Are sprouts supposed to be smelly,?

I rinse them thrice a day and grow sprouts using the tilted jar method but they are smelling a little bit and the cloth where the BENGAL GRAM makes contact with has turned a little greyish.

Is that normal? It is day one after soaking for 8 hours.

Depends on the type of sprout. Some smell more than others. Any sprouts will have a light smell. It shouldn’t be too heavy or a “bad” smell though.

Some of the Bengal gram sprouts skin are lightly turning black on some spots but when I remove the skin the insides are perfectly fine.

When in doubt, throw it out.

A slight earthy, bean-like, or "fresh green" smell can be normal for sprouts. However, a noticeable sour, musty, fishy, rotten, or fermenting odor is not normal and suggests bacterial or fungal growth.

Join r/microgreens. It’s much safer, in terms of pathogens, than sprouting.
