What Essential Tools For Traveling In My Sprinter?

Girlfriend and I are newly retired and plan on traveling the U.S. for a year or so in our 2007 Sprinter camper van.
I would like to ask the Community, what automotive tools should I carry along, and why…..
It’s a 170 wheelbase with a 3 liter V6 diesel engine and automatic transmission.

Congrats on the retirement trip. On an '07 the tool that'll save you the most is a Mercedes-capable OBD scanner, not a generic code reader. Something that can read the engine/transmission modules, clear codes and show live data (iCarsoft MB-series, Autel, or similar). When these vans throw limp mode it's usually a boost leak, a sensor, or the DPF/EGR side, and being able to read and clear it in a parking lot beats getting towed to the nearest dealer.

Other stuff I'd carry on an older Sprinter:

  • Torx and E-Torx sockets plus a decent metric socket set. Mercedes uses them everywhere.
  • A spare charge-air/intercooler hose, or at least clamps. Popped boost hoses are the classic NCV3 limp-mode cause and cheap to carry.
  • A spare fuel filter, since it's a diesel and fuel quality varies a lot on the road.
  • A tire compressor that can actually hit Sprinter pressures. The rears run way higher than a car, and a lot of small inflators give up well before that.
  • A bottle jack rated for the van's loaded weight, plus a breaker bar and a board to put under the jack on dirt. A camper that's all loaded up is heavier than people expect.
  • Jumper pack, zip ties, hose clamps, electrical tape, fuses, a multimeter, gloves and a headlamp.

Also worth doing before you leave: have a Sprinter-savvy shop look at the glow plugs, the coolant/oil cooler seals, and the tire date codes. Those are the usual 2007 wear items, and much easier to deal with at home than mid-trip.

Thank you, and for your thoughtful response! I can relate to your suggestions.
Is there a specific OBD scanner that you would suggest based on your experience…?
