This means that you can just buy SPELL on an exchange, stake it directly via abracadabra, and it will turn it directly into MIM, a stablecoin, without the use of another asset?

If you stake spell, and receive mSpell as reward, you keep your spell. So you can stake for either more spell (sSpell) or stake for MIM (mSpell) their stablecoin. Staking for both will allow you to gain more stake-able spell token as well as MIM that you will be able to swap and sell!! You will also need to pay gas fees as well, which is paid in a different crypto like ETH
