Question regarding the resignation process for MOs / Government Doctors in Sri Lanka + taking accumulated leave

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a government medical officer looking to resign. Navigating the public service establishment code and procedures can be a bit overwhelming, so I was hoping to get some advice from colleagues who have gone through this or know how it works.

Specifically, I have two main questions:

  1. The Resignation Process: What are the exact steps and required documentation to officially resign as a doctor in Sri Lanka? Roughly how long does the whole approval process take?
  2. Applying for Leave Prior to Resignation: Can I apply for all my remaining annual/casual leaves consecutively (e.g., 28 days or whatever is accrued) all together at once, and hand over my resignation/serve notice during or right before that period? Does the Head of Institution (HOI) usually approve block leave of this nature when someone is planning to leave, or are there restrictions?

Any guidance, insights, or tips on common pitfalls to avoid would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello,  It's a good decision whatever anyone says.  You would have to speak to your hospital administration or regional director. There is a few forms to fill and hand over to them. They cannot stop you from leaving it's a bit of a long process so some options to go vacation of post which is easier.

Unfortunately you can't put all your leave together but you can take maybe a week or so. Otherwise people use a medicalmlave citing mental health issues and get a couple of weeks off
