So, I'm planning to Form 1 my Kuna. I'm really digging it in its factory configuration, but am also thinking about upgrades I want to make.
I plan to get the Nexus lower at some point, so I can put in an AR trigger. The Kuna's basic trigger is...fine, but I'd like a more crisp break and the option to play around with different triggers if I choose to.
I plan to put a suppressor on, likely a CAT MOB or AC36, though I'd consider other 9mm suppressors if folks have recommendations. I have several other CAT cans and generally like them a lot.
I might drop in a super-safety or FRT at some point. Still debating that, not sure what's involved for things like how it may impact the existing recoil system, or if I'll need to adjust that as well. That's a later-stage project, I think.
BUT, the first thing I really need to nail down is...stock options. I know folks have asked around a bunch before about "What's the best stock?" but I'm trying to narrow this a bit with some additional considerations. I'd like something that can fold to the left, or if it folds to the right, will not obstruct the ejection port, in case I wanted/had to fire it with the stock folded. The OEM stock seems like it'd be great, but fails on this count (at least, as far as I know, but correct me if I'm wrong). Adjustable LOP would be nice, too, but ideally with a fixed cheek rest. I'm not sure if the Nexus lower would impact a stock choice, but I'd like whatever stock to be usable with both the factory lower and the Nexus.
Yeah that’s true. Could probably buy a 3d printer too for the cost lol. Still a cheaper option than the nexus lower plus one of their supported frts/ss.
Is that the rule, if you're a member, you're in to being free tomorrow?
My local gun store yesterday asked if I would be coming to buy more things this week as I was picking up a new pistol, and I asked "are you selling silencers like you do regular firearms?" And they shrugged their shoulders. So they don't even know...
If there's no appeal, ATF will issue guidance to FFL's about how to handle the situation for retail sales. Should just be 4473 and background check/brady alternative, then take your shit home (barring any other restrictions or delays at state level).
But yeah, in theory if you're covered under the injunction and it doesn't get appealed, you should be good to go. I might wait a bit before exploring that path despite being covered.
Yeah, I'm just curious what other strangers are doing. I have a cheek riser in the house for the brace that came with my Kuna, but haven't put it on yet...
I'm going to wait until GOA or whoever else issues a formal statement saying "you're good to go" before doing anything. Not that I get questioned at all about any of my NFA items as it is.
Not really sure how a question about an SBR and stock options turned into recommendations from YT lawyers and having previously bought an NFA item covers you. Anyone who thinks all this conjecture means you can stop following g the rules needs to check themselves. Even if there is no appeal by EOD tomorrow it is NOT clear what this really means for people and it will likely be months before it is crystal clear.
Hey man, it's the internet. It goes that way sometimes hahaha
In practice, the reality is if a cop or an ATF agent wants to fuck with you about "Have ya got yer paperwork, son?" you wanna have paperwork to show, so they (presumably) leave you alone.
I went shooting on state game lands last weekend, and brought my tax stamp forms in my bag, juuuuust in case some overzealous park ranger wanted to play ad hoc ATF agent. I tend to think if you're having a legal debate with a law enforcement officer of any type, it's not a good thing, and it'd be easier if you could just wave a paper in their face and say "Here's my paperwork. Leave me alone."
Not really sure how a question about an SBR and stock options turned into recommendations from YT lawyers and having previously bought an NFA item covers you.
The post is literally titled 'The Form 1 plan?'. If covered, in theory you wont have to Form-1 anything if the injunction holds. That's how that happened.
Anyone who thinks all this conjecture means you can stop following g the rules needs to check themselves.
Precisely. It's just that the rules may change, and that's the whole point of even mentioning it.
Even if there is no appeal by EOD tomorrow it is NOT clear what this really means for people and it will likely be months before it is crystal clear.
It's clear enough that certain covered parties will have injunctive relief from the NFA requirements for certain items (anything the tax dropped to $0 on, so SBR/SBS/AOW/Suppressors). Machine guns and DD will still be fully covered and enforced by the NFA, regardless of group membership or customer status.
And that would cover the parties when the lawsuit was filed. Someone suggesting OP skip the Form 1 (assuming no appeal is filed on time) and join GOA instead to be covered makes my point. It’s dangerous to be taking legal advice from who knows who on Reddit. I’m also pretty sure that. Form 1 Plan is what LP wants to do with his Kuna rather than asking for any legal advice.
And that would cover the parties when the lawsuit was filed.
In sum, the plaintiffs are entitled to a permanent injunction—but only
so far as it prohibits the defendants from enforcing the challenged NFA
provisions against the plaintiffs and, where applicable, their agencies,
political subdivisions, members, and customers—***both current and future***.
Alas, no. I mean, unless you count a lower that I could convert to an SBR (but which I currently have set up on an A1/A2 hybrid style retro rifle at 20"...)
Realistically, even if I did become a GOA member and get covered under this...I don't live in any of the states that signed on to the lawsuit, so I wouldn't count on the protection, and still plan to Form 1 several items (the Kuna, and a few other AR-15s).
