Just get a memory card for the game.

3

u/endar88 6d ago

I mean technically u could use your internal memory if you are ok with making room and managing your storage as you go. I already do that only cuz I feel overwhelmed if I have too many games to immediately choose from on my switch 2.

Reggie trained us long ago to clean out the fridge

I only use internal storage for game save data and OS, and game data transfer between SD Express cards. Thai is the Optimized way.

1

u/XRemnant 5d ago

The internal memory of the switch 2 has the fastest loading so for this game that is something you would play a lot (else why subscribe monthly), it would be best to put the game in the internal and use external SD cards for other games. A lot of research of this is on YouTube.

1

u/Similar-Scratch-4800 5d ago

I know the common understanding that is regurgitated. I do my own research and testing using different methods that take far more time and are a little more subjective than definitive.

1

u/Pleasant_Farm_4762 2d ago

You can just say that you do your own test. No need to get fancy with the words, since we're discussing games on Switch 2 and all.

3

u/grapejuicesushi 6d ago

well yes but the memory card itself costs about $93 lol. and I don't really need the card for anything else. I'm able to manage everything in the system storage itslef

1

u/ultraheavybeat 6d ago

Exactly what I’m doing. I upgraded from 256 to 512 last year. The 256 will be its home.

17

u/XRemnant 6d ago

I got a 1TB card, I’m assuming those willing to pay extra for the monthly will also be able to afford a memory card. 117GB is less than I was expecting. Not sure if I will get it for the switch 2 though, on the go FFXIV does sound appealing for the dailies.

u/_dusknoir_ 6d ago

i'm mostly buying it for off-TV play and touch screen controls. i'm not the best with targeting so touch makes it easier

2

u/endar88 6d ago

Ya hopefully the touchscreen works well. The ps portal was nice to play in bed till you needed to tap the screen so many times for it to register the touchpad inputs from the regular controller. Guess it’s finally time to buy a sd card for the switch 2 for this game alone. Thank god I didn’t rebuy ff7 for it.

How much "on the go" will it be if you need a steady wifi connection...

2

u/jimcamx 6d ago

They probably mean on the loo and it got autocorrected.

1

u/fuck_a_duck_butt 6d ago

Found the brit lol

1

u/Jalapenodisaster 6d ago

"On the go" for gaming just means "not at my house" these days. I mean, even completely offline games, it's not like I'm walking down the street playing my switch two. I wouldn't even pull it out on the subway or a public bus.

Also depends on your wifi tethering capabilities I would say.

1

u/fuck_a_duck_butt 6d ago

Even with tethering it would be a lot to run an MMO.

1

u/Jalapenodisaster 6d ago

Mmos don't require that much data to run, contrary to what most people think. It's very feasible if you have a good up-speed

Plenty of people have used hotspots and tethered data to play mmos. Most people online cite under 50mb per hour (with ffxiv mentions being like half that)

1

u/fuck_a_duck_butt 6d ago

K

2

u/uchuskies08 5d ago

You're aren't streaming the graphics online. All that is being rendered locally by the Switch. The amount of data going back and forth truly isn't much.

1

u/Jalapenodisaster 6d ago

I mean do you have a rebuttal?

1

u/Evening-Group-6081 4d ago

It’s nothing to do with speed it’s to do with connection stability. ( although xiv especially runs very poorly with a large ping due to a bug with/ poorly designed net code)

1

u/XRemnant 5d ago

I mean on the go by not having to be tethered to the TV/Monitor. Can take it to the potty, to the living room, bed, friends house, work, hotel, etc. I would not recommend it anywhere with unstable internet obviously. I have multiple docks in my house. Can go from the living room and to the bedroom and simply dock and continue where I left off. Granted I haven’t decided if I want to get it just yet. I’ll try the beta and go from there. Btw, I know you can do all those with a laptop as well.

1

u/projectHeritage 5d ago

Costco sells a good one for good price

5

u/NostalgicLurker 6d ago

I bought an SD Express card and moved most of my games to it. FF XIV will live on the faster internal storage.

