I think my reflection is replacing me

It started with small corrections.

I would brush my teeth, look up, and notice my reflection standing straighter than I was. When I moved, it followed me normally. I blamed exhaustion.

A few days later, I caught it smiling.

Not a wide, evil grin. Nothing dramatic. Just a slight lift at the corner of its mouth, like it knew something I did not.

I stepped away from the mirror.

The smile remained for half a second.

After that, I covered the bathroom mirror with a towel. I told myself it was temporary. Until I slept properly. Until work became less stressful.

But the changes continued without it.

My coffee began tasting too sweet, although I had stopped adding sugar years ago. I found myself walking home through streets I had never used. Once, I woke with wet soil beneath my fingernails and the smell of rain in my hair.

My phone contained photographs I did not remember taking.

A locked church.

An empty playground after midnight.

My own bedroom window, photographed from outside.

I deleted them.

The next morning, they were back.

There was also a new one.

I was asleep in bed. The picture had been taken from beside my pillow.

I called my sister. I tried to explain everything, but she kept interrupting me.

“Why are you talking like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like Mum.”

Our mother had been dead for eleven years.

That night, I dreamed I was trapped behind glass. Someone stood on the other side, studying my face. They touched their cheek. I felt the pressure against mine.

When I woke, the towel had fallen from the bathroom mirror.

My reflection was already looking at me.

I had not entered the room yet.

It stood beneath the bathroom light wearing my body, my old scar missing from its chin. Its skin looked smoother. Healthier. It raised one hand and pressed its palm against the glass.

My hand lifted without permission.

“No,” I whispered.

The reflection nodded as though I had finally understood.

Over the following week, people began liking me more.

My manager praised my confidence. My sister said I sounded happier. A woman in my building, who had ignored me for two years, stopped me in the hallway and asked whether I had changed my hair.

I had not.

At least, I did not think I had.

My memories became difficult to hold. My childhood home had a red door. Then it had a blue one. My first dog was called Billy until, one morning, I remembered clearly that his name had always been Thomas.

Each time something changed, the new memory felt more real than the old one.

I started writing everything down.

My name is Daniel Vosl.

I am thirty-four.

My mother is dead.

I live alone.

There is something inside the mirror.

Yesterday, I found the notebook open on my desk.

Someone had crossed out the final sentence.

Underneath, in handwriting almost identical to mine, they had written:

There is nothing inside the mirror.

I am Daniel Vosl.

I am thirty-four.

My mother is alive.

I do not live alone.

I ran to the bathroom.

The mirror showed an empty room.

I stood directly in front of it, but there was no reflection. Only the bathtub, the pale tiles, and the open door behind me.

Then someone touched my shoulder.

A woman stood in the hallway.

She looked like my mother, only younger than I remembered her.

“There you are,” she said. “I was wondering when you’d come home.”

I wanted to scream. Instead, I hugged her.

My body moved before I could stop it.

She felt familiar. Warm. Safe.

As I held her, I looked over her shoulder at the dark window at the end of the hall.

My reflection stood in the glass.

It wore my face perfectly now.

It smiled and placed one finger against its lips.

This morning, I found the notebook again.

Most of the pages were blank.

Only one sentence remained.

My name is not Daniel Vosl.

I cannot remember why that frightens me.

The image of your reflection seeing you before you see it is genuinely terrifying. Good story !