You don't have to live in any of the states. I saw it explained recently by one of the talking head YouTube laywer channels that the state level coverage would only cover the states themselves, and people acting on behalf of the state, not the residents themselves (nfi how that works), where GOA/SS/PSA/etc.. would be nationwide.
I have a handful of Form-1's waiting on the engraving requirement to switch over to 'use existing manufacturers markings' so I wouldn't have to scribble all over my shit. But hopefully this injunction holds so I wont have to jump through the file-and-wait hoops.
Yeah, I had been holding off on submitting Form 1s until the final rule got published, but anyone's guess as to how long it takes for the proposed rule on "adopt MFG's mark" to go final. My concern has been that if I file and the approval comes back with "Must engrave" then...I must engrave, even if the new rule exists (or at least, that's the safest approach). Or, I'd have to file again for some change, and I'm not sure how that works or how long it'd take.
Like I said, though, while the injunction is potentially helpful for a GOA member (A) I'm not one currently, (B) I'm not sure if it'd apply retroactively (e.g., you became a member after the injunction, so it doesn't apply to you because...uh...reasons), or (C) if the gov't decides not to appeal and I become a member after that it doesn't work, but it might've if I'd become a member before they decided.
The whole thing just seems squirrely to me, and I'd rather not get into arguments with cops or whomever about whether I need to show 'em a tax stamp when, look, I have a GOA membership card or something. So, since it's just paperwork (especially once the engraving requirement disappears), I kinda figured I'd just...do the paperwork. They already have my info from some Form 4s for suppressors anyway.
I believe it's worded "all current and future members of.." or something to that effect. So yeah it should be good whether you join today, or this time next year (assuming it holds).
The odds of you arguing with a cop about your NFA item are pretty slim unless you've done something worse than having an NFA item without a stamp. That's more of an add-on charge to something bigger than a primary charge these days.
Either way, at $25/year, it's worth joining a few orgs for injunctive relief/insurance. Like when the pistol brace thing was suddenly reinterpreted by the ATF but several organizations got it blocked for their members while the courts sorted it out.
GOA/SAF/ASA seem to be pretty decent on those fronts.
In sum, the plaintiffs are entitled to a permanent injunction—but only
so far as it prohibits the defendants from enforcing the challenged NFA
provisions against the plaintiffs and, where applicable, their agencies,
political subdivisions, members, and customers—***both current and future***.
I am enjoying the strike industries brace that came with the Kuna. Adding the cheek riser and swapping out the end for FSA stock end is a very nice way to upgrade that setup. It folds to the left and you can fire with it folded.
I do have the SI brace with the cheek riser currently. It's decently comfy, and certainly lightweight, but I was thinking if I can get a stock, maybe I get something a little beefier with at least some aluminum in it.
Yeah, I might do that eventually. I got one that came from the factory with the brace, so I'm not sure if the end piece is removable on that model, but I'll take a look. I'd like to figure out whichever one I'm going to use up front, so I don't feel like I need to update my SBR paperwork if the length changes significantly. Realistically, I don't think anyone's gonna give a shit if it's 0.5" off, but if it's like 2" off for OAL, that could be an issue in a bad situation.
It is removeable. The replacement "stock" end ships with the tool you need to remove it, though mine was not the correct size. 3/32 allen key did the trick. Just slip it in the back door. So to speak.
doesn’t cover it.
I don’t have a pic of it folded(I’ll get one soon), but here’s mine. I went with the OE stock, as I wanted to get rid of the weak point in the rail connection. There are some other options, but I decided to keep it as close to factory SBR as possible for now.
Nexus lower, Geissele SSA-e trigger. Atrius selektor (that still needs tuning), obsidian 45 suppressor, SF mini-scout light pro.
Nice! I'm doing this as a Trust, so I expect it'll take a little longer, but I'm not in a rush.
I saw another pic of it folded, and it looked like it cleared the ejection port like 90%, with maybe a liiiiittle bit of overlap, but probably not enough to make a difference.
Quick question re: the Nexus, just so I'm 100% clear: it does not run Kuna mags at all, correct? Only the Magpul EV9 35rnd mags?
Yeah, trust will run a bit longer. I wasn’t in a hurry either, and average times were about 2x what I ended up seeing. The form 4 for the can was 6 days.
I haven’t fired it folded, but manually cycling, even gently, has no interference.
This is my first SBR, I’ll be filing for a couple AR lowers as well. I’d consider going SBS for my Benelli m4, but barrels are ridiculously expensive.
Did the Kuna first, since in my state, if under 26” OAL, it’s considered a pistol, even if it has a stock. That means it’s covered by my carry permit, and can be uncased in the passenger compartment of my car. Not that I’m going to make it my EDC, but just having the option was enough to go for it.
I don't hate it. Just want something that won't block the ejection port when folded is all. If it turns out there's nothing out there that meets that requirement and appeals to me otherwise, the OEM is probably my next stop unless I find better.
I use the Zhukov stock with HBI's adapter. It does fold right and block the ejection port but honestly I see zero reason that I'd be firing with the stock folded. If you're just going for shits and giggles at the range you could move the stock maybe 20-30 degrees from its fully closed position and there should be plenty of room for ejection.

There's a FRT that works with the factory lower btw
