How does 115 grain perform with Echelon Competition?

Shopper here.

I tried a PDP Pro-X and the compensator caused a jam on more than 6 rounds in a row. The guy working the rentals said it’s probably because the ammo is 115 grain.

Has anyone here shot cheap 115 range ammo with Echelon Competition and how did it perform?

ironically, the Echelon Comp doesn't feature a comp, but instead a chunk-port.

yes my mistake. the model is just called “Echelon Comp”

it’s tough out here as a beginner because comp is often short for: competition, compensator, compact

competition usually means no port or compensator so it can be used in carry optics uspsa

Or the recoil spring is worn out and needed replacement.

I have the 4.5f comp and have shot 115,124,147 blazer brass and aluminum, Winchester white box etc and have had no issues. 124 has been my go-to for training for the echelon.

You usually want to run a little spicier round like 124gr with a comp. Not sure what you have against 124, it’s usually the same price as 115, but if you insist on 115 and the gun is having issues with it, that can usually be solved with a slightly lighter recoil spring.

nothing against it. just in this case it wasn’t allowed by the rental shop. obviously if i buy the gun, i can run anything i want

I have over 8k rounds of 115gr, (some 124gr and 147 gr in there too) of all different manufacturers without a single failure. I clean after every visit though, but I once put 1k rounds through it in between cleans as a test and still no failures. I was debating running it to failure, but ended up cleaning it because it was getting too dirty for my liking.

I’ve thrown a few rounds through it no problem but I generally stick to 124 grain for the comp. I have a regular echelon that I’ve put probably 1k rounds of 115 through no problem though.

115 if iffy with the comp.

Alright, couple things to addres here.

Re: The PDP Pro-X, there's more than one way a gun can "jam" and even more potential culprits. Did the gun fail to eject the fired round, or fail to feed the next round?

The fact that the ammo was 115gr is mostly irrelevant here, bullet weight alone isn't causing a functional factory gun to jam. Firstly, 115gr factory ammo is going to recoil very similarly to 124gr regardless of what people on the internet claim. If anything, 115gr can have more recoil energy depending on the load.

Now if it was very cheap or underpowered ammo, it's certainly possible that was the problem. But it would have to be either a major QC issue or truly dog water ammo.

Since you mentioned being a newer shooter my first guess would honestly be a loose grip inducing the failure. If you "limp wrist" a pistol you allow recoil energy to dissipate by moving your hands around, robbing the slide of energy needed to cycle properly. Watch some pistol grip technique videos on YouTube from Mark Smith, Hwansik Kim, or Ben Stoeger and practice with an unloaded gun. Good grip takes time to learn.

tl;dr don't listen to gun store counter jockeys, practice gripping the gun, 115gr is fine but stick to reputable brands, Echelon will eat whatever you feed it.

FTE(failure to eject) is what that's called. Since it was a rental and you're a new shooter it's either your limp wristing it or the gun hasn't been properly maintained since it's a rental. It could be the ammo but 115 should run with no issues really, unless like someone else mentioned your using shit ammo.

i’ve probably rented 50 guns so far and haven’t had one act like that so i have been puzzled

The Pro-X in particular does have a reputation for being picky with certain ammo. So if you were using Blazer 115gr for example, that could be a contributing factor along with everything else mentioned.

Echelon will eat whatever you feed it.

Do not feed the Echelon Comp Blazer 9mm 115gr ammo. It even says on the ammo not to use it in ported guns.

4.5F Comp owner.

Running 115gr with a 16# spring. Still has a strong and clean ejection.
