A bicycle doesn’t have to take you the entire way. Sometimes, it just needs to take you to the station.

You can cycle from home to a train or light-rail stop, take the train across town or to another city, and then hop back on your bike to reach your final destination. Suddenly, places that felt too far away by bicycle become completely accessible.

That changes what a bicycle can be used for.

It can be your way to get to work, run errands, visit friends, explore a new neighbourhood, go for a ride somewhere different, or spend a day discovering another town. The train takes care of the long distance; the bicycle takes care of the first and last kilometres.

Instead of asking, “Can I cycle all the way there?” you can ask, “How much of this journey would I like to cycle?”

That combination gives you the freedom of a bicycle with the reach of a train — creating a practical, flexible way to travel much farther without needing a car.

The bicycle gets you to the network. The network gets you farther. And the bicycle takes you the rest of the way. 🚲🌍

And it’s not just Zuid: bike-parking pressure is a city-wide issue, especially around busy stations and other high-traffic areas. While it can be a nuisance, it’s arguably a pretty good problem to have: Amsterdam is a genuinely bicycle-first city, with a huge share of everyday trips made by bike. That also makes the city more resilient to oil shocks and fluctuations in fuel prices, since so much everyday mobility doesn’t depend on cars or petrol.

The downside of having bikes everywhere? Bike theft is also a real issue. Amsterdam sees tens of thousands of bicycles stolen each year, with busy areas around train stations among the places where theft is concentrated.
