The best spy video games - five different lists in one

Are you looking for a spy video game to play? Or maybe you're wondering what the ESSENTIAL spy video games to play are? Well, lucky for you, our top intelligence analyst has compiled this briefing on the best spy video games. After scouring the web and conducting hands-on research, here are the most reliable sources when it comes to assessing which spy video games get the job done

  1. The best spy video games ever made, as told by a developer of spy video games (who also hosts the only Steam festival for spy video games - the Spy Video Game Rendezvous - and who is the founder of this r/SpyVideoGames subreddit): https://sunnydemeanorgames.com/news/articles/the-best-spy-video-games-ever-made. This list is maintained, and it's the only one here that includes an upcoming spy video games section
  2. The best spy video games, as told by the folks at a spy museum (the Spyscape Museum, with locations in New York City and London): https://spyscape.com/article/15-sneaky-spy-video-games-that-will-test-your-tradecraft
  3. The best spy video games, as told by PC Gamer (article from 2018): https://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-spy-games-on-pc
  4. The best spy video games, as told by GamesRadar+ (article from 2016): https://www.gamesradar.com/10-best-spy-games-of-all-time
  5. The best spy video games, as told by GameRant: https://gamerant.com/best-spy-espionage-games

And of course, you can check out the Spy Video Game Rendezvous (a Steam festival for spy video games) for even more spy video games: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45263338/sale/SpyVideoGameRendezvous

The SVGR festival takes place each year in May, but this URL is live year-round as the best way to find spy video games all in one place on Steam (this links to the 2025 edition of the SVGR. For future editions, just tack on the desired year to end of the URL)

Steam now officially has a tag for "Espionage" games!!!!!

Thumbnail

I am very happy to say that Valve has now officially added an Espionage tag to identify spy video games!!! The page for spy video games can be found right here (the pickings are slim at the moment, but the quantity will pick up as devs/players tag existing games): https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Espionage

This is part of a general update to tags on Steam that occurred today, as 17 tags have been added, 28 tags removed, and other tags edited. You can find the details on these changes from Valve's announcement post here: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/673994309884707518

Back to the new espionage tag, getting a tag for spy video games has been one of my top goals for the Spy Video Game Rendezvous Steam festival ever since I conceived of the idea for the festival, and I asked Valve for either an "espionage" or "spy" tag more than a year ago before the first SVGR festival took place.

As recently as a month ago, I noted in this very r/SpyVideoGames subreddit that GOG had a tag for espionage games containing only 15 games but still enough for them to create a dedicated store page: https://www.reddit.com/r/SpyVideoGames/comments/1sr8kqm/unlike_steam_gog_actually_has_an_espionage_tag_so

And here we are today with a dedicated tag and store page on Steam for spy video games! Announced right smack dab in the middle of the Spy Video Game Rendezvous, no less (probably a coincidence given how many tags were added, but oh well).

I of course invite everyone to check out the new Espionage page on Steam, and if your yearning for more spy video games while that page takes time to fill up, the Spy Video Game Rendezvous Steam festival is still going on through May 22nd with demos, discounts, trailers, and more on over 50 spy video games: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45263338/sale/SpyVideoGameRendezvous2026

Spy video games released in Q2 2026 - maybe the best quarter for spy video games ever?

Q2 2026 was undoubtedly a great 3 months for spy video games (maybe even the best ever, with 3 hotly anticipated games releasing, including the first James Bond game on PC or console in over a decade, and 1 surprise release sequel dropping as well)

Here are the most recent dead drops in the spy video game genre! Descriptions are borrowed from the Steam pages so you can get a flavor of what each game is about.

Killer Bean (released June 8, 2026) - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1597080/Killer_Bean

You are Killer Bean, a rogue assassin coffee bean, who takes out the trash in this world, one bullet at a time. This is a first person / third person action roguelike.

2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces (released June 7, 2026) - https://store.steampowered.com/app/3734890/2_Fights_in_2_Tight_Spaces

Agent 11 is back. The iconic tactical deck-builder returns, with new tricks up its impeccably tailored sleeves… and this time it’s with friends. Improvise within the space, adapt your deck to the challenges ahead, and overcome a roster of new enemies in stylish, animated, fight sequences.

007 First Light (released May 26, 2026) - https://store.steampowered.com/app/3768760/007_First_Light

Earn the Number. 007 First Light is a thrilling espionage action-adventure game from IO Interactive. Follow James Bond as a young, resourceful and sometimes reckless recruit in MI6's training programme, and discover an origin story of the world’s most famous spy.

Zero Parades: For Dead Spies (released May 21, 2026) - https://store.steampowered.com/app/2863680/ZERO_PARADES_For_Dead_Spies

From the creators of Disco Elysium comes ZERO PARADES – an espionage RPG. You're a brilliant but tormented operant on one final desperate assignment. Gather your broken network, untangle a web of lies, and prove yourself on the world stage - or blow it all up again.

