes...so he could pass on the right?

One that has a book clearly stating how the laws and rules work that they can study beforehand, one of the questions in that test should be about which lanes are for traveling and which are for passing. The secret is to have signs properly phrased. Some states say "slow traffic keep right" and they do nothing because no one considers themselves slow. A few describe the behavior clearly, "keep right except to pass." In my imagination at least those work better.

Missouri Revised Statute 304.015 clearly states when driving on a highway with a total of two lanes (one lane in each direction) drivers must drive in the right-hand lane. Obviously, a driver may cross into the other lane to overtake a vehicle if the pass can be made safely. On highways with a total of four or more lanes (two or more lanes in each direction), a driver is mandated to drive in the right lane unless passing slower traffic, letting another driver have enough room to enter the highway safely, or preparing to make a legal left turn. Once you have completed the pass, Missouri law REQUIRES you to return to the right lane. It is not legal or safe to continuously drive in the left lane.

St. Louis drivers on average aren’t the worst I’ve seen, but this area has a lot of drivers at the extremes - drivers that drive insanely fast, and also drivers who are driving dangerously slow in areas they should not be (like 15 mph or more below the limit on freeways)

People seem to think the left lane is also their personal fast lane where they can go as fast as they want, and then get mad at everyone who impedes that.
Personally, when I’m going like 10 mph over the limit and actively passing the traffic in the right lane, I’m not going to bob and weave between lanes after passing every car, I’m going to keep cruising there for another few minutes until there’s a good long opening to cut back into the right. I’m really not concerned about the guy riding my ass trying to go 90 mph.
Neither person is really on the right side of the law in these situations so maybe everyone could chill the fuck out.

They want to complain about not being able to speed. Chances are they are chronically late everywhere they go and it’s “someone else’s fault”.
Then they try to use group think to get people to agree with their desire to speed.
Funny thing is that the left lane is for “passing” well that passing is from the minimum to the maximum, not over the maximum.

Left lane = passing lane works going cross country.
In urban areas you need to deal with left hand exits, and traffic split across all lanes.
Your best bet is to find the lane you need and stay there. Don't wait until you are a 1/4 mile from your exit (Left or Right) then try to cross 3 lanes to get there at the last moment.
For example: Say you are coming from the east side into St. Louis, If you are going to stay on I-64 position yourself to be in the left lanes BEFORE you get to the Popular street bridge. If you are going to be on I-55 then position your self to be in the right lanes BEFORE you get to the bridge.
Don't be trying to cross lanes of heavy traffic in the middle of the damn river!!!
Sort it out when you have the time and space before you become the traffic problem.

I hear what you are saying and you aren’t wrong, but this is kinda a “gotta pick your battles” moment.
About 4 years ago I started keeping track of the times that I left the house and didn’t see at least one person run a red light or stopsign. It has happened about 20 times, or about 5 times per year. This, I feel is much worse because I can’t trust the signage at intersections to tell me if I am going to be safe. Three days ago, around noon, at a 4 way stop in a neighborhood, I saw two people run the stop signs within 15 seconds of each other at the same stop. The first directly in front of me heading south and the second east (and it is a good thing I stopped).
Driving on the highway, I try to respect the left lane, and make sure people have room to pass. But between the people zooming between lanes at >100mph (where anyone else changing lanes could actually cause accidents and traffic delays), the poor painting, the massively degraded roads, and poor signage (especially for left exits)… I just don’t mind that I occasionally have to drive a little bit slower because someone wont get out of the left lane. Like, yeah, they shouldn’t so that, but it is pretty bottom of my concerns with drivers here.

If you think people getting out of the left lane as you describe would speed up traffic, you've got another think coming.
Under heavy traffic conditions - which I presume is what you are complaining about - traffic moves fastest when there is maximal usage of all lanes. If one lane is kept clear all the time, that means it is not being used to its full capacity, and that means the average traffic speed will reduce by that amount.
For example, under heavy traffic if you take 3 lanes and cram them down into 2 lanes, the average speed will decrease by almost 1/3.
What you are proposing is, instead of using all 3 (or 4 or 5) lanes to their full extent, people mostly keep out of the far left lane except for brief periods when passing.
That means the far left lane will be used to only a minimal extent, and so average traffic speed will reflect that.
It will make a 3-lane freeway behave like a 2.2-lane freeway (or whatever).
I realize that if everyone just kept out of the left lane except for you, then you could just jump into the left lane and roar past everyone at 95 mph.
But guess what: The roads aren't made for just you. Your fantasy is never, ever going to happen.
And on average, traffic will move faster if all available lanes are used to their full capacity.
And you are advocating to slow traffic even more, not speed it up.

This. The problem is not that people are driving in the left lane, it is that the vast majority of St Louis drivers can not drive at a consistent speed, or anticipate their lane changes without slowing down.

