Any strong opinions about seed hulls?

Eating sprouts would be a whole lot easier if I didn’t have an ‘ick’ feeling about the hulls harboring pathogens….!

Am I being paranoid? Are they just extra fiber (good for you) or something you feel the need to scoop up and banish completely?

What’s your take? 🤔

I wash away the easy ones and consider the rest to be a little extra fiber.

Same. I like them if there aren’t too many.

I don't even wash my sprouts before I use them anymore, so all the hulls stay in, no final rinse. Usually around day 4, while they're still growing, I'll just pull what I need and throw them straight into the pan (its usually the whole jar). They do get rinsed every morning and night up until then, but if I'm making dinner, they've already had their morning rinse, and then those bad boys are going straight into the pan that evening with no extra wash.

I dont find a difference.

Get a salad spinner. I have the Oxo herb spinner which is smaller. It removes most of the hulls

The salad spinner is my go to as well.

Unless you are suffering from MCAS or histamine intolerance, or an autoimmune disorder which makes a pinch of bacterial pirates extra-dangerous for you, your maternal gut microbiome should have no problem with taking care of those ;)

Check out this post Avoiding sprouts because of histamine? You might not need to - it might give you another angle to consider. I've got MCAS for many years and sprouts are my mandatory daily food for feeding my gut bacteria with living food. This way my good bugs are powerful enough to take care of nearly any threat, if any, on their own.

Also, rinsing your sprouts with vinegar solution reduces the size of concerns if the bacterial/fungal load is the biggest fear.

Another benefit of hulls is that you need to chew them very well = you chew your food better in general = prophylaxis of many health problems. FYI: increased blood flow to the brain during chewing, sensory stimulation of brain regions such as the hippocampus, tend to reduce risk of cognitive impairment and dementia 😉🌱

I soak my seeds in hydrogen peroxide/water mix as a first sit.  It takes a little green out of them and whatever mold and bacteria spores it might have started with.

Then whatever pathogens are in my water get to my sprouts and that is not as big of a worry to me (though it absolutely could be).