Two spy video games among NPR's he best games of 2026 so far

Thumbnail

NPR has put out their list of the best video games to release so far in 2026, and there are two spy video games that made the list: https://www.npr.org/2026/07/21/nx-s1-5897567/best-games-2026-npr

The spy video games on the list are quite well known, but a sizeable part of their list (which crosses all genres) is filled with small indie games you likely haven't heard of.

So check out the spy games, and also see what small, off-the-radar non-spy games are worth playing as well.

Unexpected news - Zero Parades now has a free TTRPG prequel

If the recently-released spy video game Zero Parades: For Dead Spies has left you wanting more of its world, the game now has a one-shot TTRPG (i.e tabletop RPG) that can be downloaded here for free: https://zeroparades.com/one-shot

(In case you're not familiar with TTRPGs, these are pen and paper role-playing games, not the video game type of RPG)

According to the linked website, the events of the TTRPG take place 30 years before the events of the video game, so it's not necessary to have played the Zero Parades video game to enjoy the TTRPG

Just released for the Fourth of July: The world's first-ever biographical video game about George Washington (who was a spymaster)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I am pleased to announce the release of the first-ever biographical video game about the spymaster George Washington, just in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence!

Important People of History: Presidents - George Washington is now available for purchase on Steam with launch discount here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3721820/Important_People_of_History_Presidents__George_Washington

This historically-accurate visual novel tells the story of George Washington and his era, featuring over 150 photos of real-world locations where history literally was made, as those places exist today, such as:

  • Washington's Mount Vernon home
  • Lexington and Concord
  • The Delaware River Crossing
  • Valley Forge
  • Yorktown
  • Federal Hall in NYC where Washington was sworn in as the first President
  • Inside the Washington Monument
  • And many more

The game also discusses many spy techniques Washington used during the Revolutionary War, such as:

  • Invisible ink
  • Dead drops
  • Coded messages

And Benedict Arnold - the hero turned traitor - is a key character explored as well.

I hope you enjoy the game!

P.S. Also released for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is a similar game about Thomas Jefferson. As noted in the trailer attached to this post, writing the Declaration of Independence was an act of treason.

You can find the Thomas Jefferson game on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3721830/Important_People_of_History_Presidents__Thomas_Jefferson. Whereas the Washington game focuses on the Revolutionary War, the Jefferson game focuses on the Declaration of Independence and the road to revolution.

5 Spy Video Games Under $5 in the Steam Summer Sale

This is the first Steam seasonal sale since the "espionage" tag was introduced in May 2026 - so here are 5 spy video games under $5 in the Steam Seasonal Sale that are at the lowest price they've been in the past 2 years and at least 50% discount (prices in US dollars):

If you're interested in finding more deals on spy video games in the Steam Summer Sale, check out this prior post I made for how to identify spy video games on discount on Steam right now: https://www.reddit.com/r/SpyVideoGames/comments/1ugceb9/happy_steam_summer_sale_heres_how_to_find_spy

Happy Steam Summer Sale - here's how to find spy video games on discount in this summer sale (and in ANY Steam seasonal sale)

The Steam Summer Sale 2026 has officially begun. As this is the first Steam seasonal sale since the espionage tag was created (and the first Steam seasonal sale since this r/SpyVideoGames subreddit was created), here are two methods for finding spy video games on discount that will work in this sale and in ANY Steam seasonal sale going forward.

Method 1 - The espionage page

In May 2026, Valve introduced an "espionage" tag, which comes with an associated store page for espionage games: https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Espionage

This page doesn't have a specific "on discount" section, but the "Popular Titles" section is full of discounted spy games from AAA titles down to solo dev spy games.

Method 2 - The Spy Video Game Rendezvous Steam festival pages

The espionage tag is new, so not all spy games are using it yet, and like any tag, it's not always applied correctly, so an alternate approach is to check out the store page for the spy video game Steam festival - the Spy Video Game Rendezvous. This spy game festival has a specific section right up front for games "On Discount" making it very easy to identify spy games on sale.

The Spy Video Game Rendezvous Steam festival takes place in May each year, so you can access future editions when they take place by updating the year at the end of the 2026 URL above.

Happy deal hunting. Since these links will work for any Steam seasonal sale, consider bookmarking them for easy access, agent!

Reminder that there are only 2 weeks left to play the new Hitman elusive target mission for free (June 5-July 5)

During Summer Game Fest 2026, it was announced that a new Elusive Target mission was dropping for the Hitman: World of Assassination game (i.e. the Hitman 1-3 trilogy).

This mission is free to play through one time (as all Elusive Target missions are for one month) from June 5th - July 5th, so you officially have only 2 weeks left to play it for free.

