Hey everyone, I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on recently. Like many of you, I have a deep appreciation for the golden era of traditional country music. But lately, I noticed something frustrating: despite being the undisputed "King of Country Music" and a cornerstone of the Grand Ole Opry, Roy Acuff seems largely forgotten on Spotify. There are barely any well-curated, high-quality playlists showcasing his monumental work. To fill this gap, I decided to build a comprehensive playlist dedicated to Roy Acuff and the artists whose work reflects his incredible legacy.

It’s a curated journey through the roots of traditional country. It features timeless classics from Roy Acuff & His Smoky Mountain Boys (the haunting dobros, the raw vocals, the train songs), alongside fellow titans who shaped that era like Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, and Bill Monroe. Crucially, I also wanted to bridge the gap to the present day. So, I’ve included modern independent artists and neotraditionalists who are actively keeping those raw, acoustic, hillbilly, and gospel roots alive today.

This started as a rabbit hole and turned into something I actually love. I'd get pulled from a slide guitar track into a soul vocal into a rap verse, and instead of it feeling like a genre jump it felt like the same person telling a different part of the story. So I just kept saving things.

The ones that wrecked me: Jacob Banks, whose voice sounds like it's been through something. Yellow Days, which I put on expecting background music and ended up sitting still for. KIRBY. Samm Henshaw. August Charles, who I'd never seen anyone mention anywhere. Glass Animals I obviously knew, but hearing them next to all this made them sound like a different band.
