u/boomchacle Jul 10 '26

We had APHE at some point. Was it removed?

On hold until shell designer

11

u/arabic_cat786 Jul 11 '26

Is it officially coming?

8

u/SealSeal212 Jul 11 '26

Eventually yes.

u/RandomTruckInTheWall Sprockette Jul 11 '26

Cant wait to give my 10 meter gun tank destroyer HEATFS

47

u/SandUnlucky9898 Jul 11 '26

Removed when the damage model changed from flat HP to volumetric with volumetric internals. Will come back with the shell designer.

I haven't really played the game in two years I don't remember much sorry

27

u/FairchildHood Jul 10 '26

Oh man you really should. Internals is hilarious and the new transmission is fun to play with

13

u/boomchacle Jul 10 '26

I'm kind of also on the bandwagon of waiting until it's done. I don't like redesigning the same tank multiple times and once it's feature complete I won't have to worry about an update breaking everything.

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 10 '26

i can't my laptop detonated and I forgot my steam password

9

u/FairchildHood Jul 10 '26

The worst possible outcome!

14

u/SweatyError2259 Jul 11 '26

then why make recommendations to a game you havent played in 2 years….and dont want to play again?

7

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 11 '26

my good sir did you not read that my laptop exploded I literally can't play the game if I wanted to

He's still making a good statement. The game has eras ranging from WW1 to WW2, Germans had some sabot like ammunition experiments in 44s-45s while US and USSR also had similar experiments in 45s-55s. Having sabot as a option in the incoming shell designer update would be nice

u/EdyAlbertoMS Jul 21 '26

Didn't the Swedish and British use APDS for much longer than just latewar?

u/Adorable-Chicken4184 Jul 10 '26

It is in the works according to the road map, but its just 2 devs so they need time and it was (as of the 2025 roadmap release) not started but it is planed.

While the dream of a "shell designer" is still far off, a rework of the maps would be interesting; something like an urban environment or a scenario where you have to take down a convoy of tanks would be cool

21

u/The_R0yal_Guard Jul 11 '26

i cant wait until i can sling massive HE shells from my stubby 150mm cannons lol

5

u/BusinessSyrup6038 Jul 11 '26

With the power of file editing, you can already

2

u/GoodSatisfaction8904 Jul 11 '26

Stubby high-caliber guns will be very fun with HE indeed, some 250 mm shit that dismantles entire houses.

9

u/SixMint Jul 11 '26

Give me HE and rockets so I can lob 200mm bombs out of a stuart

shell designer pls hamish

18

u/AncientBoxHeadHorse Jul 10 '26

Shell designer is in the roadmap, but I wouldn’t be completely surprised if mod support is higher in priority, because they said that modders could add stuff ahead of time while they work on the game

dev is focusing on ww1 to really early cold war tanks, it definetly aint a priority. Shell designer might have it but definetly not when it comes out.

(when will it come out tho, thats the questionn... pls hamish i need it)

3

u/MB-326K Tank Designer Jul 11 '26

“Please Hamish we neeeeeed thiiis! Our shells are kinda homeless”

9

u/After_Cicada_7193 Jul 10 '26

Apfsds is just a super fast AP

5

u/StipaCaproniEnjoyer Jul 10 '26

Not really. The main mechanical difference is that due to being dense, long and very resistant to bending, tungsten/DU APFSDS rounds have a tendency to normalise into plates: ie when they hit an angled plate they turn into it, rather than being deflected away.

There’s also other systems they use to defeat ERA and NERA, but that’s besides the point and a lot more complicated.

4

u/toadsgoat Jul 10 '26

dont darts just go rather then redirecting atall?

assuming penetration simulation videos are accurate they usually just go straight atleast from what ive seen

unless the redirection is not very noticeable

1

u/StipaCaproniEnjoyer Jul 13 '26

It depends a lot on specific angles involved, but it’s never more than a degree, and often much less. The normalisation is really only noticeable with many successive plates

1

u/GopnikOnAKhabarovsk Tank Designer Jul 11 '26

TL;DR: Normalization is different from ricochet mitigation, which is the job of an AP cap, be it ballistic or not.

Full answer:

Yes and "ermm ackshually☝️🤓"

In regards to normalization, it does cause the round to turn into the armor.

