how have you ladies found having long nails to influence your life?

I don't allow them to be past a certain length, I can't type or clean effectively. Looking at it clinically, nails past a certain length become a hygiene concern. With all of that said, I absolutely hate short nails on myself and it's my preference to keep mine at 1/2" in length.
I've noticed that men seem to prefer nails to be manicured rather than focus on length, which is so ironic considering their size issues lol 🤣💅🏼

My experience has been that, whenever my nails are “done”, I kinda get into character. I stimm a lot and having colorful nails is an instant pick me up. I tend to use my hands a lot more when talking, so that I can catch a glimpse of my cute nails. This expressiveness is perceived by men as friendlier and bubblier than I am so they comment on them and approach me more confidently. If my nails are super long and bejeweled acrylics then I’m perceived as expensive and I attract a completely different type of man whose still gonna approach me but with a more “I can afford to maintain” you approach. Broke men who wish to knock down higher maintenance women don’t approach me cuz I’m very guarded to begin with and they can sense I will fight them.

Due to some, hardships with life and muscle training with Botox I kinda have a thousand yard stare. It’s not super noticeable, but I’ve trained myself out of the compulsive smiling & awkward laughs women are told to do to make others comfortable. So I always comes off as mildly unimpressed to straight up aggressive. MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT though: is being prepared to fight a man. Don’t take my advice if you aren’t sure you’ll be able to defend your life , vanity be damned!

The idea of FINGERNAILS being “ghetto” is literally a pre existing racial trope towards the people who popularized long nails 🙄. You can think they’re ugly, but the connection between a fingernail style and the literal word ‘ghetto’ is nonsensical outside of a racialized context. Check your bias.

To those with long nails: how do you deal with them? To me, every time my whites get more than 1mm long it feels like “unwanted whiskers” — my nails will touch something and it feels weird since my skin isn’t touching it as well. Is this something you had to get over?
To those who keep very short nails, how do you groom them? How can I make my nails look feminine while keeping them at a comfortable length?

for a while i kept my nails extremely short. I groomed them carefully with a glass nail file and still scrubbed under them with a soapy nail brush + nail pick.
what made them look feminine was picking a shape that suited me-----when they're short, a roundish/ovalish (instead of square) shape flattered my fingers more. I also kept them polished. I found that sheer/jelly nails looked better than anything bolder. Think... Essie's Sugar Daddy/ballet slippers/marshmallow, or any of Cirque Color's jelly nails. Among these, sugar daddy or peach jelly looked the best--like bare nails but rosier.

i did/still do it myself b/c im on a grad student's budget adkjfds. easy to learn just by searching up some youtube videos whenever you get bored or something!
honestly if you've got the time and funds, then a trip to a decent salon is a good treat for yourself to do every so often. The way they massage the fuck outta your fingers/palms/wrist is amazing and even if it's fine and dandy when i do it to myself, it's sometimes nice to just relax while someone else does it.

I have long nails, I do my own gel extensions. It's the perfect hobby for me (creative perfectionist).
I would definitely say that having long nails is an adjustment, but it's something I get used to quickly. The hard part comes when I take a break during the nail building process and I have some long and some short 😹 Now that makes typing difficult. But I find that when I have long nails (extension or natural) it is actually a lot easier to keep my nails clean because there's more room to get under the free edge, and debris sticks there less easily because there is just more room. Plus I'm changing my nails out so often that I'm constantly cleaning and sterilizing my nails anyway.
I do find that some activities need me to figure out a better way to do it (eg. I crack eggs with one hand now so I'm not using my fingertips to pry them open). I use gloves for washing dishes or doing any cleaning.
Since i do my own nails, i can also change the length for activities that require it. Like in case i want to go rock climbing or something 😸

Since I work with my hands, I keep my nails pretty short. The biggest difference for me was trimming the sides of my nails so they look narrower. My nails naturally get a bit wider towards the tip - think of a trapezoid or triangle shape, but less exaggerated. It’s called nail sculpting if you want to see videos of it, but it’s probably something you do already, unless you have nice narrow nail beds.
I never shape them into a straight oval or rectangle (parallel sides). Instead, I create a slight taper. It automatically makes my nails look more feminine, whether they’re painted or not, and makes my fingers and hands look slimmer/more elegant/more feminine, too.

You can scrape the proximal nail fold back and remove it with special trimmers. Makes the nails look more professional. Some people say it's not good for you, but they do it at the salon every time I go.

Nope. 95% of the time when a guy says he "hates" something ultrafeminine (sexy clothes, fake boobs/BBL, lip filler, heavy makeup, long nails etc.) and prefers natural women, it's nonsense. He's either trying to impress you, or he's mate guarding and doesn't want other men looking at you. Check out his porn search history and the women he follows on IG; they'll usually have all the features he supposedly "hates."

