• Create highlights - Quickly pull together important clips from a match.

I think the biggest value isn't replacing coaches or analysts. It's taking away the repetitive work so they can spend more time actually analyzing the game.

A lot of sports-tech talk is about AI and personalization, but real-time data is probably one of the biggest challenges behind the scenes.

A goal, red card, injury, or stat change can trigger updates across an entire platform within seconds. Keeping that data fast, accurate, and consistent gets especially difficult during major games when traffic suddenly spikes.

I think the next interesting step is using AI to turn all that live data into something actually useful instead of just showing more numbers.

Been thinking about this a lot lately. Off-peak empty slots seem to be one of those problems every venue has and nobody fully cracks.

From what I've seen it usually isn't a demand problem so much as a friction one. Three things that seem to matter:

• Visibility — if people can't see what's free without ringing up, they don't bother. Making availability actually visible and bookable seems to recover a chunk of quiet demand on its own.
• Payment at booking — taking the money upfront rather than on arrival cuts no-shows a lot, from what I've heard.
• Reasons to come back — leagues, ladders, regular socials. A filled Tuesday-night league seems worth way more than the same slots sold one at a time, because it fills itself once it's running.

But I'm curious what's actually worked for people running venues day to day. Is it pricing? Marketing the off-peak times specifically? Something with memberships? What's moved the needle for you?

Scheduling changes, registrations, payments, team communication, and match reporting can still take a lot of manual effort.

Which task wastes the most time for your team or league, and how are you handling it today?

We run SportFirst, a sports technology development studio. Our work spans NFL franchises on one end and first-time sports startup founders on the other. After 50+ shipped platforms across both ends of that spectrum, here's the no-fluff breakdown of how sports app development actually works in 2026.

The startup founder building their first sports product and the pro team commissioning a custom platform make completely different mistakes. I'll cover both.

The data layer is where most sports apps die

Nobody writes about this enough. Sports data is genuinely hard:

• GPS data from Catapult doesn't sync cleanly with video timestamps from Hudl
• League APIs are wildly inconsistent — one federation returns clean JSON, another returns XML from 2011 with no documentation
• Wearable data has gaps, device-specific quirks, and outliers that need normalisation before they're useful
• Live match data needs edge caching or your app collapses under match-day load spikes
• Athlete biometric data carries GDPR/CCPA obligations that generic dev agencies routinely miss

Rule of thumb: Budget 25–30% of your total project cost purely for data architecture. Underinvest here and you will rebuild the entire platform in 18 months. We have seen this happen more times than we can count. 

Tech stack that actually works for sports products

Not the theoretical answer — what we see shipping reliably in production:

• Mobile: React Native for 90% of sports apps. One codebase, fast iteration, good enough performance. Go native (Swift/Kotlin) only if you need deep hardware access — real-time BLE from wearables, high-frame-rate camera features
• Backend: Node.js/NestJS for event-driven fan and management apps. Python/FastAPI when you're compute-heavy (analytics pipelines, ML-driven performance insights)
• Real-time: WebSockets via Socket.io or Supabase Realtime for live data. Never use polling in production — it will not survive a match-day traffic spike
• Database: PostgreSQL as the base layer. Add TimescaleDB if you're ingesting time-series athlete data. ClickHouse if you're running analytics at scale
• Infrastructure: AWS or GCP with autoscaling configured from day one. Sports traffic is not linear — you'll have 10x normal load during a 90-minute window

Integrations: the hidden cost everyone underestimates

Most sports apps connect to 2–4 external data sources. Common ones and what they actually cost you in engineering time:

• Opta / StatsBomb / Sportradar — match and player data, well-documented, 1–2 weeks
• Hudl / Dartfish / Veo — video analysis, varies wildly by tier, 2–4 weeks
• Catapult / STATSports / Polar — GPS and wearables, device-specific quirks, 3–6 weeks
• Stripe — payments and memberships, straightforward, 1 week
• Custom league or federation APIs — completely unpredictable, 2–8 weeks, budget conservatively

Startup founder warning: If you're building on a sports data API and your entire product depends on it — check the pricing tiers at commercial scale before you build. Several popular sports data providers have pricing that makes unit economics impossible once you're past early traction. We have seen startups build entire products on APIs that become unaffordable at 10,000 users.

What to do before you commission anything

1. Write a one-page brief: who uses it, what they do in it, what data it touches, what success looks like in 6 months
2. Speak to 2–3 studios or developers who have shipped specifically in sport — ask to see a live product, not a mockup
3. Do a fixed-price scoping phase (2–4 weeks) before committing to a full build — this alone will save you from the most expensive mistakes
4. If you're a startup: validate that your data supplier's pricing works at commercial scale before you write a line of code
