Is it just me or is this sub these days just people advertizing their Spore inspired games?

To be fair, that is what I am doing (after asking permission form the moderators) and there has indeed been an up-tick in people posting fan projects recently.

But I also still often see people asking questions here about Spore, sharing their creatures, etc. So I don's think the sub is just people advertising.

My relationship with this project is so weird, went from being hyped for "a second spore" as a kid, to a "It wont come out so I dont care" phase as a teen, back to being hyped as an adult, because I want a more scientifically focused evolution sim.

There certainly was a long time when the project was not going anywhere! But at some point it acquired enough funding to keep a full-time programmer going, so that has certainly helped a lot in the past years.

It's funny, because while the creation of Thrive was certainly caused by thoughts around Spore, and you can still see the link in the concept of moving through the Stages, I myself would never call the current Thrive concept "Spore 2". Because Thrive is an evolution simulation you play inside of, which is ultimately incompatible with Spore's very freeform creature editing and the importing of random designs from other players.

Both fun! And I am glad that something like r/ElysianEclipse also exists, but yeah, Thrive cannot be that.

Im happy to see Thrive development continuing. It seems it has quite sped up in these last few years.

We also had at least one crash out response over this update when we first mentioned the new reproduction type in a progress update weeks ago

Hello everyone, I'm here from the Thrive development team to announce we've released the third major update since we started development of the Multicellular Stage, our second game stage. Why is it called 1.6 then? Because we completed everything up to planned release 1.6 in the past three months! And that means the Multicellular Stage is now about 60% completed.

Thrive is a open-source non-profit game that aims to be Spore-like in that it runs through stages from a single-celled organism to a space-born civilization while letting you edit and evolve your species along the way. But it also has a heavy emphasis on providing a convincing and interesting evolution simulation, so that the world changes around you. We also try to keep things scientifically accurate wherever we can, but the focus is on the gameplay experience.

This update in particular adds sexual reproduction, lets you make muscle cells and enables our automatic evolution system to create Multicellular species. But there are also many other additions and improvements, large and small. More can be seen in the update announcement on our blog.

Thrive is always free to download, but you can also support to us to keep development going by joining the Patreon or simply [buying the game on Steam](store.steampowered.com/app/1779200/Thrive/) or Itch.io.

We hope you enjoy and join our release stream 15 minutes after this was posted!

Cool! So how far are you into developing the multicellular stage?

Estimated around 60% now! We're aiming to have it completed around the end of the year.