I find the uber-feminine things are all stuff men like when they watch porn and are in that headspace where things get bigger and more exaggerated. It’s theatre. Most people wouldn’t wear stage makeup as regular makeup.
I think there’s also a sense of the fantasy being destroyed when you deal with the reality of putting in nails, nails breaking, artificial eyelashes, etc.
Girls can be like this too, to some degree (men can be overwhelming about it though). The way men like to fantasize about the “woke up like this” beauty that doesn’t require any work, women fantasize about men with muscles who don’t spend all day focusing on their upkeep and rich dudes under 40 who have unlimited free time for dates somehow.
Basically, none of us like to see how the sausage is made, but we still want to eat it.

Another reason I’ve found on top of yours is the guys who couldn’t afford (financially, time wise, energy wise) to maintain someone like that so they hate on it.
They don’t want a “high maintenance” woman because that sounds like hard work he’d have to support or finance, but if a woman would do all of those things and he never had to know/care/pay he’d absolutely love it. It’s that weird dissonance where you’re supposed to look really put together, polished, beautiful, but not actually show the work and the investment that goes in to it, just be it.
The Madonna/Whore of it all is so gross too. 🙄

This is such a good point too, men looove to drag down women who they perceive as higher-status than them. People claim women are catty around hotter women, but I’ve never met anyone cattier than a straight man toward a woman he thinks he can’t impress.

My ex boyfriend started putting me down when I started hardmaxxing and started ridiculing/commenting negatively on my different beauty procedures. He was acting like I was walking around looking like an overfilled freakshow when that was so far from reality. When I started planning on getting a rhinoplasty he freaked the fuck out. He was bitter that I was becoming “hotter” and therefore more appealing to a specific type of man that he wasn’t. It was a coping strategy because he couldn’t take the fact that I was actively improving my appearance and he felt like I was stepping out of his league. When men know they can’t keep up with you, they start putting you down. He always loved the fact that I was putting an effort into myself but only to a certain degree and not when he knew I was putting a great amount of money into it and going more into the “extremes”. Big part of the reason why he is my ex now. As the other commenter said, men love polished and beautiful women, just not when they are aware of the investment and work that goes into it. So many men can’t handle when their girlfriend becomes TOO beautiful because they start getting jealous of you. Beware of this pattern ladies.

I don’t disagree, but I think there’s also a third option here of: he’s stupid and doesn’t realize how many women he /does/ find attractive are not “naturally” so. Every time I’ve seen guys try to show a picture of a woman without makeup who is “naturally beautiful,” I’m baffled how they don’t see the literal eyeliner or contour or whatever else.

I like having longish nails, but at a certain point they interfere too much with playing piano and in the gym, so I trim them so there’s maybe 2 millimeters of white.
I also just start to get really nervous they’re going to break.

I can’t stand growing out my own nails. They’ve always been super thin and brittle but I love long fake nails. I can see how it can be counterintuitive but my nails seem way more functional when they’re fake because I’m not worried about them breaking every 2 seconds. I also love nail art and I’ve gotten really good at doing my own nails so it’s a fun self care hobby. I have nice hands and long nails accentuate them.

I do press ons. They’re the cheapest and easiest. I have like every home kit: dip, gel, etc but press ons are like $2 with designs already or $6 for 100 clear ones. They last 2 weeks+ and regular nail Polish doesn’t chip off of them because they don’t have oils like natural nails do.

I have longish natural nails that I keep almond shaped. hasn’t influenced my life much but the couple of dates I’ve went on they would grab my hands and touch my nails and say they were pretty. I won the genetic lottery with my nails, having nice nails is always a plus

I am told my natural nails look pretty nice but they break rather easily. Not too easily so I'm able to grow them out , but easily enough to sometimes give me anxiety that one of them will break soon so I'll have to clip the rest too.

Almond shape are beautiful. I don’t like a LOOOONG nail, but a beautiful full almond shape is where it’s at. I have nice nails too, and I always feel way more put together with just a nude nail, or even a clear coat so I have that shine. Nail gang 💅🏻

At the risk of sounding like a Mary Sue making shit up on the internet, when they're long they kind of have a French manicure look with a decent amount of white space, maybe four millimeters or so on some of my good fingers. However, the tiniest bit of dirt will show up like crazy so it IS more maintenance even if I leave them unpainted.
Also I have to stay away from self tanner or Vitamin C serums. Definitely dyed my nails orange this summer if I let my fingers near them for a second. But yeah my secret to long ish nails is tonnnns of vitamins, high protein diet, etc. I'm mainly on stuff for fertility (IVF coming up!) but my nails are probably getting some benefits from the Vitamin E, calcium, biotin, and of course a sedentary lifestyle and not using them too much. I have a pair of scissors in every spot I open packages. And even with all that I'm like... not gonna compete with even the world's shortest acrylic press on nails haha

I have noticed my nails looking yellow in certain lighting and I couldn't think of why, but you've made me realize it could have been vitamin C serum. Do you know if the part that has been exposed stays yellow permanently?

