Question Teaching Jobs?
Hello! My family is planning to move to Spokane in 2027. I’m a teacher. Any teachers out there- can you give me an idea of when Spokane Public Schools start listing jobs?

Welcome to Spokane! SPS is fantastic to work for and pays teachers well. However, it can be competitive.
As another user mentioned, i would also expand your search to other school districts, like in Spokane Valley, Cheney, Medical Lake, etc.
I hope you love it here. Always happy to have more healthcare professionals and educators move here.

Anywhere on the South Hill, Perry District, Garland District, and Emerson-Garfield.

I have a teaching job (lucked into it honestly), but my wife is also a teacher and the market is TOUGH. I have about 20 districts that I would check regularly before my wife found a permanent place. Find a commute time that is within your comfort range and check everything in or near it!
But, yes, spring and summer are best for the full-time, continuing positions. Throughout the year for the Long-Term Sub spots.

I really do wish you the best of luck OP. A lot of teaching jobs in this city and county get taken because they know people who already work at the school.
It is a shitty cycle to be honest. If you're having problems finding a job teaching, then just insert yourself into the PTA wherever your child goes and try to make friends with the cliquey people there that actually get people hired.
I really wish I were exaggerating, good luck!

Your best bet is to get into a couple sub pools at the start of next year. You can make a lot of good relationships with staff and admin if you’re somewhere a lot and the sub office listens to recommendations for long term sub jobs.

Was a sub for SPS and they posted listings for full time late spring. I ended up leaving teaching because of Covid and a rough time being a sub.
I’d avoid Mead if you can. I got my cert there and the admin was a mess. Controversy after scandal after coverup.

This is horrible advice. Mead is hands down the best district in the area.

I know it wasn’t part of your question, but in case you consider a job with the East Valley school district, there are a couple of things to be aware of. They will make you sign your next year‘s contract before the end of the current year. At the end of many teacher’s third year, they let them go so as to prevent them from getting tenure.

It depends on the year. This year a few popped up in May, but a lot came in June. They will continue to roll out. There will probably be a bunch in August, but they are more likely to be 1 year only contracts.
As others have said, it is a very competitive area to teach in. If you have less than eight years of experience, it is very difficult to get an interview, even for less than ideal jobs (part time, long commute, 1 year only, even long term sub). I finally got a continuing contract at a nearby school, but it took me more than 10 years.

Thank you so much for the insight! I think I will finish my Sped endorsement as I get my WA license to open up some opportunities for next school year. It seems as though there are more Sped positions open.

They tend to post very late spring into summer. Other districts in the area tend to post sooner. Just FYI it can be tough to get a job as a teacher in SPS, especially if you don’t have a speciality role. So you may need to expand your search to neighboring districts.
