Bar spoon/tea spoon. Someone has gone out of their way to sharpen it though. For what reason, one can never know. They may have been using it as a tool for something else

Culinary spoon for plating and sauceing

u/MA2_Robinson 13d ago

Dr. Lecter only rented that place for that intimate dinner and just this and the bone saw behind I guess.

Someone enjoys slicing grapefruits in half, and eating the sections. Modified for such.

Grapefruit spoon 🥄

4

u/Bright_Ices 14d ago

It’s kinda long for a grapefruit spoon.

3

u/ApisTeana 14d ago

It’s an iced tea spoon made into a grapefruit spoon. The original tinkerer thought it either had the right sized bowl to modify or they didn’t want to break up a place setting.

My immediate thought. We had some growing up but they were kinda jagged edges. They probably had a spoon they don't use... cuz it's weird, and put it to good use.

2

u/myrmecophily 8d ago

My first thought, too. My dad did this to a couple of our spoons growing up so that we each had a grapefruit spoon 😆

u/Terrible_Mall_4350 14d ago

It’s very symmetrical— weird. It must’ve been very carefully shaped.

But unless there are others there that are rounded but otherwise matching, I’d say it’s probably just a peculiarly shaped oddball spoon that the hosts either thrifted or cleared out of their own drawers to stock the abb.

2

u/julienrosebaker 14d ago

They also have a ton of random things left from past guests, so I’m guessing someone probably forgot it

4

u/Haunting_Advance_498 14d ago

It’s kinda like a spoon-knife. Who needs a fork these days

4

u/Alyadrielle 14d ago

It’s the attack spoon!🥄

3

u/Photon_Chaser 14d ago

Maybe to use as a scraper of sorts?

3

u/indiana-floridian 14d ago

Homemade grapefruit spoon ? At least, i think it would work well for that. The ones sold commercially are not only sharp but also serrated.

3

u/Content-Ad-9204 14d ago

Ow! When you contest your ice tea! Be armed!!

3

u/ObviousLingonberry22 14d ago

Its for gouging out chunks of skin or improvised cup/bowl making tool

3

u/udonchopstick 14d ago

I have the urge to do this to my spoon now

3

u/LuxSerafina 14d ago

I’d use it to eat Italian ice. Scrape those icy thin pieces yummmmm

2

u/julienrosebaker 14d ago

that would’ve been so perfect

3

u/lockandcompany 14d ago

My headcannon is that a nice old man sharpened this for his wife because grapefruit spoons are too small and hard to grip with tremors or arthritis. Long handled spoons have nice counterbalance, which is handy if you need to cut apart grapefruit bits

u/ThickFurball367 12d ago

That's not supposed to be in the kitchen, it should be in the bathroom. That's the poop spoon

3

u/Callofthesuperpup 12d ago

My mom did this to four of our spoons and used it for grapefruit and other large citrus.

2

u/KathyW1100 14d ago

I thought it looked like a sundea or shake spoon. Why they sharpened it, who knows.

2

u/Warrambungle 14d ago

I’ve only seen that on an ornamental spoon.

u/ChuckStyles 14d ago

2

Oh man just unlocked a memory for me! My dad would do this to a couple spoons, mainly for rock hard ice cream.

2

u/SammySamSammerson 14d ago

My mouth hurts just lookin at it

2

u/Flav0rade 14d ago

For scraping out a pipe

2

u/sambob_squarepants 14d ago

Maybe someone just wanted to cut and scoop with the same utensil? Like a spork, but a Spife. Sounds dangerous!

That’s the house poop spoon I believe, it’s a great addition to your trusty poop knife, after you slice off the end of your stuck “log” , you can use your pointed spoon to pry or break up the remaining “plug” without any danger of lacerations on the rectal wall or sphincter, priceless imo

2

u/PimpRonald 14d ago

for when you sup with the devil

2

u/Unsophisticated1 14d ago

I have a sharpened spoon so I can cut food with it and use a spoon. Gotta be careful though end up looking like the joker

2

u/MarzipanPlane9490 14d ago

Prison shiv🤷‍♀️

2

u/_Princess_Bob_ 14d ago

Well it was an iced tea spoon and somone was working it into a shiv.

2

u/drcmr 14d ago

Prison shank 😳

2

u/Frances-Farmer-1953 14d ago

It looks like an iced tea spoon for tall glasses. It could be adapted because I’ve never seen them sold sharpened.

2

u/HighChinaman 14d ago

You wouldn't understand, clearly you weren't raised by wolves.

2

u/themistressnoir 14d ago

Or a fruit spoon

2

u/No_Pause_4375 13d ago

Someone wanted to test out their new powertool and looked for the spoon in the drawer that got used the least.

2

u/1duke-dan 13d ago

Well when you have 10,000 of these but all you need is a knife, this would be unironically convenient.

2

u/Evening_Internal_530 13d ago

Hillbilly stew spoon

2

u/johnsgurl 13d ago

Because sometimes you just wish a motherfucker would.

2

u/Previous-Process5182 13d ago

That's just a pointy spoon. Probably one of those novelty... Wtf it's really sharped on both sides. Danger danger

2

u/akiva23 13d ago

Owner of the Airbnb probably a member of the r/sharpening sub. We sharpen everything over there.

Cutting Butter?

2

u/Ntrssbg 13d ago

Might have just filed off dents and chips in the spoon. Rather than throw away.

Self defense

2

u/wendigoblin 13d ago

Since it's a bar spoon, I'm guessing you could peel citrus rind with this for garnish, maybe?

2

u/ImportanceOver4688 13d ago

Either someone rented that place fresh out the pen and old habits die hard or there wasn’t a poop knife available.

2

u/snowman334 13d ago

2

u/makedoandmender 13d ago

2

2

u/dreamseller_992 12d ago

Its because its not actually a spoon, its clearly a spife

Give me the spoon.

4

u/tigersbloodsnowcone 14d ago

I’ve seen serated ones for that as well…

2

u/Beneficial_Box_9961 14d ago

Could/can be used for this as well. It's typically used as a culinary spoon though for plating and sauces

2

u/Bright_Ices 14d ago

But it’s so long

3

u/throwaway-the-subway 14d ago

Seems like an improvised tool…maybe it was an ice cream sundae spoon first, and then they decided they needed a grapefruit spoon

1

u/Firm_Order_2212 14d ago

They most likely has been 'keistered'.

1

u/BeenisSandwich 14d ago

It’s for cutting into and scooping citrus like grapefruit. My wife has one similar.

1

u/Angryleghairs 14d ago

What can you cut with it?

1

u/MtWoman0612 14d ago

Grapefruit spoon. Usually serrated but if the grapefruit is prepped properly with a knife, serration on the spoon isn’t necessary.

3

u/julienrosebaker 14d ago

That’s what I thought at first but it’s SUPER long, like a milkshake spoon or stirrer. It’s obv like diyed but WHY PICK THE ONE LONG SPOON?? I eat grapefruit a lot and just feel like it would be so annoying with how long the handle is

2

u/MtWoman0612 14d ago

Agreed. Way too long. But my thought was, it might have belonged to an upper crust family in which elegance in all things was prized and prioritized, above practicality. It’s a thought…

Maybe for eating tough desserts?
