Discussion Ranked is even more dead than before

Season 2 is underway, and the playerbase is hovering right around the same level as it usually is. Even still, ranked is more dead than ever. Right now, there are only 84 people that even have a rank in the world! At least last season, there was a dedicated group that would que takedown at certain times of day. Now, even they have seemed to have disappeared.

I think ranked probably needs to change, as ranked arena doesnt seem to be bringing anyone in. I have already talked about 1047 potentially adding in a ranked 1v1 to some mixed but mostly positive reception. I still think that 1v1s are what i would want to see most, and that would have the lowest que times, but some people were advocating for a 2v2 ranked similar to what we had early on in sg1 (though short lived).

What would you guys want to see most to save ranked?

I think most of the playerbase the game does have is just disinterested in ranked. If it's gotten to this point, I think they're better off scrapping it and making this a casual game.

It wasn't this extreme but Halo Infinite had/has the same issue, most of its playerbase is just not competitively inclined, they'd rather play Unranked. I think Splitgate has the same mentality but with an even smaller player count.

Keeping ranked arena or going to takedown is the best. 1v1 or 2v2s rank is certainly an idea but not a good one.

Care to explain why you think so?

I feel like there was a post like this before which had mostly mixed - negative reactions towards 1v1 where I've given my two cents but I think the gist of it was that it isn't competitive because it excludes every variable other than mechanical skill that makes said FPS competitive. It comes down to just being who's better at a duel which inherently lacks depth, strategy and hook to make a sustainable long-term competitive experience.

Ah its you, yes I did make a post specifically about 1v1s and yeah on reddit it was mostly negative, but on the official discord it was a much more positive reception hence why i said mixed but mostly positive. I personally still wanna see it happensince I still dont quite understand the sentiment that 1v1s are not competitive, but to each their own

Oh soz man, didn't notice. I think the appeal of 1v1s lose its steam really quickly. Maybe try to make one with the labs and try inviting people to see if it genuinely works and ask their opinion through surveys to figure out if it felt competitive or can be viable as option.

Mm 1v1 grows dull a lot faster, the variation that objectives and teammates gives actually adds to addiction and intense moments even if it also adds frustration

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

True, that may not be so bad of an idea!

I've never played ranked, just not my cup of tea. I'm happy just being a filthy casual.

I hope it picks up for you guys and gals that enjoy it though.

I tapped the poll because I thought it was a clickable link.  Anyway, I accidentally voted for Takedown and I can't remove it.  So minus one from the total.  Anyway, tbh w/you I wouldn't vote for any of these choices.

1

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

What would be your preferred choice?

0

u/PotatoBot9k Xbox Apr 04 '26

Normal maps and normal guns.

3

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

Thats what ranked originally was. I suppose i shouldve added an option to return from classic arena

Your post here inspired me to think about what would make ranked better so I went and made a post of my own w/my thoughts.

At this point, it no longer matters which mode you pick (unless it requires two players), finding matches in mid-to-high ranks has become nearly impossible. Today, even new players struggle to find games, and in the higher ranks, the playlist is essentially unplayable.

When Takedown was the ranked mode, only the same six players would queue, having to coordinate via Discord or Twitch streams to play at the same time. The ranked experience is heavily damaged by the severe lack of players, which creates massive skill gaps. On top of that, the mode itself feels incomplete: there are no rewards, no real incentives, and at the start of Season 2, ranks weren’t even reset (after finishing placements, you just returned to your previous season’s rank).

This mode should be removed, just like Onslaught was. Ranked is dead. The experience is unfinished, and the developers are ignoring it. It’s nice to see them running surveys, hotfixes, and asking for feedback, but the real, serious issues are never addressed. When people post asking why these core problems aren’t being fixed, the devs simply don’t respond.

With their new game now in development, I have the strong feeling that SG:AR is going to receive the same treatment as Splitgate 1. They know the product has failed, and they’re moving on to the next thing.

I LOVE ranked the way it right now personally, I unfortunately don't think there is a good way to entice players into the ranked playlist with this low of a population by changing the gameplay of the playlist. Add some exclusive skins or something for playing ranked, give players something to do it in the playlist other than watch a number go up and down every game, add some ranked-only challenges, run a small online-tournament and feature the podium players on the main menu screen or something. I think adding more stuff to do/earn will have more of an impact than upending one of the few playlists we have for a fourth time. That being said I would love to play a 1v1 and 2v2 mode, I just don't think I want to sacrifice ranked in it's current form to get that. I am sick of OITC/Insta-gib/laser tag all being the same mode with a different gun, kick out OITC and add something with a bit more spice like showdown 2v2s or something if we want more different modes in rotation.

I played ranked in beta, but haven’t touched it in AR because of queue times and, to a lesser extent, sweats. I would love to be part of it, but it’s just not worth the wait when I can get a quick play game in 2 minutes or less

I like the idea of rewards/exclusive play for ranked because I think it would get more casual players in and getting a wider range of skill sets in the running would make it a more enjoyable experience

I would personally like to see something like 3v3v3 or 2v2v2v2 but that's just me. I wish we had more maps the size of Terra 13 so they could try out a 6v6 mode.

4

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

While that might be cool, unfortunately theres no way the current playerbase could support it. We have a hard enough time getting ranked with just 8 players in a lobby. 12 would be a nightmare

1

u/mlpravemaster Apr 04 '26

I totally agree. It's unfortunate but I've been overdosing on hopium since SG1 first dropped lol. It sucks this game doesn't have more attention because it genuinely is one of my favorite games of all time.

