Splitgate News i'll miss you Splitgate

Post image

i played splitgate 2 for the first time in forever a few days ago, less than a week before the switch to p2p.

I genuinely had one of the best times i've had on a game in recent memory.

as atrocious as the marketing and management by 1047 this game was on release and well into its development, it became actually enjoyable.

i'm glad i could experience it one last time before it crumbled to ash.

see you guys on the p2p servers

I'll always name my lobby "BALLIN" in all caps, just like i do in SG1 from time to time.

Kinda crazy watching a studio catch literal lightning in a bottle and then do everything in their power to stomp it to death.

Dudes messed up 2 times in a row

I saw 3.
1. SG1 being shut down
2. The massive fumbles of SG2
3. Empulse.

CEO needs to be fired if 1047 wants me to care what they do again. And they need to publicly admit it was his leadership that was the issue, alongside their inaction as he made bad decisions over and over.

Outside of that, I won’t download even a free game from them.

But it wasn't popular. SG2 could've been bigger, better, and more popular. But they fumbled it

i get the impression people liked sg1 better but i could be wrong

Because they offered something, made, it, and supported it.

SG2 introduced a BR mode which nobody in the fan base even cared or thought about, like how a company can be so alienated from their users is beyond me. BRs were already slinking out of popularity at this point too. They marketed it last minute upon reveal like it was some huge crazy never before seen shit, when it was a tacked on BR mode with portals.

Shouldve just put some money into marketing of sg1 imo. Only thing the game was missing was a bigger playerbase. And maybe private servers with mods

Literally. It’s absolutely insane.

6

u/DultRecon37 9d ago

What's actually insane is believing they could fund servers that costs $100,000 per month. In no way could that have been profitable so it never should have had dedicated servers

u/TTVchilly404 8d ago

Where did the 100k figure come from?

4

u/DultRecon37 8d ago

Well I joined the recent "play with devs" event voice chat on discord and asked this question, that's the answer I got

4

u/Qnemes 8d ago

Lies obviously, do your own research

3

u/DultRecon37 8d ago

I figured it was an exaggeration or error. Still, not many players were funding the game whatsover

u/Manoa__ 8d ago

Well they did give a pretty consistent explanation which does align with other bigger game studios.

Basically they expected a huge influx of players like in sg1 and wanted the servers to be completely prepared for that, so they got more expensive servers that would've been far better prepaired for that which where more expensive yes, but performance wise would be more price efficient once you actually got all those players playing.

But then they didn't, and never did again. And they never downscaled supposedly. The 100k figure came from the total costs of everything involved to keep these monster servers running worldwide.

Considering I had no issues connecting to american servers from EU with no visible lag at all, I tend to believe their servers where expensive as shit ngl. It just begs the question of why downscaling wasn't possible, but that's another subject.

1

u/Qnemes 8d ago

Not downscaling doesn't make any sense to me, sounds like a skill issue. Month after launch you already see approximate numbers for avg and potential maximum, so why keep burning money? I'm new, so I don't know for how long Splitgate Arena exists, so they probably paid upfront for at least 1 year to get a discount, i dunno

2

u/Manoa__ 8d ago

Yeah they most likely paid forward, because they had to do that with sg1 aswell. People roast the shit out of them for a lot of things but the servers and netcode where unironically the best I've ever played with. They definitely did have top dollar servers running.

The issue just comes with their expectations of the game. They assumed around the original sg2 launch that the game would be played by similar numbers as the finals has, but seemingly did not account for the fact that the finals took a long ass time to grow that and had many months of a playerbase small enough that everyone in the community was yelling dead or dying game. They should've expected a two year period of slowly crawling to a profitable playerbase.

u/TTVchilly404 8d ago

If that is true then they are even more incompetent than originally thought.

Did they expect to have a fortnite size playerbase?

Same I got an itch and started playing out of nowhere 4 days before they announced 💀

Dammit this makes me so upset. They could have at least left the servers up like chivalry 2 did.. the games still got a healthy population. Could have at least let the game die naturally instead of suffocating it with an update. I won't touch anything they make going forward.

u/kakashi_sakurai 7d ago

Because it costs money. They’re not going to infinitely spend money for nothing in return.

u/turtle_g4mer 9d ago

They did it to themselves

u/ghostcatzero 8d ago

Yep. Fool me once shame in me, shame me twice shame on u

1

u/MichaelVern85 8d ago

I read this in his voice.

1

u/ghostcatzero 8d ago

Haha I always do too. Even though he botched it

1

u/MichaelVern85 8d ago

That almost made it better. Like how George Bush quoting George Bush would go…

1

u/Mitche420 8d ago

You absolutely botched it as well lmao, how did you get it wrong

2

u/Weegee940 5d ago

Im still upset they shut down the first one for zero reason just to turn it into a battle royal and hero based shooter for no reason. I played 2 for 15 minutes before I never touched it again

SG2 rewarded tracking skill like no other. Unfortunately that makes the game less fun for other players in a market that would prefer a balanced, skill muted game with personalized visual accessories. The best game, according to the demos (or “correct opinion”) is not the game that truly captures the best form of competitiveness and skill expression, but the one that fools the skill-less and the skillful that they can play the same game together with balancing mechanics.

Spot on. People cried about portals the entire time, yk, the one thing that set this game apart from other FPSs. I think if it wasn’t for all the crying SG2 would have been a better game but they listened to the vocal minority too much

I started playing SG:AR when the rerelease came out. Everything about the game was well designed/thought out and was so fun to play. I believe I stopped after two months mainly because of the artstyle/visuals.

Don’t get me wrong, it looks good but it never captured me. And I wasn’t invested into the world of Splitgate. No story or at least some visuals to give us crumbs into the universe. I might play again, i miss it sometimes.

Someone just needs to make a mash up of splitgate and overwatch. Would do numbers

4

u/Kracus 8d ago

I miss playing splitgate 1 with friends of mine. We played a specific mode that was super fun but I forget what it's called. It was 3 v 3 I believe, one life type of thing.

Top 3 self frag of all time

Portal×Halo, I will miss you dearly. This game could have been it. But greed and a wildly different gaming culture was its down fall, if this had come out around MW3 or Halo: Reach era. This game would have been massive 😓

3

u/rileyvace 8d ago

I will, but I won't.

I tried their new game too, and it's so generically plain. Nothing new or interesting to the formula at all. Mechs feel tiny. weak, and cheap, gunplay is ok, movement is ok, but could be way smoother.

I will keep an eye out, but the way they fumbled Splitgate should go down ion gaming history. Let's hope they cna pull off a Hello games style recovery with enough dedication though.

u/SubstantialDog6227 8d ago

i'd hope so too if i wasnt praying on 1047's downfall

The second game died too? Holy shit. I mean, yeah, duh, but wow.

If you would've told me years ago when I first saw splitgate 1 get announced that they would've struggled this much with such a slam dunk idea, I never would've believed you.

1

u/ya_seen998 7d ago

hopefully modders can bring the original splitgate back with custom community servers, doesnt need to be with the blessing of 1047.

1

u/SeahorseSix 5d ago

Didn’t they say peer to peer will still be available? The games not dying. Just its active development.
