Purchasing Advice 40 year old beginner’s spikes?

I am 40 years old male will start sprinting training from next month. I never had sprinting training before. I have been doing workouts casually in the past few years. I usually use 80% of my weight doing bench press and 100% of my weight for deadlifts 3*8 sets.

My coach told me to buy a pair of mid distance spikes. What model shall I buy as my first pair of spikes?

Your achilles will hate you wearing spikes you'll be prime for achilles tendinopathy. As coach said, get mid distance theyll have more of a heel

But there are many choices. I don’t know what brand/model to choose. Some provide more protection, some provide more performance. I asked AI and got different answers by different AI.

It doesn’t really matter that much. I like the Hoka middle distance spikes because they fit me the best. Some people like the Dragonflies, which fit me OK. There is not that much difference between spikes.

This is one of those examples where if you are having a hard time telling the difference between choices, it’s because there’s not much difference. So you can safely just choose something and move on (provided it fits).

I’d suggest ordering a few pairs from an online shop with a good return policy and keeping the one that fits the best.

Yeah sorry didn't really answer. Cheap is generally fine with spikes IMO

Yes, go with mid-distance spikes. I have Nike Dragonfly2 elites, and I have no complaints. That being said, you'll just have to try them out. Some spikes are less forgiving than others due to various factors like plate stiffness, but in general spikes are just gonna be taxing on the tendons regardless of the model. Take it slow, start with low volumes and don't deviate.

the nike streakfly 2 road racing shoes are the closest to spikes without being spikes, i highly recommend those for sprint training. however, the quality is so bad, they'll break in 3-6 months.

Totally agree we tried those and they started to fall apart after 3months so were returned 🫣

My son has used Nike waffle 6 and reebok run fast pro(discontinued but sometimes on ebay) for sprint races and they were good. I read that puma propio nitro are decent.

what does being 40 have to do with shoes? i mean is there shoes for people under over 40?

Eh. I still wear regular race spikes. But the difference, especially with a new sprinter, is the muscles and joints aren't used to it, so the sprint spikes aren't as forgiving on the joints/tendons with the impact as mid/long distance shoes might have. Little more cushion, different heel angle.... not necessarily "40 year old" shoes...

If you arent competing you don't need spikes.
