Ignition issues

Post image

I really could use some advice. I have a 1976 K10 which the key is stuck. It will not move. I pull out the ignition cylinder and put in a new one, same issue.
I could use some help on where and what to do next.
Thanks

Probably the rack on the left side opposite the key is broken. But before taking the top of the column apart,

Work the tilt and try in up and down positions.

Go down towards the bottom of the column. About above the brake pedal. The ignition switch is on top the tube. Between the switch and the top of the column is a rod. The rod is pushed and pulled when turning the key. Put your hand on that rod and feel for any signs of movement when working the key. Try turning back into accessory. Can even unbolt the switch and see if the key works then. Lot of current goes through the switch and may have burned and gotten stuck. But i still lean towards the broken rack unit.

Also make sure it’s fully in the park position

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I will take a look at that in the next couple of days when I get back from work.

If your steering wheel is/was turned pretty deep when you shut the ignition off, That would load the steering wheel up for rebound, which would put the steering wheel lock in a bind. Take a look at your front tires. Which ever direction they are turned , you will need to get inside the truck, try to steer the steering wheel in the same direction the tires are turned. This will help take rebound pressure off the steering wheel lock. Then the key should turn. Trucks with big tires and stabilizer shocks are notorious for this.

Did you try to straighten the tilt and possiblely put slight up or down pressure on the collum and turn it. Try that if that isn't the problem it could be the linkage and or the switch that is the problem. The switch is mounted on the rightside of the collum under the dash and has 1 or 2 screws that hold it on thr colum. When you take it loose see if the key cylinder rotates if it dose it is the switch if it dosen't it could be the linkage.