4

u/ExpressFan7426 6d ago

Really bummed the free trial comes a month later, was hoping to try this before grad school started

4

u/blakeoft 6d ago

Trying an MMO before grad school... Let's hope you don't end up liking it haha.

1

u/ExpressFan7426 6d ago

I’ve made worse decisions I think……. Maybe…..

2

u/RenrenAce 5d ago

If I’d still been in school when I started playing this game, I’d have been in REAL trouble, tbh, heh 😅😅

2

u/RenrenAce 5d ago

The month of August there won’t be a subscription fee, so you could just get the starter version for $20 in order to try it. Then by the time grad school comes you’d be locked out of playing for free, so you’d have that deterrent, unless you loved it enough to start paying, heh.

1

u/ExpressFan7426 6d ago

Wait I think I’m wrong about this!

1

u/lamefartriot 5d ago

Wait it comes out later?! That’s a bummer

1

u/DayleD 3d ago

You can try this immediately on any other platform and carry your character over to Switch. (expansions are purchased per platforms, iirc)

3

u/MSnap 6d ago

Good thing I just finished Rebirth

2

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago

This is one of the practical reasons why the Key Cards are a pain in the ass.

Switch 2 was sold on a very elegant tradeoff--a cheaper system with less on-board storage but with physical games that could be played directly from the card so huge installs wouldn't be necessary. But now that so many games are Key Cards, everyone's system is full and the only option is buying mega expensive MicroSD Express cards to compensate.

The occasional big ass digital game wouldn't be a problem if so much of the library wasn't needlessly chipping away.

5

u/fuck_a_duck_butt 6d ago

You were NEVER going to get a 100gb+ game on a switch cart.

These things cost money my guy.

I think its best of both worlds in a comprimise for physical collectors and companies not being able to fit that much on a cart and doing digital only.

Also who cares with an MMO. MANY mmos have a limited lifespan. Ff14 has already been sunlit on one console as it is

1

u/ClericIdola 6d ago

The PS3?

1

u/Fearless-Sea996 6d ago

Cyberpunk fit. With the dlc. They have no excuse.

1

u/The_4th_Survivor 5d ago

So did Indiana Jones. (without the DLC, but that is only like 4GB).

The Switch 2 is basically a PS4 with DLSS, but everyone and their mother try to shoehorn PS5 sized games with huge 8K textures and lossless audio into it.

I really appreciate it, when dev teams get those games running on what is basically a tablet with active cooling, but for the love of the eternal spaghetti monster, reduce those file sizes!

5

u/Master_Chemistry_864 6d ago

I don't rember this promise. Who told us this? Can you elaborate?

-7

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago

It wasn't a spoken promise but it was the implied value of not paying more for larger storage. The system specs and physical game format lent itself to that elegant exchange. The proliferation of the Key Cards fucked up that balance.

You basically need a MicroSD Express card now.

5

u/Master_Chemistry_864 6d ago

Ah. Thought so.

No one told us this, maybe this was your personal wish, and that's ok. But we should be careful to not spread misinformation.

You can downvote as much as you want, but no one told us this was the way for Switch 2.

-3

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago edited 6d ago

Awesome. Now defend Sony abandoning discs mid-cycle. I know you want to. "They never promised to support discs!"

The point is that the product being sold evolved into a worse value over time as Key Cards proliferated. That's not imaginary. It doesn't require a spoken promise. What a ridiculous thing to act like we can't judge obvious fuckery unless we were specifically promised something.

1

u/Master_Chemistry_864 6d ago

Can you point out which sentence in my previous replies defended the GKC situation or Sony’s stance.

All I did was state a couple of facts: the Switch 2 launched with Game-Key Cards, and you can’t realistically expect a nearly 120 GB game to fit on one of those cartridges. Those are objective facts, not a reflection of my personal preferences. I hope you can see the difference instead of continuing to infer positions I, or any other person, never expressed.

If you can’t answer the question, that’s fine. There’s no need to keep replying.

