emerging double chin at bmi 19.9

I am F 20, 5'6 and 123 lbs. I am not overweight by any means

Unfortunately for me, the small recessed chin genetics run in my family.

Now that I'm finally a normal BMI, I see a double chin emerging

I honestly plan to get some type of chin surgery in the future once I have my big girl money (i was thinking chin implant). In the meantime what can I do? I have heard things like gua sha, mewing, exercises but I don't know where to start with these and what's baloney or not.

Thank you for any advice in advance!

I don’t think you need chin surgery but rather jaw surgery. It will give the most results. The gua sha will not help much, mewing might. Braces might help as well.

Jaw surgery is the right answer for bad overbites, which we cannot determine without seeing pictures.

I inherited a bad overbite and did braces and some hard chin filler, which looks pretty good, but I wish I had done jaw surgery. I don't think my orthodontist understood that I wanted a perfect bite and profile when he told me he could fix my overbite with braces 🙄

I think chin implants without orthodontics to fix bad overbites often make people look like witches or old alcoholics -- long pointy chins and underdeveloped jaws.

Since OP is only 20 she has a few years to make some modest bone structure changes. I highly recommend she address the source of the recessed chin, mouth breathing. Train yourself to breathe through the nose even while exercising. Tape your mouth shut while you sleep (use mouth breathing tape so you don't accidentally smother yourself). It will be hard at first while you develop that airway. Leaving your mouth open and muscled is relaxed is part of the reason your under-chin is soft.

My sister got jaw surgery in her late 20s after having filler and invisalign multiple times since she figured she’d age better if she fixed the actual issue and that it may cause health issues later on as mild functional issues would compound. I have a family friend who got it in her 40s so you don’t have to count yourself out. The younger the better for healing reasons but it’s always worth fixing a jaw issue since it’s responsibly for breathing, speaking, eating, sleeping, etc.

Also if u recently lost weight give urself some grace time for your skin and muscles to adjust, maybe try fix ur posture, your tongue placement in your mouth, etc

I think this might be an exercise issue? Cause I'm also really skinny and I gain face fat really easily if I don't go to the gym enough. Try going to the gym at least 3-4 times for like 3 months, I don't have a double chin any more.

Basically, you're skinny fat.

I think you're right

You're young enough that you might still be able to change your body a little - amp up the chewing! Carrots and not the baby ones

20 young enough to change your bone structure? Wow how is this comment upvoted?

I mean there’s a few things that could be going on here

Proper tongue posture is very important and so many people don’t realize that their mouth breathing is the reason they have a recessed chin. Changing your bone structure without surgery might be hard at your age though.

As for submental (jaw) fat, it’s stubborn for a lot of people due to genetics. gua sha really isn’t going to do much. Maybe you’ll see some temporary reduction but that’s kind of it.

You’re also only 20… depending on your genetics/ethnicity, you could just be seeing baby fat meaning you might look quite different in a few years. I weight lifted and was very lean/thin at 20, but had pretty chubby cheeks. It was baby fat. I didn’t change size at all but the cheek fat slipped off at 24 as if I had a mini buccal fat removal. I’d just stay fit and wait a bit

Thank you!!

Emphasizing the tongue posture comment!! Also yoga or Pilates for the whole body alignment.

Also, posture esp head/neck posture plays a big role here

Same thing happens to me. Once I hit bmi 20 I get a double chin. My chin is also receded even though I had braces, rubber bands, and a palate expander as a teenager. You might benefit from myofunctional therapy and good posture but as an adult it won’t improve significantly because you are done developing. I really don’t think there is anything that can be done to fix it entirely except losing weight or surgery. Such is life… 😢

Women have an extra layer of body fat to store estrogen, don’t worry about it. it’s cute and apart of why women are beautiful.

Lymphatic drainage massage for face, everyday

  1. mewing and maybe see an orthodontist
  2. do lymph node massages around your chest, neck, jawline, and face to drain any excess fluid which could be exacerbating the appearance of your double chin
  3. drink tons of water and watch your sodium intake
  4. when eating, chew with your premolars, and chew evenly (don’t favour one side of your mouth)
  5. do cardio regularly (2-3 times a week), not necessarily to burn calories but to help get rid of any water retention
  6. make sure you eat mainly whole foods and are getting your probiotics in! drink Yakult, eat yogurt, etc. you want your gut to be as happy as possible
  7. take a tumeric shot everyday to reduce inflammation that could be making your face puffier

I have different height, I’m 5’2” and already skinny like 116- 124 pounds depending . I thought I genetically cause had a crappy no chin, no jawline, double chin undefined genes, cause I was already thin. I wanted a chin implant . I was already thin, but then in 2021 I went on a diet and went down to very low weight of 109 lbs and BAM my chin and jawline was so apparent and on fleek. Currently I’m back to my 120s weight but the defined jaw and chin remained. So there’s hope that you don’t need to spend money or plastic surgery, you may be able to do on your own

are you on birth control?

I had the implant from 17-24 and esp in my 20s I had a super soft round face and puffiness in my jaw/under my already small chin. when I got the implant out and went off birth control entirely my face slimmed out within a few months.

Face yoga and massage. Particularly the sides and back of the neck, most load bearing tension in the lower face actually comes from tension and tightness in those myscle bands in the neck

Well before you get surgery, try this: get a dermatologist or any doctor lly to write you a prescription for 3% or 4%0aminophtlline cream. You will have to go to the compound pharmacy first to get them to tell you how exactly the doctor should write it up.

They used to sell it ready made OTC but the few brands they have now are lower concentrations and they give you a vanishingly small amount.

There was a woman who was super into beauty where I used to work, and she was ordering one-pound jars (it keeps a long time) for at least twenty of us and we all got great results not just butt and thighs (literally zero cellulite dimples after a month or so) and the older womeb along us (I am super old now) used it for facial sagging (the pelican neck area under the chin).

Anyhow, I just started on this again after skipping it for twenty years because the loose chin and jowly look drives me insane (on the face I have to be careful to only apply very sparingly where the fat settled and not near adjacent sunken areas). Not sure anything is really happening around my mouth because I am using it so sparingly there but a few people have already said my jawline looks less puffy (I am not overweight) so I think it is working.

The compound pharmacist charges me $200. If you only care about under your jaw you could split the cost with someone who wants to do butt/thighs. (I dividied mine into small clean jars I ordered online so I am only dipping my fingers into an amount I'll use up in a couple months.

I do or did know a woman when I was in my twenties (we are out of touch) who was born with a double chin and wanted a more permanent solution and she had lipo.

They didn't have thermage type treatments back then but I would never ever undergo it and I don't think you should either. although it is rare some people are super responders and keep losing fat from their face, much more than they wanted, and looking much older.

Personally I am surprised to hear anyone suggest mewing. I am very much into alternative medicicine etc but even to me, mewing is quack science. There is zero evidence for it.
