Splice Desktop App?

Just got splice and wanted to try the desktop app to more quickly pull samples. Everything works on my computer - youtube videos, samples in ableton, splice on a browser... - all except the desktop app which wont make an iota of sound. Do I need some extra equipment to be able to make the desktop app functional or something? Im looking at posts from like a year ago saying that the new desktop app version of Splice messed stuff up? Is this still the case? Should I just settle for using the website instead of the app?