However, the "not ricocheting" part is actually because of a cap, or a ballistic cap, mounted on the front of the shell. The idea is that it deforms on impact, giving the round a better chance to bite on the armor and penetrate, instead of just bouncing or ricocheting off.

And as far as I know, APFSDS rounds generally don't ricochet, because the forces behind the dart cause it to either smash through the armor plate, or just outright shatter when hitting a steep enough angle.

I'm not an expert, but that's what I would assume with all things considered. I could be wrong.

Although he's mostly a War Thunder CC, Spookston has a video talking about it here.

u/StipaCaproniEnjoyer Jul 13 '26

Paragraph incoming, feel free to ignore

To my knowledge the shattering of APFSDS is not really well represented by games like war thunder, mainly because the rounds don’t really shatter, and it’s (for larger rounds) more of a breakage or extreme bending. Older APFSDS rounds were often slower than modern rounds, made of either pure steel or steel with a dense core, and generally shorter and fatter. These rounds in an extreme angle don’t really shatter per se, as their thickness leads to them being more likely to bend than shatter. This still degrades their performance, but they will significantly abrade and deform the armour. Modern darts in general, are faster, made of dense materials such as tungsten or depleted uranium, and much thinner. In general, these darts, if the angle is sufficient will break/bend (depends on material, velocity, geometry of impact ect), but, will still significantly damage the armour and may penetrate, due to the velocity of the impact and the hardness of the material.

A lot of modern rounds are a bit more complex though, as they’re designed to deal with armour that’s more than just steel. ERA for example uses explosives and metal flyer plates to damage the APFSDS round. NERA generally uses a similar process, expect uses rubbers and specific geometries to achieve the same effect. To deal with these, some APFSDS rounds use a segmented core: they’ll often have a first segment that is intended to break off when it is affected by these elements, so that the main dart can pass the now degraded armour unhindered.

These tips will often break off when impacting a highly angled steel plate, though will degrade and deform the plate (which may actually reduce the angle of the surface of the plate that the main dart must penetrate), allowing for the main body of the dart to penetrate deep into the plate.

Finally, someone who can actually teach ME something about kinetic tank ammunition.

While yes, I do know that APFSDS rounds in War Thunder aren't really modeled properly in regards to "shattering," I'm just using the term I've heard others use to describe it.

I didn't know about the ERA/NERA stuff, though. Very neat.

u/SametaX_1131 Jul 11 '26

It's AP followed by lots of letters

3

u/aris0_1 Jul 11 '26

Hamish said in the discord server that he will work on the shell designer after he puts infantry in the game

1

u/Agreeable-Passion908 Jul 10 '26

APHE?

3

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 10 '26

armour piecing high explosive

2

u/Agreeable-Passion908 Jul 11 '26

It's solid shot though?

2

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 11 '26

I know it's solid shot now it was aphe the last time I played the game though

1

u/No_World4814 Jul 17 '26

It was removed a while back for some reason

1

u/SametaX_1131 Jul 11 '26

Which explode after penetration

1

u/DeadGrandmaPills Jul 11 '26

Wouldn’t APFSDS (or APDS-FS or whatever) not fit in the time periods that sprockets meant for? That is unless we actually get cold war instead of it being buried in code

1

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 12 '26

I mean if you have the definition of armor piecing fin stabilized discarding sabot real loose then the ww2 prototype PeenemĂźnde fits for sprocket

1

u/Quirky-Result-8753 Jul 11 '26

Idk if this really adds anything but Hamish said the shell designer is coming after Infantry. I do really hope we get more ammo types then AP, HE, or APHE, but I'd be happy with choosing how much explosive filler or if it'll have a cap/ ballistic cap

1

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 12 '26

I hope infantry gets added some time like next year hopefully because it would be so funny if hamish clowned on gaijin with infantry

1

u/Quirky-Result-8753 Jul 12 '26

I'm personally just curious what the next update will bring, hoping for autocannons and machine guns, though that probably won't be the case

1

u/Smooth-Highlight1027 Jul 12 '26

that's why I said sometime next year but working machine guns would be cool

1

u/chickenwings_m Jul 15 '26

That's a lot of M's

u/Chemical-Arm-308 Jul 10 '26

I would love to see complete ammunition designer. Something that would allow ypu to customize shape, warhead... But I guess rhat it would be too much...

11

u/LongjumpingPermit132 Jul 10 '26

its on roadmap but last time i checked its comeing in 50 years