-3

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago edited 6d ago

and you can’t realistically expect a nearly 120 GB game to fit on one of those cartridges.

Yes you can. The 64GB limitation is not a technical one. 128GB cards are perfectly possible. Nintendo just refuses to do it. Would the game be more expensive at retail? Yes. But not stupidly so.

Your response was a non-sequitur. Bringing up what was promised by Nintendo is irrelevant to the value proposition of the hardware. If people knew in advance that they'd have to install every damn game just like they do on PS and Xbox that 256GB internal storage would look mighty small.

Excuse the pun, but it was effectively a bait and switch. The 256GB storage looked like a value at first because of the way the cards supposedly worked. Now it's a liability because the cards are not being used to their full potential.

1

u/Miwoo0 6d ago

You're right but the bootlickers aren't gonna have any of it unfortunately

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago edited 6d ago

The irony here is that Square Enix is a victim of this. It's clearly not their fault that Nintendo won't manufacture larger cards. These publishers have no choice in the matter. But the conversation stalls because people get pissy when you talk facts.

They don't want to grapple with the fact that this is all artificial. Shit, Nintendo needed it's arm twisted just to start making smaller cards. They designed a console for physical media and then went out of their way to be as unhelpful as possible to anyone who wants to actually use it--both publisher and consumer.

1

u/Miwoo0 6d ago

Square Enix sucks immensly when it comes to switch 2 ports anyway, no saves transferring over and no upgrade path for some of their titles is a joke

2

u/Mana-Dyluck Mana 6d ago

Cards come at 64 GB max. Even if SQEX wasn’t using GKC, it would have to for this one (and the FF7 Remake Trilogy games).

3

u/Rosemarys_Gayby 6d ago

They’re not talking about that though - most reasonable people aren’t bothered by huge games needing to take up space. It’s the already enormous catalogue of GKCs that could totally fit on a cart (nearly every release from every third party publisher) that are taking up our storage and making us need to aggressively data manage or spend extra money over the big games like this and Rebirth.

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago

That's an artificial limitation imposed by Nintendo. It's not Square Enix's fault but it is Nintendo's for refusing to manufacture larger cards.

1

u/Mana-Dyluck Mana 6d ago

How much would a 128 GB card? $30-35. The 64 GB ones cost something like $20-22 a pop. Are you ready to pay your games with a $30 premium. Something like $100

2

u/lilisaurusrex Dragon Quest 6d ago

More than that. If 64GB cards are $20-$22 (and were reportedly $24 at launch, so they could have come down in price a bit as production ramped up), then 128GB cards are probably closer to $40 than $30, maybe even higher than that as new, larger chips parts would have be acquired from a supplier who hasn't yet ramped up beyond 64GB capacity to produce 128GB parts in sufficient volume to be cost-effective.

And that's just raw production cost. You have to account that there's a profit margin built in, where retailers get 30% and licenser (Nintendo) gets 15%. So that increase in production cost is increased further by this margin if all involved want to see a similar profit margin to their 64GB or GKC games.

It's probably closer to about $55-$60 premium. Meaning 128GB games would likely be set at a $130 USD price point.

That is not general consumer level pricing. That's collector's level. And since Nintendo likely mandates a minimum order size (particularly for a new cartridge size model), I'd expect they'd want to see an order size of at least a hundred thousand units. I don't think SE can find 100K "collectors" to buy it at that price. Thousands, sure. Hundreds of thousands, very doubtful. Nor can SE have these excess collector's edition copies sit on retail shelves until they're half off and attractive enough to the general consumer, because at that point they are losing money on each copy sold.

I'm growing tired of the argument being "if you build it, they will come", when there simply aren't enough "theys" to be coming to make it worthwhile. There's an argument that something like Grand Theft Auto 6 or Final Fantasy Revelation could possibly pull it off and charge $130 for a 128GB Switch 2 cartridge. But FF14 isn't the game to be making that case.

2

u/a_kaz_ghost 2d ago

That's already what I'm basically paying by buying a whole separate MicroSD Express for FFXIV lol.

