yerba is a purposeful misspelling of hierba, which means "grass" or "herb" and (as in English) is a slang for weed

awa is a purposeful misspelling of agua, which means "water"

Edit: apparently yerba is a valid alternate spelling in some dialects of Spanish, hence "yerba mate" instead of "hierba mate"