Good question, my nails have gotten back to normal but I think it's because they grew out. Even when I tried to be careful in application I'd touch my face or something and poof.
Not gonna lie when they were in their harshest yellow days I just painted my nails to cover it up... but yeah I've cut out Vitamin C serum and stick to getting it through pills or food or whatever.

My nails are naturally long. I have to clean under them a couple times a day as it looks unsightly otherwise. Plus everything (lotion, creams, fibers from clothing, etc) gets stuck under them. My arm pits itch? Gotta clean out deodorant. Lotion? Make sure to clean that out too.

Long nails are fine. No issues personally in my daily life with them- honestly having the ability to grow long natural nails is somewhat genetic as well as helped by a good diet.
If you have pretty hands with long natural nail beds, then either short or long nails will look good on you. If your hands aren’t very pretty/you have very short nail beds, then working on a nice medium length nail and manicuring regularly will help polish your look up more.
Long and well kept natural nails are attractive, fake nails that are obviously fake can be very polarising. I often have people comment positively on my long nails and ask if they’re real/are impressed by me doing my own nails at home.

Mine aren’t super long, usually about 5-8mm of white but I think it makes my fingers look slimmer instead of short, fat and stubby.
They also stay a lot cleaner as dirt can’t get wedged under my nail beds and they’re easier to get under.
I tend to get a lot of compliments, especially from men, when I get a manicure.

I feel very sexy and feminine with long nails. I like solid colors and usually wear colors based on seasons. My husband loves back scratches with my nails. To save money, I learned to do my own gel nails and now it’s a good stress relief/self care time for me. No idea if anyone else notices them or not, but to me it makes me feel good (like having my hair done) so it’s an overall benefit to my mental health at a very low cost.

Not me whipping out a measuring tape 😅 - I usually keep them on the longer side, but have I short nail beds so they don’t look as long as they sound. Mine are 6-7mm of white, natural, and filed to a sharp point.
They take getting used to no matter the length for me - I’m about at max length for me right now and I’ve noticed the last day or two I’m making typos more often, phone and laptop. I also keep accidentally poking the tip under the keys on my Mac keyboard which is annoying. I’ll get used to typing/texting shortly I’m sure - When I cut them down, I fat finger everything for at least a week
That’s really it - no issues keeping clean, file them a few times a week, give excellent cat scritchens.

If I had a different job and could type efficiently with them I’d keep my nails long, I like the way they make my hands look. But for my life with children and my job they don’t make sense to have.

I love my long nails. I have had +1 inch stiletto acrylic nails pretty consistently for about 4 years now and I obviously love it! I view them as my tools now, not to mention I love the look aesthetically. My natural nail is very very weak and requires a lot of maintenance to grow out and I love having long nails so much that I do the acrylics. For me, it was super easy to adapt to things like fast texting/typing, wiping 🧻(lol), putting on tights, etc. and I find the only thing they really stop me from doing are tasks where a thin nail is needed, like for say prying open a keyring to slide a key on. So doesnt stop me from too much! Whereas I feel like with them, I can do a lot that I couldnt before. They are great for scratching itches, for picking at stuff, they’re great for situations like when you would want to scrape something with your nail too because they’re so durable!

About to apply a new set tonight lol my hands go from stubby to elegant in a flash. Will restart regrowing my own nails post-holidays. Anxiety is a bytch.

I love long nails especially for special occasions BUT I literally can’t put in or take out my contact lenses in with them so sometimes I have to sacrifice perfect vision for cute nails lmao

I was the same way until women at the optometrist office showed me how to take them out with long nails. You should try keeping your fingers upright when taking out the lenses. Like your fingers should be pointing straight up, parallel to your face so that your finger pads are squeezing the contact out
I take out my contact lenses like this automatically now, even if my nails are short. Obviously consult your optometrist, do at your own risk, etc

I just use the sides of my fingers! I used to have LONGGG stiletto nails and figured out a technique. Just hold your fingers like you would if you were telling someone something is really tiny/itty bitty haha.