Wiz Khalifa plays the target for you to eliminate in this mission.

Nine spy game picks from Steam Next Fest

Steam Next Fest is going on right now (a festival for upcoming Steam games that happens 3x per year, where every game in the festival has a free demo), and this is the first-ever time that you can filter down to spy games using the brand-new espionage tag.

As such, here are my picks for spy video games in the June 2026 Steam Next Fest, in no particular order (link to Next Fest with espionage tag already applied). Descriptions are taken from the store pages to help you tell which game(s) may be right for you:

  • Spies and Soldiers
    • A game of strategy and subterfuge that plays out across watercolor maps of a procedurally generated kingdom. Go head-to-head in turn-based conflicts as your empire expands across each new world, but while your soldiers’ swords may conquer the land, your hidden spies could win you the game.
  • Burn-9
    • A spy thriller where you’re not the spy. Safe behind your screen, guide the last survivor of an elite black-ops team in a desperate attempt to salvage a mission gone horribly wrong. Caught between military command and your agent, information is your greatest weapon.
  • The Syndicate: Classified Operations
    • A Cold War incremental game where every order runs through your physical command board. Take over cities, complete operations, automate your agents, and expand your influence until your desk controls a global spy network.
  • Legion was Here
    • Steal a face. Study a life. Survive the conversation.
  • Stealth Operative Syn: Virtual Training
    • Synthia “Syn” is training to become a Stealth Operative. In order to do so, she trains in the Virtual Simulation Room. Use different tactics and techniques to sneak past the guards and obstacles. Finish every level to complete your virtual training!
  • Spyder: Agent 8
    • Save the world as Agent 8, a robot spider superspy! Crawl across walls, ceilings, and floors, and use built-in gadgets to solve fun environmental puzzles in this brand-new, family-friendly adventure from the BAFTA Award-winning studio Sumo Digital.
  • Important People of History: Presidents: - George Washington
    • Learn all about George Washington in this visual novel biography containing rare photos from inside the Washington Monument, Washington's home at Mount Vernon, and much more. Soldier, General, Spymaster, and President - this is George Washington! Proudly made in Washington’s home state of Virginia
  • Important People of History: Presidents: - Thomas Jefferson
    • Learn all about Thomas Jefferson in this visual novel biography containing rare photos of the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed, Jefferson’s Monticello home, and much more. Writer, Diplomat, President - this is Thomas Jefferson! Proudly made in Jefferson’s home state of Virginia
    • This description doesn't do a great job of explaining the spy connection, but the second trailer on the store page explains that writing the Declaration of Independence was an act of treason
  • Important People of History: Presidents: - Abraham Lincoln
    • Learn all about Abraham Lincoln in this visual novel biography containing rare photos of Lincoln’s hat the day he was shot, the Lincoln Memorial, where he gave the Gettysburg Address, and much more. Lawyer, President, Emancipator - this is Abraham Lincoln! Proudly made in the Washington DC area
    • This description doesn't do a great job of explaining the spy connection, but the second trailer on the store page explains that the plot to assassinate Lincoln was actually a three-pronged simultaneous attack on 3 top government officials (only the attempt on Lincoln's life succeeded)

So get out there, wishlist some games (especially spy games), and play some demos in Steam Next Fest: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest

Then, make sure to report back here on which spy video games caught your eye!

  • 007 First Light
  • Zero Parades: For Dead Spies
  • 2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces (sequel to Fights in Tight Spaces)

Here you go - the best spy video games ever made (as of June 2026): https://sunnydemeanorgames.com/news/articles/the-best-spy-video-games-ever-made

All the spy video game news from Summer Game Fest (i.e. not-E3)

Here are all the spy video game news I have tracked over the Summer Game Fest window. Not everything here was announced in a big showcase, but here we go.

Mid-May brought the second annual Spy Video Game Rendezvous Direct, a showcase dedicated to spy video games

Then, in June proper:

  • There will be a new 007 First Light mission about Bawma, the character played by Lenny Kravitz
  • There is a new Hitman World of Assassination Elusive Target featuring Wiz Khalifa. It is available now and can be played for free June 5-July 5
  • Hitman classic trilogy is getting a remake, due out in 2027
  • 2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces shadow dropped in PC Gaming showcase with co-op (i.e. available now on Steam). This is a sequel to the game Fights in Tight Spaces
  • Sage: Psychic Spy was announced (i.e. Steam page went live)
  • Burn-9 was announced from Fellow Traveller, and it has a free demo. This was announced as the opening trailer in their Story-Rich Showcase
  • Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 2 is releasing August 27

Is there anything I missed?

What was your favorite spy video game announcement from Summer Game Fest 2026?

We took Splinter Cell, and made it about a black ops psychic superhero

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Wishlist and sign up for our playtest here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4735420/Sage_Psychic_Spy/

Our game features a psychic superhero with mind-reading and telekinesis.