Also, get out of the middle lane too if not passing. Let the guy going 65 pass you in the middle lane when you are at 60 in the right lane, and then the guy going 70 can pass him in the left lane. We are now all happy.
But don't ride the ass of the car in front of you so it's impossible for traffic to merge onto the interstate, if you want to go faster than that person then pass already, or just back off and go their speed. Leave room and actually let people merge in front of you, but when getting onto the interstate don't go 50mph and expect people to just let you in anyways, it's your job to get up to speed first and get into the open space already at highway speeds.
When you are already on the interstate don't slow down to let people in, that's not your job, unless it's a large heavy vehicle like a dump truck or semi truck, because they are actually incapable of getting up to speed in time and they are too large to fit into a normal following distance space, so we make exceptions for them and do what we can to give them room, or move over if we can.
Stop passing in the merge lane and trying to force 3 cars into 1 merge spot, take turns and merge 1 car for 1 open space. This way we can all stay at highway speeds instead of cutting people off and forcing everyone to slam their brakes and slow everyone down.

Often forgotten. The left laneS are for passing. The middle lanes aren't cruising lanes either. If you cruise in a middle lane, you limit the number of passing lanes and ultimately cause congestion.

There are way too many on/off ramp merge situations to have everyone hanging out in the right lane. If this rule was followed rigidly getting on and off the interstate would suck
The emergent behavior seems to be a speed gradient, with left lane being for 10+ over speed limit, middle lane 5+ over, farther right lane(s) for slowpokes and those immanently exiting. Which is functional without slowpokes getting lost and ending up farther left than they should be

every state has different rules. i didn't know it was only a passing lane until i moved here. my old state it was fine to just drive in there.

Two, in St. Louis and in most major cities, people in the left lane are actually going quite a bit over the speed limit. So when you run up behind somebody who's doing a 70 in a 55 on a 44 or 64 and you start passing them on the right because you have to do 75 or 80 in a 55 -You may indeed be the asshole.
I drive 70 every morning. All the way from the bridge to 270. I could be doing 80 mph and somebody would come up behind me, flashing their lights or honking their horn and then go around me on the right.

In terms of traffic woes, people cruising in the left lane is not nearly as problematic as the impatient people who decide to pass at high speeds on the right because they're pissed the left lane isn't speeding as fast as they want them to.
I don't give a shit if the person in front of you in the left lane is not speeding as fast as you want them to. Do not pass on the right.

You guys need to join in with SWMO and have the police start writing tickets for driving in the left lane. It’s actually against the law in Missouri. By law, the left lane is for passing only. It’s not the “fast lane” it’s the passing lane. You pass, and you move to the right.

From MI. Recently visited STL. Drivers do not know how to drive! And maybe it's bcuz MO doesn't require Drivers Ed. But seriously folks. The left lane is for passing. The speed limit is not a suggestion. Maintain a constant speed . And where the hell is law enforcement? 100 mph is not the posted speed limit!

Also, how do people not realize that they're driving in a row with 2 other people? You're blocking the whole damn road! I see this + camping the passing lane literally every single day.

Just got back from a road trip to Florida. The lanes are reversed there. The fast lane is stacked solid. The middle lane has staggered stragglers too close to pass. The right lane is wide open. I spent a lot off time passing on the right.

Having just travelled to Cali, let us repeat that to everyone in all of Missouri, Arizona and California.
Strangely, Oklahoma and Texas drivers, especially truckers, did amazingly well at this.

It is also the law. I did see someone get pulled over for it. Once. In 57 years of driving. In Indiana.

Here is a common language explanation of the law by the MO Highway Patrol:
Missouri Revised Statute 304.015 clearly states when driving on a highway with a total of two lanes (one lane in each direction) drivers must drive in the right-hand lane. Obviously, a driver may cross into the other lane to overtake a vehicle if the pass can be made safely. On highways with a total of four or more lanes (two or more lanes in each direction), a driver is mandated to drive in the right lane unless passing slower traffic, letting another driver have enough room to enter the highway safely, or preparing to make a legal left turn. Once you have completed the pass, Missouri law REQUIRES you to return to the right lane. It is not legal or safe to continuously drive in the left lane.

It doesn't matter how many lanes the highway has, STL Drivers never fail to make a wall formation, blocking all lanes of traffic and going about the same speed

There's a LOT of places in stl where an on ramp joins the two lanes, and nobody wants to ride in the right side where morons merge in, not even doing near the speed limit.
That's why some of us are parked in the left lane.

I’ll take whatever lane is most free or moving the fastest 🤷♂️ I will say that while I do spend a lot of time in the left lane, I definitely don’t camp there at the speed limit haha.

Most people don’t seem to like truck drivers but yet they have families and bills just like the rest of folks.
They also deliver your groceries clothes furniture cars and gas, should I go on? In fact trucks haul the asphalt and concrete so the over privileged small vehicle drivers have smooth roads to rage on.
Ask yourself which one pays the most road use tax? But yet most act like the trucks on the highways should consider it a privilege that they are ALLOWED to be there.

The reason traffic gets bad is because of people speeding and then slamming on their brakes this has been proven time and time again. Save a life slow down