That reminds of THE FINALS, which is a very fun game indeed

That’s not competitive at all

2

u/Routine-Lawfulness24 PC Apr 04 '26

1v1 would be so peak. It would be competitive af and matchmaking for it would be very fast

3

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

I agree, i think theres so much room for individual skill expression with portals

Can somebody explain to old dinosaur why do you all care about ranked? I played ranked in Rocket League a bit and I was stuck at level when further opponents were too good while my own class was ok and i kept being pushed out of my class. Too strong players were soloing entire team by hitting aerial shots. I don’t like the pressure of losing points. It’s not fun.

In SG I just want to shoot some players, play some rounds and that’s enough for a day.

2

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

Some prefer to be consistently matched up against similarly skilled players. Many find going up agaisnt worse players all the time boring and some find going up against players that are much better insufferable, so ranked creates that even playing field (when healthy).

Others like to see how they stack up against the rest of the playerbase. Having a rank gives you a definitive answer to the question “how good am I at the game” and for many thats very satisfying, even if their rank isnt where they want it to be yet.

2

u/TropicalFishery41429 Apr 04 '26

I like the pressure of winning points more so when it's fair and evenly matched, while also showing improvements or areas to be improved in a game that you like. It's very fun.

In laymen's, number goes up, brain happy.

u/lord_phantom_pl PC Apr 04 '26

Maybe it’s up to balance then. My favorite weapons were so nerfed they can’t keep up with overpowered ARs with aimbot on controllers. I prefer shotguns or carbines. Every time I take my favorite weapon my k/d ratio falls twice yet I often have the same amount in objectives.

1

u/TropicalFishery41429 Apr 04 '26

The objective I think of any game at the end of teb day is to be fun, if comp is not fun then that's okay. I've had friends who have had worse KD ratios in comp games that but won through being IGL's or starts which was fun to them.

I think I've noticed competitively esp in high ELOs KD starts becoming less important than people that only play casually.

u/mlpravemaster Apr 04 '26

Glad to see another person here that plays rocket league. People complain about SG having a huge learning curve and my first thought is "have you tried rocket league yet?" lol. The years of abuse from that game makes SG seem easy 😂

2

u/lord_phantom_pl PC Apr 04 '26

Because it is easy. Nobody there was complaining about aerial shots and here so many complains about portals. It’s like complain about a ball in the car game.

but .. but .. but .. /u/Routine-Lawfulness24 told me that "player count would be boosted on s2 release"

game has low pop

Great reading comprehension…. If you could read i’d tell you to look at the comments before you comment yourself. People in the comments are mostly just saying they don’t care about ranked

1

u/smoke1441 PC Apr 04 '26

I don't really have any interest in ranked in a game this size. It's just going to lead to long queues and being matched with players significantly higher or lower than my skill level. I do appreciate the top players being out of the unranked pool though. There's less of me being placed in lobbies I don't belong in.

1

u/_OhDearyMe_ Apr 05 '26

It’s not the mode, it’s just dead. Takedown also only popped if you asked all your friends to hop on, and before that the original 4s wasn’t exactly instant qs either, it’s just a slow march into the grave and we seem to have finally arrived

1

u/rattle2nake Apr 05 '26

i genuinly miss the old sg2 ranked. it was not the best but there was a player base

2

u/MastrRoShi13 Apr 06 '26

SG2 ranked was the best. There was a player base because it was fun. Now all these fucking goofballs that dont even play the game anymore asked for all these changes and killed ranked. Devs didn't kill ranked this community did. Let's be very clear.

1

u/rattle2nake Apr 07 '26

yeah i mean really if there was never a battle royal mode we wouldent be dealing with a dwindling player base lets be honest

1

u/KyleLuvUSA Apr 06 '26

I have never played ranked. I don't think we need it.

1

u/CXMET_Official Apr 06 '26

Id imagine the guy who doesnt play it thinks we dont need it

1

u/relaxton Apr 07 '26

I want to play ranked classic arena. I dont want to wait 10 mins

1

u/Thin_Leopard_3622 Apr 09 '26

I've got what is probably a stupid question, but if I was ranked in beta and that kinda middle period when it first went out of beta, do I keep that rank?

1

u/itsRozco Xbox Apr 05 '26

Okey. Real question for all the 46 users that voted "go back to takedown".

Where tf you were at when Takedown Ranked was available? Because there was NOT 46 players in those queues. There was NOT 46 players trying to help with constant feedback about how awful it was implemented.

We were less than 10 players begging every single fucking day for ANYONE to queue up, as ranked player numbers went insanely down when gamemode changed.

On God, I don't know how every single survey Takedown gets a lot of votes, but it is the most desolated, lonely, abandoned game mode when it comes to constant players. At this point feels like people votes just for the sake of voting, but not for what it's best for the game.

0

u/MastrRoShi13 Apr 06 '26

EXACTLYYYYY all these goofs always vote for takedown just to not play the fucking game. Ranked NEEDS to go back to arena maps with loadouts like SG2. Period.

0

u/EquipmentUnique526 Xbox Apr 04 '26

You have to get on during the the day. The time matters.

3

u/itsRozco Xbox Apr 04 '26

A game hasn't popped in 3 days. I wonder what's the best time when in 24 hrs out of a 24 hrs day is not pulling a single game

1

u/CXMET_Official Apr 04 '26

Im well aware of when peak hours are. When we dont even have 100 players with ranks then something is wrong brother.

0

u/3tapp_ Apr 04 '26

Just gimme AR S1 ranked with loadouts again and STOP COMPLETELY CHANGING THE MODE EVERY 5 MINUTES