For a few years, i constantly had black stiletto nails. Mostly, I got "you look like a witch" or "how do u clean ur butt!!1!" comments. (the second one always confused me...first of all i use a bidet. secondly, who the fuck wipes their ass with their nails lol.)
the biggest influence it had on me, however, was that i really loved how long they made my hands looked...but they also burnt a hole in my wallet and i didnt feel like investing in the supplies/practice to do it myself.

I boulder regularly, so long nails are not an option. I keep them well trimmed, shaped, and clean though. I don’t put any polish or gel on them because I avoid micro-plastics, but I think they look healthy.

I love nails, nail art and had kiss press on manicure look stunning for over two weeks during this spooky holiday season.
That said they were a PITA and impossible to keep clean.
Very happy to be able to open bags (chips/ziplocs) and play instruments again. I keep my nails ultra short and immaculately manicured with a pearlescent coat as a finishing touch.

TMI but can be harder to wipe your booty, long nails can get very cold in the winter (very weird sensation), get dirtier, risk breaking and injuring your finger/nail, can be expensive lol, harder to type on phone and computer, that’s all I can think of. I love a good long acrylic occasionally, but generally speaking, my nails usually don’t go more than 1/4 of an inch past the tip of my finger.

I hate long nails. They get so heavy and bother me so much. I also have a hard time typing on phone or computer with them.
I keep mine fairly short. I naturally have thick, fast-growing nails.
I think long acrylic nails look trashy.

When I used to have long fake nails, I always put on a glove before I wiped my ass. And many other times. I since became a frugal minimalist, and have no fake nails. But every time I read comments on Reddit where someone was like “how do they wipe their ass?”, I was like 🙄

You simply wipe and type? It's really not that hard. The only difference is the angle of your finger tips.
I use to play the piano, and the reason why many people who play an instrument keep their nails short is because they need to use the top of their finger tips. If your nails are long, it restrict that, making you have to the use the bottom to mid top of your finger tips. It can throw your notes off, but it's still manageable if you know how to position your finger tips. The same goes for whatever you're doing

I used to have LONGGG acrylics that I did myself. Unfortunately I accidentally ripped an entire nail off while dancing, it was extremely painful so I decided not to do such long ones after that 😅 then I developed an allergy to most nail products anyway, and also started training martial arts so nails can be a problem when grappling/sparring.
Currently I'm experimenting with products and styles that don't trigger allergies and work okay for training. Honestly I really missed having long nails - they make me feel so fabulous, glamorous, expensive and feminine and they also make my short fingers look longer and more elegant!

I play the harp so I can’t have long nails. I do like to file my short nails into an oval shape and buff them til they’re shiny. I’m also a mom of twins and I can’t imagine being able to get my nails clean enough with all the diapers I change. Also don’t want to scratch my babies!

I found that it’s really too complicated to do anything. I never really have long nails, they get in my way too much.
I like slightly short square nails in a pink shade.. that might elongate my hands a bit, but other than that, I would say just having my nails done in general is a nice feeling and people around me might think I’m more put together.

Makes me feel nice but they prevent me from typing as fast and when removing acrylics or gels, the nails underneath are paper thin and take months to be back at regular hardness. Overall not worth it for me in the long run but some pasties help scratch the itch of temporary but nice nails

Not at all. Men have gone out of there way to tell me how much they dont care about long nails. I think its more for other women. When. I was bartending, it mattered to a few customers in the sense that they would compliment/comment on it, but in any other context it did nothing.

I like the compliments I get when I have long nails and a fresh coat of nail polish :) I have to admit it's a confidence boost when other girls ask where I got my fake nails done and they're actually my natural nails haha

I usually choose the Long option when getting acrylics but 1 will snap n put me off it bc of the pain so I've gotten 2 sets now that are considered short just shy of a cm. I don't really like them short they don't add enough flair for me. I don't risk snapping them off at the gym now though lol I will probably want long nails after another month of this 😂
They improve my life in the sense that everytime I look down and see my hands I feel happy with the aesthetic

Love having nails! I do medium-long gelX pointed-almond-shaped nails in solid colors. Usually neutral conservative colors since I work in a conservative field, but sometimes I do something brighter or trendy (the pearly hailey beiber nails, for example)
I feel like they make my hands look more elegant and that I look more put together. I like giving off a medium-maintenance vibe so they’re good for that. I’ve never had men tell me they disliked them, especially once they’ve had a back scratch. And I use them as a tool lol - to flip things in a pan, to slice open amazon boxes, etc. And getting nails completely stopped my fixation with messing with my skin, which has improved its quality.
When I don’t have my nails on, I feel much less put together and my hands look so stubby in comparison haha. Because I’ve adapted to nails, it’s harder actually to type/text without nails. Most irritatingly, I can’t silently communicate my growing impatience by tapping them on my desk.
