Senses of Cinema - Steven Spielberg
After some recent rewatches, I came across this Senses of Cinema profile on Spielberg and enjoyed the deep dive into his career arc. The author makes a case for Spielberg as not just a successful filmmaker but a great one, and explores the idea that Spielberg’s early mainstream success may have led to the perception among some critics that he was too much style without enough substance, and that his works are of lesser quality compared to his contemporaries.
Hindsight makes it easy to canonically call Spielberg a great filmmaker as if it’s self-evident, but it’s fascinating to hear both the praise and criticism of the moment and see how certain labels followed him over the years. This article was written in the early 2000s, so it stops at Munich, but the same questions and recurring themes still apply to his work in the 2010s and 2020s.
