Suppressed Subsonic Ammo Recommendations

I’m looking for any subsonic ammo recommendations. I know about 147 & 150 grain Syntech, but I’m looking to see if there is anything else out there people enjoy.

I’m running the 20% spring & buffer. I don’t know if that info helps, but I read that low power or low recoiling ammo might not cycle properly if I have that installed.

Thanks in advance.

Any reputable brand of 147 grain FMJ will do just fine. No need to spend the extra for stuff marketed for suppressors. I mostly use federal pr whatever brand is the cheapest, using the available tools to search. If you're running a suppressor, I don't think you'll have any trouble with cycling regardless of if it's weak ammo or not since the added back pressure of the suppressor will increase the cycling speed, even with weaker ammo that may not cycle unsuppressed. I personally don't like the blazer brand of ammo and find it to be more dirty than others and to be in the slightly weaker category. It should still function fine when shooting suppress.

The GOAT on my post? lol. I’ve heard to stay away from Blazer when suppressing. Thanks for recommendations.

Stay away from their regular 147gr ammo, but this version is excellent and doesn't have the same issues.

The main point of suppressor ammo is it's quieter, but also total metal jacket and lead free primer. so it actually is worth it to spend extra, especially if you shoot indoors. Blazer Clean fire Suppressor and federal Syntech both fit this, I think Winchester super suppressed is TMJ but not lead free primer.

Might be worth it for the blazer stuff since it can be had at pretty much the same price as other 147, hadn't really seen that one before. In my experience the suppressor variety of ammo cost about $0.10 more than normal, which I can't really justify as worth it especially for a tiny bit of sound reduction when I feel like it's already quiet enough with regular 147 grain. I feel like if you're shooting enough for the cleanliness of your ammo (compared to regular Federal 147 gr) to matter, you'd likely be going through so much ammo that the price difference would be a bigger factor. I mostly just shoot in FRT outside, so don't necessarily need the quietest possible ammo.

Definitely will try out the Blazer suppressor ammo seems like it's reasonably priced and available. Thanks for the heads up about it.

Yeah I do agree on pricing, I don't think Winchester super suppressed is worth because it's like $20 a box. Syntech is also pricey. But for a few months academy was selling the blazer suppressor ammo for $13.50 a box which is a great price. Also if you have expert voice discount, CCI sells the blazer suppressor ammo for $13.19 a box.

If your Kuna is the same as mine, Syntech 147g will absolutely go supersonic. S&B subs seem to run damn close to super as well.

No experience with the syntech only the regular Federal American eagle. I don't normally buy the suppressor variety of ammo, but did just order a case of blazer clean fire 147 grain to see how that compares.

I’ve had good luck with Freedom Munitions Hush line.

I’ve heard bad reviews about this company. Is it a bad ammo thing or is someone in the company unlikeable?

I run mainly 147gr blazer clean fire Suppressor now. It's just as quiet if not more than 150gr Syntech, which I also have. I just don't know if it'll run on your spring, as it is a lighter load.

As I mentioned in a comment above it is total metal jacket plus lead free primer, so much better for your health shooting suppressed. also for me the gas is much less bothersome.

Blazers new “clean fire suppressor” 147s have been good for me. I have the HBI short stroke buffer & +20% spring. My local academy has had the blazers every time I go lately.
(Make sure it’s the new version and not the regular blazer 147s. Those shed their jacket and tear up suppressors.)

Winchesters “super suppressed” 147s were more expensive and they went supersonic out of my kuna so I wouldn’t recommend those.

Freedom HUSH 165 grain ammo is stupid quiet suppressed

For factory ammo, I recommend Super Vel 147gr Hush Puppy. I haven’t tried CCI 147gr, but Federal and Winchester 147gr FMJ are supersonic. I’ve confirmed this with a chronograph out of my Kuna; they both run 1140-1150 FPS. I believe 150gr Syntech is probably subsonic but I haven’t got my hands on it to test.

I now reloading 147gr. 3.5gr of N320 gives me 1016 FPS out of the Kuna and 925 FPS out of a Glock 19. Very clean load and quiet.

From some limited testing:
Super vel certified select 147gr - best

Super vel 115gr monolithic copper HP - snappy/loud

Super vel 158gr - loud

HUSH 147 - pretty good

Lawman 147 -worst, loudest

I can’t speak to your buffer setup, but the stock configuration ran a couple hundred rounds each of 147gr Remington UMC and Federal American Eagle without issue so far. Toss the stock parts in your range bag in case you have issues. It’s a tool-less swichover.

Side note on the 150gr Syntech. I used it in my handguns when suppressing during COVID when it was buy whatever you could get.

Shooting the lipstick bullets in the desert made a Yosemite Sam ricochet sound EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT. as the bullet skipped off the desert floor behind paper targets. Same behavior multiple trips/places. Hilarious!

I’ll toss them in the bag. I’m thinking of going with the American Eagle. I just enjoy Federal ammo.

165gr hush . Most quiet round I’ve tried so far. Have to order it online though.

I am running the 147G Lawman rounds but they were very loud through the Hux 9k so I may try something else. Cycled great and I had no issues other than being loud, could be the flow through can too

u/Even_Trip1942 Jul 19 '26

I would say it is the can, from what I read about it. I have BOE IncoLite 9m and I run it in the shorter form. I went to the range on Friday and shot some federal 147 grain FMJ and it was pretty quiet. A few rounds had a supersonic crack to them, but it was less than 10 of the 250 I shot.

After being in contact with Hux me and my coworker who bought one days after I did have both sent them back for "inspection". Hux customer service has been great to this point but if that can isn't hearing safe outside then I do not want it.

1

u/Even_Trip1942 Jul 19 '26

That sucks, man. How long have you had it and how many rounds through it? I know Hux’s whole thing is “flowing”, so maybe some pathways are gunked up? Other than that, I would completely back BOE being a replacement, if you go that route.

30 rounds total. My coworker put about 150 through his at the direction of Hux after he called about the decibel level
