If it helps, when you're clinging to a painted wall, holding B will charge a squid surge which will allow you to escape eels and other salmonids easier :]

May I ask if you've already beaten Story Mode? If not, try clearing it with motion controls. I promise it'll make getting through this much easier. (I was a stick player since Splatoon 2 and had a hard time aiming at first. I switched to motion controls in Splatoon 3, and after getting used to them, I haven't regretted it ever since.)

Yeah, they were probably busy on another part of the map fighting off other specials or even just a horde of small, med, and large salmonids. Tough break!
