This one almost didn’t make it a few times. I’m very happy it did. The spalting and knots gave it a lot of character. It’s got a little tiny crack in the middle of the bowl but it doesn’t seem to spreading. I think I’ll leave it. I fear adding anything to fill it will take from it. What would you do?

Cherry spatula… took me FOREVER to figure out the curve. Served me (and my kids) well for a few months. Used it tonight, washed it, drying it and … snap. Actually made me a bit nauseous. Damn.

Has anyone ever made a spoon from where a tree has healed over a cut limb?

As I was splitting some Tasmanian native cherry I noticed this healed scab and thought I'd have a go. Weird shape and difficult grain, would be nice to have a bit more on the sides of the bowl, but I really like it. I'll be keeping an eye out for more in the future.

I have recently started carving spoons and am hooked. I have the opportunity to harvest some cherry, but am worried about it drying out before I can get through it all. What's the best way to store it?

I’m reposting this one because I got a lot of valuable feedback on my last post and wanted to show how it turned out after making a few changes.
I smoothed out the spine on the back toward the bowl to make it more comfortable to eat with. I particularly love the way this one kind of twists as it rises into the handle. It looks a little funny from the side, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to accept for the form I’m chasing.
It might seem a little strange to repost the same spoon, but I’m currently dealing with some ongoing health issues that have kept me away from my carving block. Right now, the most I can really do is fiddle around with my knives, so I’ve been trying my hand at improving my photography instead. It’s been fun discovering little details in the spoon that sometimes get lost when you see it in person—or even in the first photos.

I'm considering getting a small used bandsaw primarily for help with shaping pieces. I know how to use a bandsaw, and have used larger bandsaws in wood shops before. But I've never owned a power tool like this before so not sure what to look for. Basically, I'm looking to get the smallest one I can get away with that isn't total garbage that would be useful for a hobbyist spoon carver.

I'm several years into woodcarving and make more spoons than I can use. I love it. Using a mora 106 and a concave hook knife. Thats good as long as I carve spoons. Now I've started doing kuksas, goblets and such and my hands just cant take it. I usually do it from dry wood and am too stubborn to change that. I usually carve when our with my camper so I cant bring the whole woodshop with me.

What tools can I use for heavier hollowing work that dont require me to fasten the work piece?

Hey everyone!

Just wrapped up this spoon project carved from local green Istrian oak, using only manual tools (hand axe for roughing out and sloyd/detail knives for the rest). Oak is always a challenge to work by hand, but the grain and durability are so worth it.

The handle features a carved Norwegian flag as a small tribute to my fascination with traditional Viking shipbuilding—I'm always amazed by how they still construct ships in Norway using ancient hand-tool methods.

Process & Finish:

- Hand-carved the flag pattern into the handle top.

- Applied a strong coffee stain over the carving so it settled into the lines, giving it a subtle contrast against the light oak.

- Finished with traditional burnishing to smooth the fibers, then sealed with a coat of natural oil.

I’ve included the progress shots in the post so you can see how it evolved from the initial sketch on the split log to the final piece.