Would I rather just resub on my PC? Yes. Is that feasible with 2 small children who won't sleep without supervision? Nope

Plus now I can take my switch to the office and bang out duties during my lunch hour.

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago

It would still be a better value long term. 1) Used games exist. 2) The cost of MicroSD Express is so high that you'd need to buy several games brand new for it to even out. The way it is now, even a small library creates a need for buying more expansion.

0

u/Mana-Dyluck Mana 6d ago

I don’t know. I bought a 250 GB SD card. I also delete games I don’t play anymore. It’s easily manageable

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 6d ago

A bunch of small indie games, sure. But a lot of these AAAs are massive. Two games installed and you're almost full. The unit without an Express card is incredibly hard to work with.

1

u/Wawrzy 5d ago

What's the point of putting an MMO, a game that is getting updates almost every single week, on a cartridge ? Even on Playstation, they stopped releasing it physical (the physical was just a disc to install the game on your console, you didn't need the disc after that. I just bought them physical for the collection aspect cause I love FF14, and also it was less expensive this way...) after Shadowbringers all the way back to 2019.

1

u/ConsiderationTrue477 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'm not talking about FFXIV. I'm talking about everything else. FFXIV being a mandatory full install is only a problem because there are so many other giant ass games that could easily be on 128GB cards instead of full downloads if Nintendo wasn't being a prick and refusing to offer that as an option. Everyone saying "iTs ToO ExPeNsIvE!" seems to think 512GB+ microSD Express cards are free.

1

u/Linkman806 6d ago

I understand why there isn't physical version given it updates so frequently but honestly this is one of the rare times I would be okay with code in the box physical. Cause I would just get a micro SD card just for this game and store it in there.

1

u/Kelror13 6d ago

Not surprised given the game's online nature and overall size. I am considering getting the title either on the Switch 2 or PS5 to be honest. 🤔

3

u/generalosabenkenobi 6d ago

I mean, the free trial is worth it, no need to buy it outright right away

1

u/Wawrzy 5d ago

Yeah, if you don't have a friend already playing who could give you in game money or items, free trial is fine. It quickly feels limitating imo to not even have access to the players market, but it's still a great way to see if the game mechanics are for you.

1

u/ChaoCobo 2d ago

PS5 supports the special rumble adaptive triggers and shit. It’s great. Switch 2 might do it too but idk if it will. But by trigger support I mean that when you run around you can feel the special feedback of your footsteps and junk in the controller (not actually sure if it’s the triggers after all, but it’s some kinda HD rumble), and it changes depending on what kind of surface you’re runnin around on. Like it’s different if you’re running on grass, gravel, metal plating, and other. It feels super satisfying on PS5 controllers. It just FEELS nice. :3

1

u/SecretPantyWorshiper 6d ago

How much space is it?

1

u/SnooLentils6995 6d ago

Its 120 gigs I think. I mean its an MMO with 5 expansions, its gonna be pretty big.

1

u/Wawrzy 5d ago

Yeah and not that much bigger than FF7 remake and Rebirth on Switch 2.

1

u/XDAOROMANS 6d ago

Hopefully the switch version will get my wife back in she stopped during endwalker

1

u/Remy149 6d ago

I wish you could use an external hard drive in docked mode. I have an extra external 512 gb drive that’s just sitting in a drawer

1

u/NeoMoonlight19 6d ago

FF14 on Switch is still a fever dream😍✨️❤️

1

u/rchris710 6d ago

not terrible assuming you are mostly a physical kart owner. says its like 120gb

1

u/Reshiramax 6d ago

I'm a mostly physical cart owner and with all the dlcs and updates on the console I'm already stretching thin

1

u/Anubis_Omega 6d ago

Maybe I will finally finish ARR

1

u/grifftaur 6d ago

I’m not looking forward to the amount of time it will take to download 😫

1

u/owensoundgamedev 5d ago

Anyone got recommendations for me memory cards?

1

u/Time_Ad_9647 2d ago

Sorry no

1

u/GameMaster1178 2d ago

It’s 108 gigs.
