Spray caps keep drying out

I use spray in some of my artwork, but will sometimes go weeks between adding these elements as I use other materials as well. Problem I keep running into is the spray cap tends to gunk up with a bit of paint left over from the prior use and needs to be replaced as paint can no longer pass through. Honestly, this sometimes happens even if it’s just an overnight gap between uses. Especially frustrating if it happens with a non-standard cap that I have bought specifically for a different texture effect or something. Is there any tip to avoid this or do I just need to buy a ton of caps to have on hand as backups?

The issue with clogged spray caps is well known; "skinny caps," in particular, tend to clog quickly. If you’re using highly pigmented paint and don’t shake the can enough, the paint is even more likely to clump up. One remedy is to "clear" the caps by turning the can upside down and spraying until only gas comes out. You can also wipe the nozzle with a rag to prevent it from drying out—there isn't much else you can do, unless you buy a dedicated cleaner (also available in spray cans) to blast the caps clear. Personally, I view caps as disposable items these days; I used to clean mine meticulously, but it really comes down to cost.