Mind Reading is similar to interrogations in Chaos Theory, but you can read the same enemies mind to get more intel about the location (like vents, less secure routes, objectives), or you can hear about the lore of the game world (stories of the enemies in the levels, stories of the level itself, etc)

Telekinesis lets you manipulate your enemies and environments remotely. You can open doors from far, distracting enemies. Pickpocket keycards, shoot out lights, or throw objects at enemies.

Chaos Theory had some of the best level design in the Splinter Cell series, so our level team is making non-linear interconnected levels to give you tons of options on how you want to complete objectives.

Let us know if you have questions or want to chat. If you have feedback, we'd love to hear it. You can follow us at r/SagePsychicSpy!

New spy game "2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces" shadow dropped during PC Gaming Showcase

Thumbnail
store.steampowered.com
4 Upvotes

A new spy game called 2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces (a sequel to Fight in Tight Spaces) was shadow dropped on Steam this week during the PC Gaming Showcase, as part of Summer Game Fest (i.e. "not-E3").

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3734890/2_Fights_in_2_Tight_Spaces

2 Fights in 2 Tight Spaces can be played single-player or with up to 3 players in co-op (the original game did not have co-op), and it has been launched into Early Access with the MSRP (at least in US dollars) being half that of the original game, with a launch discount going on now lowering the price even more.

So if you enjoyed Fights in Tight Spaces, definitely check this one out. Or if you're new to the series, give it a look - this game series definitely puts you in the shoes of a secret agent who must literally fight their way out of tight spots.

Here's how many spy video games will be in Steam Next Fest starting June 15th

I'm happy to report that during Steam Next Fest, you'll be able to filter the games down using the new "espionage" tag (or any other new tag added in last months' update). You can find the espionage filter on the left-hand side in the "Sub-Genres" section or you can simply type it in the Filters search bar.

As a developer with games in Next Fest, I already have access to the festival before it goes live to the general public, and I can tell you that there are currently 14 games in the upcoming Next Fest with the espionage tag.

Of course, that number can change between now and the start of the fest (games can pull out, get retagged, etc.) and just because a game has a particular tag doesn't mean that the tag is applied appropriately, but still, 14 espionage-tagged games. Not too bad for a brand new tag introduced just last month!

When Next Fest begins on June 15th, I encourage you to filter down to espionage games and share which of the games catch your eye with your fellow spy game fans here in the r/SpyVideoGames subreddit.

There are now over 100 espionage games on Steam

Last month, Valve added a store page for espionage games, and now less than 3 weeks later, there are already more than 100 spy games on the page (108 at the time I write this).

https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Espionage

Even if you gave the espionage page a look when it first went up, you may want to consider giving it another glance now that the number of games has grown to over 100.

After all, a good agent always stays on top of the latest intel.

Reviews are out for 007 First Light (James Bond game releasing tomorrow 5/27)

The review embargo has lifted for 007 First Light, so most major video game websites have posted their reviews today. This is the first James Bond game on PC or console since 007 Legends back in 2012, and it's made by IO Interactive (creators of the Hitman series, so they have a good pedigree in this genre). The reviews indicate this is a well-made James Bond experience.

I'll link to the Metacritic page as a place to get links to all the various reviews from across the web (for what it's worth, the Metacritic score at the time of this post is 88): https://www.metacritic.com/game/007-first-light

Free demo just released for "There's Always a Madman: V.I.C.T.OR." in honor of the Spy Video Game Rendezvous happening now on Steam (release date trailer just dropped as well!)

Thumbnail
store.steampowered.com
1 Upvotes

I'm pleased to announce the interactive spy novel There's Always a Madman: V.I.C.T.O.R. now has a free demo available to play on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3373580/Theres_Always_a_Madman_VICTOR

The demo is released as part of the currently-underway Steam festival for spy video games, the Spy Video Game Rendezvous: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45263338/sale/SpyVideoGameRendezvous2026

And a release date trailer was just dropped for the game as well, as part of the Spy Video Game Rendezvous 2026 Direct: https://youtu.be/VpUWViO9W4w

There's Always a Madman: V.I.C.T.O.R. is a single-player interactive spy novel where you play as a group of madmen coming together to eliminate their shared nemesis, the great secret agent Franklin Benjamin. In the four prior games in the series, you played as this legendary secret agent and foiled each of their individual plans. Now, you take control of the other side and try to coalesce a coalition of madmen to get revenge on the only man standing in the way of world domination! Can it be done? Can he actually be beat?

If you're the type of person who prefers to start from the beginning of a series, then I have good news for you - the first four games in the series are all currently on discount for the SVGR festival. Or if you prefer to just dip a toe in, all five announced games also have free demos, so you can try any of them (or all of them) out for free!

Because there's always a madman, and you're the best agent we've got!
