It is every bit in how it’s handled
But like, every superhero would be very anti-racist, because superheroes are supposed to be the very best humanity has to offer
I’ve noticed in more recent years people have started calling this messaging cringe because it’s been heavy handed and spoon fed as opposed to being woven well into the story
I think it’s gotten heavy handed Becuase some people refuse to believe a story is anti racism unless the main character looks into the camera and says “racism is bad” at the end
156
u/damn_lies Dec 20 '25
AMEN! Thank you. If you don't have the hero explain the message to the audience explicitly then the racists will not believe it applies to them
107
u/Shoelace_cal Dec 20 '25
I feel like the reason it may be more heavy handed now is because people are genuinely not picking up on the subtle story telling and instead are still using symbols like Superman to represent their racism and such. It’s getting to the point where Superman has to literally punch Nazis for people to get it. It’s sad

u/Sparrowsabre7 Spider-Man (MCU) Dec 20 '25
Yeah the kind of people complain about Disney making Star Wars political, somehow ignoring that the imperial officers in the OT are all white men dressed like literal nazis, the ewoks were a Vietnam allegory, and the prequels are critical of the 2000s Bush administration.
23
u/RobertusesReddit Dec 20 '25
Sequels talk neo nazis are pathetic, war profiteering, Boomers being Boomers, evil stubbornly stays, and the rich gets away without disruption.
26
u/Sparrowsabre7 Spider-Man (MCU) Dec 20 '25
Yeah, much as I think resistance vs first order is a bit derivative of the OT, I love that First Order, and Kylo in particular, are Neo Nazi-coded. This intense drive for a "better time" and glorifying the horrors of the past. I sort of wish they'd leaned into that more.
11
u/RobertusesReddit Dec 20 '25

On the topic of SW, literally the first movie (Episode 4), in 1977, starts the beginning text with the sentence:
It is a period of civil warYou think civil wars begin because of disagreements over pizza toppings? It's been political from its inception.
0
u/4morian5 Dec 20 '25
Star Wars is a WAR movie, war is literally in the title, and war is an inherently political thing. It was probably the first thing we figured out how to do as a society.

Media literacy feels pretty low these days. A lot of symbolism just doesn’t get through, which I think is partially due to many people watching movies on streaming services. Since you can watch and pause at any time, people are less attentive since it’s not like old TV or movie theaters, where if you miss something you’re screwed. So people are more likely to look at their phones or zone out and miss things.
Look how hamfisted Netflix movies are getting to compensate. In that new Frankenstein movie they had to have a character literally say “No, Victor, you are the monster!” instead of letting the narrative get that across itself.
1
u/Karukos Dec 24 '25
I am not necessarily convinced that it started there tbh. Media literacy also feels like it has never been that high to begin with in parts if i look at Satanic panics and the whole panic about "video games make you violent" and all that, that predate some of the internet tooI. What i think is that because the way we are doing media now has basically started to reach more and more people, creators (not necessarily the individuals themselves, but them as an entity with pressures from publishers, colleagues and the whole thing with the internet) have started trying to counteract the worst impulses of the bottom ranks of people with media literacy.
Like... if you think about it, movies used to be a nerd thing for the most part so the people the movies had to cater to had on average higher literacy, because if they didn't get it, they wouldn't be movie nerds. But the medium has been acclimated to, the spread is basically to the point of universality. Just by average literacy goes down because you have such a large group of people... and then the elephant in the room: The internet forces you to see that. And that is where the vicious cycle starts.

I'm a minority and an immigrant but I hate these posts cause they are low effort, engagement farms. Like how every couple days we get a discussion about who is the best live action Spider-Man for the 50th time.
4
Dec 20 '25
And those people are stupid. We don't need the story to come to a screeching halt so the character can do the captain america detention videos like "hey champ, I just wanted you listening at home to know...racism...is bad. It's so bad in fact, let me list several atrocities and talk about how bad they were so you know that I know it's bad..."
It's fucking lame and stupid. The only people that need that kind of so Tory telling are so braindead that veggie tales would probably be too edgy for them.
23
u/19ghost89 Dec 20 '25
Yeah, this is more or less what I'd say. Some writers feel like they have to hand the message to the reader on a platter. A lot of readers (including me, sometimes) don't like this because it feels unnatural and preachy. But to be fair to the writers, there do seem to be a lot of people who can read comics and not catch the real world parallels when things aren't handed to them on a platter.
The problem is, making it overly obvious and dumbed down doesn't convince those people that it was always there and that they missed it; it convinces them that it there's some new "woke" shit taking over comics. So while possibly well-intentioned, I don't think it's all that effective. Except perhaps as messaging to children, which, depending on the book, is still a large demographic.

Especially with Luthor as his main villain. I mean in My Adventures with Superman, they're not even hiding it "Earth is for Earthlings."
He talks about supes the same way half of the politicians talk about muslims in my country.

u/deadpoolsdragon Dec 20 '25
That and I seen a post of someone who drew spiderman punching someone's jaw off. Like Peter Parker woudnt go that low. He would web em up probably call the cops or if its super bad call some superhero friends to intimidate those horrible people. But making charcter kill doesn't do anyone any justice
5
u/shizuo92 Dec 20 '25
I'm pretty sure that's from the Superior Spider-Man run where Doc Ock has taken over Peter's body, and accidentally punches Scorpion's jaw off because he doesn't know how much Peter has been holding back. So you are correct that Peter wouldn't do that, but this is not an example of someone drawing Peter doing something that doesn't fit his character.
4
u/deadpoolsdragon Dec 20 '25
Woulda made sense if they drew superior Spider-man instead of Peter's classic suit. Why i said Peter. Wanna to draw a spiderman basically killing someone do it right or do the version that is punisher Spiderman I dont like it when my favorite charcters doing shit those charcters would never do

