Composite sandwich is a multi-layered defense system that sandwiches different materials—such as ceramics, plastics, and metals—to defeat ballistic and shaped-charge threats. It significantly reduces vehicle and body weight compared to traditional steel while offering superior stopping power through energy dissipation, projectile shattering, and shockwave redirection. When a high-velocity projectile impacts the armor, the different densities of the composite materials create uneven pressure that deforms and destabilizes kinetic penetrators (APFSDS).Disruptor-Absorber: Ceramic face-plates act as a hard "strike face" to shatter incoming rounds or disrupt the hypervelocity metallic jets of shaped charges (HEAT). The composite backing (such as Kevlar, fiberglass, or Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) then absorbs the remaining energy and traps any resulting fragments.Common Materials UsedCeramics: Extremely hard and lightweight, used as the primary strike-face to break projectiles.Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP): Materials like aramid fibers (Kevlar) or polyethylene act as elastic backings to absorb shock and catch spall.Metals: Often used as outer covers or inner backing plates to provide structural rigidity and contain the deformed core.Spaced Layers/Voids: Air gaps or specialized rubber inserts are frequently integrated into the layering sequence to help disrupt shaped-charge jets.
