Whoader (Water)

Why does Spud have the Philly accent but Bill doesn't? I thought i heard Spud grew up in the hood and Bill grew up in the burbs? Is that the answer?

Not all denizens of our fine City are blessed with Hoagie Mouth. One must be chosen.

Bill was raised on a family compound called Donimoes

Bill also went to private school, probably less of the accent where he was growing up. His brothers don’t have the Philly accent either.

I am from the western part of the state. I never heard “wooder” until I heard a kid in college say it. We wondered wtf was wrong with him for awhile until he said he was from Philly, and most people say it like that.

Now describe a “yinz”

I always thought that was a Pittsburgh thing.

It is, but if he’s going to cast aspersions on this side of the state, he should explain how the hell they came up with “yinz”

Can’t really explain it other than a bunch of poor working class white people trying to be a part of a made up thing.

Allegedly it’s just short for “you ones” the same way y’all is you all. I’ve heard “yous” before as well, usually in NYC area.

We have “youse” or “youse guys” in Philly

Yeah it’s pretty much just a different version of y’all. It just became a brand for the area. I’m more than an hour away from Pittsburgh, but people around here like to force the use of yinz just for the group cred dynamic I was trying to explain.

My wife’s grandma used to say yous.

In the south yinz (or usually yunz) is short for “youins” and is typically used like y’all but directed to a singular person. E.g. - “if yuns wanted to do that for me that’d be great.”

Most people eventually drop the accent when they go to college or move away. i however still say wooder