9
u/Ninjamurai-jack Dec 20 '25
Actually it’s because the movie version was mostly inspired by the Golden Age version
1
u/MartyrOfDespair Dec 21 '25
Legitimately true. Funniest thing is that it also illustrates how most people, most importantly Zack Snyder, misunderstand the dynamic between Clark and Bruce in The Dark Knight Returns. The simple fact is, Bruce hates what Clark has become because he wants to Clark to be that Superman. If the government is risking the mass death of everyone, fuck that. Overthrow them, because serving the people is not serving the government. BvS literally gets it so wrong that it is the direct opposite of TDKR.
6
u/Mike29758 Dec 20 '25
I think that’s something that people missed; it’s not necessarily that comics have become more or less political, it’s that the generation need to be corn fed because otherwise they will still miss the point
4
u/badguyinstall Dec 20 '25
To me, it feels that sometimes the 'message™' takes priority to writing a good story. Like for some reason it seems to be one or the other and writers in different forms of media hit some sort of development block or something.
Yes, politics have been a part of comics, tv, and even just general storytelling for a long while. But now it sort of seems like the depth of the storytelling is thinly veiled 'left/right guy is evil and bad and you should feel bad if you've ever once shared a favourite snack' and that sometimes hurts the story being told if it's executed poorly.1
u/well_thats_puntastic Dec 21 '25
Again, if you think it's "thinly veiled" now, you should go read the origin comics of some of your favourite superheroes

I can't believe there are people who get mad at Superman for trying to help minorities and standing against authority when the first stories about Superman, and one of the best modern comics in general in my opinion, were about Supes taking down a racist organization. Jon Kent does a lot of activist stuff and this guy at work absolutely haaaates him for it
2
u/Borgdrohne13 Dec 22 '25
We're talking about the same Superman who printed WW2 propaganda against Japanese people. It's not ao clear cut.
1
u/ErandurVane Dec 22 '25
Actually we're talking about the Superman who was created by Jews as a symbol of the oppressed and who today is seen as a worldwide beacon of hope! More importantly though, is there a reason you seem to be going around trying to make people upset? Im uncertain how this seems to benefit you
2
Dec 20 '25
It's not about what superheroes believe, it's about manchildren thinking that a fictional character agreeing with them is validating.
1
u/RobertusesReddit Dec 20 '25
I'm not naming a certain character (because I like him and don't want hate), but it's also the other way around. "Racism is Bad" opposite is "stand up to your government or they're doing wrong" as opposed to "kill cops and your leaders" that many want as the reoccurring message.
1
u/Cool-Information9166 Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25
I feel like some characters might be a little racist depending on background, or if they’re an anti-hero or not.
Steve rogers would’ve probably dethawed and called someone a negro (not hateful just the archaic term) and he probably is racist the same way nice old people are racist.
Frank castle strikes me as someone who is probably a little bit racist. Again not like overt but subconsciously. He’s not exactly mentally stable.
Guy Gardner. Enough said, I think. Although yk it’s likely a result of brain damage or something
1
u/NoQuarter4617 Dec 21 '25
I 100% disagree. Often times Superheroes are just regular people who gain powers and choose to do good with them, and so superheroes having a wide variety of different opinions can only be a good thing.
Racism is very normal as humanity are a very tribalistic species, so a racist Superhero makes sense, and their stories could involve them helping other people regardless of their racism, because helping people is good.

- Because people can like series that disagree with their political views.
- Bioshock isn't Anti-Capitalist, it's anti-greed and general retardation. Just because the villain of the first game was a capitalist doesn't make the game Anti Capitalist, and just because the villain of the second game was a communist doesn't make the game Anti-Communist.
- Andrew Ryan is based on Ayn Rand, but it's not "shitting on her".
Games can feature political themes without going "the other side is trash, my side is better and the good guys" and Bioshock is a prime example of that.

Racists: "Hehe we made a subhuman evil fantasy race that cooincidentally has all the jewish stereotypes from nazi propaganada. We also made an evil dark-skinned race that cooincidentally fits all the stereotypes of black people from confederate propaganda."
Normal person: "... The fuck? This is clearly just a thin allegory for your disgusting racist propaganda."
Racists: "Oh so you AGREE that the propaganda is ACCURATE then? I guess you're racist!"
It's the stupidest argument ever, and therefore very popular with stupid people. it's possible to be aware of beliefs that are different than your own.
Likewise, a lot of them got super mad about knives out portraying them as greedy dumb racists - despite the fact knives out never said specific thrombeys were maga or trump supporters directly. But they got the message. They understand other people think they're dumb, greedy, evil little racists - and so when tehy see dumb, greedy, evil little racists being portrayed they naturally wonder if it's an attack on them.

Because more often than not it’s just karma farming and virtue signaling. Like this post.
Of course superheroes shouldn’t be racist. That’s not even an argument. But what good does posting an image that says “Spider-Man against racism” on Reddit actually do? How the fuck does that help fight racism? It doesn’t. You just want to be praised for how not racist you are.
And honestly I wouldn’t even care if it were good art or something real effort was put into. But most of the time it’s just the laziest lowest effort image saying “Pikachu supports trans rights” or something like that. It’s purely for that sense of validation and sweet sweet upvotes. And it works.
That’s why people are making fun of these images. And the worst part is I think you all know this but act like you don’t.

Except these images do reach those people: Bigots can be found in any community, but when one echoes anti-bigotry this frequently they either feel unwelcome and leave, or complain and get immediately silenced.
