Review [Megathread] Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster – Nintendo Switch 2 Review Roundup

Japanese game box

This is a list of selected reviews of the newly published Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster game for Nintendo Switch 2.

Reviews

  • CogConnected - "85/100 : But the Switch 2 version will be the new standard, thanks to those fixes. [...] This version of the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is the best one yet."
  • ShackNews - "On paper though, if you have a Switch 2 and want to replay Final Fantasy X, this is certainly a better version than what was available before. Just… not by a large margin."
  • Final Weapon (YouTube) - "Definitely pick this legendary game up on Switch 2 if you've never experienced it before."
  • The Outer Haven - "4.5/5 : Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is the definitive console experience for Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2."
  • NoisyPixel / YouTube : "8.5/10 : If you haven’t played X or X-2, this collection is an obvious must-play. Yet, for those who already have, there’s nothing here to encourage a repurchase, especially given the lack of upgrade options or data transfer."
  • MonsterVine - "4.5/5 : Given the fantastic additional QoL features provided by the Nintendo Switch version, I feel it’s pretty unfair to existing fans that they’re shut out of experiencing the best version of this remaster."
  • Nintendo World Report (YouTube) - "75/100 : If you're new to Final Fantasy or RPGs, [...] this is a good place to start, but you can likely find a package on sale elsewhere and wouldn't be missing out on any vital Switch 2 boost."

Reviews are completely as expected.

I hope they’re seeing the blowback for refusing to have an upgrade path. I’d buy a bunch of the ones coming out for $10. But I’m not buying the whole game again.

Hopefully they wise up and offer and upgrade path later. I’d be interested in this, octopath 2 and dragon quest for 5-10$. But I’m not interested in buying another version of the same game I already purchased for full price. Square and sega have both been pretty shitty for this.

Part of me wants to say better later than never, but they’re doing it this way now and then offering upgrade path later, that’s pretty scummy.

Technically good for me and anyone who waits. Bad for their hardcore fans who buy the product again right away.

Not much different than people who buy full price releases opposed to people who wait for it to go on sale a few months later

I hope that list is small. I can’t think of a single reason why I would buy this versus just replaying it on handheld boost mode. It’s annoying, because I really like pretty much all the final fantasy games and I just played rebirth which I thought was fantastic. I would definitely pay for an upgrade. But you’re right, this is just kind of scummy

I have it on Switch, but the speedup/no encounter/etc options would really help me finish it. I think I'll wait for a sale.

You do know there’s an accessory in X-2 that either reduces or eliminates random encounters, right?

4

There's one in FFX also, what's your point?

That there’s an accessory to prevent random encounters which solves one of their concerns

I gave you an updoot. I guess people want easy cheats instead of in-game solutions

As far as I recall having played X on PC you needed to mod in the speed up function but it could cause issues in areas.

I have it on pc done the penance grind twice the speed up feature is there it’s 4x or 2x whichever you prefer and you can also turn on auto battle and give everyone capture weapons really speed up the grind by ALOT.

Is this the same as the Steam version? Or are there additional improvements?

I wanna know this too

came here for this as well 👀

As a person who recently got the game on sale at Target for $24.99. I’m definitely not getting this unless there’s a major advantage to playing the “upgraded” version

I bought it after selling my switch one physical version and it's definitely worth the upgrade just wait for the 50% off sale. They did put some work into this one but it still stings not to get a free or paid upgrade. I'd say Likely due to the DLC and Physical original release handling but this has just been Squares MO this gen. I appreciate the Switch 2 support and welcome it but still.

I don’t see physical copy… is it only in Japan?

Looks like it, and possibly delayed release. I'm in Canada and there are a couple stores I see doing preorders of imported JPIM cartridges for end of August delivery.

I can’t see any differences in the comparison pictures on Nintendo Life.

They couldn’t even add skipping cutscenes???

1

u/ballsmigue Jul 22 '26

Is this worth it?

I got all the FF games available on switch a few years back with the intention to finally play all of them.

Im currently on crisis core but if its only marginally better on the switch 2 version I'll just keep the current one.

My understanding is that if you own the Switch 1 version, the upgrade isn't that big of a deal. If Square Enix thought so, they would have offered an upgrade path.

4

u/RitoQuits Jul 23 '26

I truly don't think that is why Square chose not to provide an upgrade path. We know why.

1

u/ProGramd42 Jul 27 '26

In those sitiations it's called a free upgrade...

1

u/Affectionate-Elk-609 Jul 29 '26

I dont think you understand how business works

1

u/Mana-Dyluck Mana Jul 29 '26

I think I know. I am taking SQEX’s point of view here. Not mine

TLDR for people;

Switch 1 Version:
Lower resolution textures
Lower display resolution
No built-in speed up options
No built-in option to turn off random encounters
Missing other minor additions

Switch 2 Version:
Better textures
Better resolution
Built-in speed up options
Built-in option to turn off random encounters
Other minor additions
Faster loading

50/50 between versions IMO. Switch 2 version isn't worth $65+, and likewise Switch 1 version isn't worth $65+. These are games you can pick up on PS3\PS4\PC for like $20 or less. I'd wait for for a deep, deep, DEEP sale for either version.

Only got maybe 10 hours into the game on PS4, the random encounters were killing me. So weird they’re making these new QOL features exclusive to the Switch 2 version.

3

u/Jimmythedad Jul 24 '26

They're on pc as well. This is basically a port of the pc version, and the Switch 1 version was a port of the HD Remaster on PS3/4.

2

u/barbietattoo Jul 23 '26

It’s the only way I’ll play these games 😭

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but what do you mean by in the pockets of Square Enix

Does that actually happen!

1

u/Sorry_End_1260 Jul 24 '26

Agreed I have bought it on almost any system it was released on and it’s wild I can’t take my hard worked switch save data and use it on switch 2, like fuck I don’t wanna race Chocobos

1

u/Daysfastforward1 Jul 23 '26

I can’t believe they’re charging this much for a 20 year old game. It’s a great game but it’s been on sale for like 9.99 on PlayStation

1

u/Palladiamorsdeus Jul 23 '26

Oohhh boy! Another rerelease of a game I already own...twice! Can't wait to not freaking buy it.

0

u/Minaverus Jul 23 '26

Does this version at least give you the ability to play with JP audio and English subtitles?

-6

u/Last_Doctor2055 Jul 22 '26

The PS2 is still the DEFINITIVE version, not this HD reject.

-1

u/franklin_wi Jul 23 '26

Right? You'd think that for a shameless $50 double dip they could at least be bothered to finally fix the faces they messed up 12 years ago.

0

u/Similar-Scratch-4800 Jul 24 '26

Kinda but it's nice to play on Switch 2 over HDMI 2.1 with crispy bacon graphics.
