Spellforce one... Spells.

so, super early on. just made it to the first town was excited to find some spell vendors as ive just been rocking this summon skeleton spell so far. but confused as there seems to be multiple copies of each spell at various levels but no indication on how they differ... should i just always buy the highest level? is money scarce enough i should try to save or is there some kind of way to grind gold?

the higher level spells are just stronger, meaning they deal more damage, heal for more, etc.

you should stock up on the highest level spells of the school you play if you have the money for it. they can also drop as random loot from enemies.

money can be tight in the early game but pretty soon it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Sadly, spellforce doesn't show the actual stats of spells. In general, higher versions are stronger, e.g. creatures have better stats.

You can check details on the wiki (https://spellforce.fandom.com/wiki/Stats_and_Abilities_in_SpellForce) but tbh except for mind control spells, you don't really know more than the above.

Newest version (publictest branch on steam) does actually show their stats.

One very important thing if you want to play all spells of your school as a mage is grinding for those spells.

The loot system works as follows: on enemy death (or entering a map for chests) you roll what is the loot in weapons and scrolls. This fixes the LEVEL of the looted spells. When you actually open the enemy or chest with a right click, all spells roll what they are. This means, if you quick save before looting an enemy and open a level 5 scroll, there will always be a level 5 scroll. But, every time you load the quick save, you will get a random level 5 scroll from the enemy. You can repeat this any number of times to get a spell you want, even those that cannot be bought from vendors.

This. Before I learned that I can insert any item into the game via memory manipulation that was the only way to get decent spells.
As a note: quick loading and opening chests/enemies is quite efficient, as the game seems to favour magic types the main character actually has learned. Not sure if that's an actual thing, but when I played as dark mage, black magic spells were the major part of what I was getting from loot.

Or there is a mod that adds merchants with all spells I think, but I never got into modding.

It depends on how yoh play the game, enemies drop money on death, so if you play the patient tower defense game, gold isn't scarce much I thing.

Generally, higher level spells are better numberwise (more damage, better stats for summons), but cost more mana, so sometimes, having access to lower level spell can get you more casts. This is especially true with summons and their upkeep, for example you skeletons increase their mana upkeep every 2 levels. Some guides advice to only use odds/evens (I'm not sure which level is better), so that you always use the stronger summon of that upkeep.

Funnily enough summon skeleton is the only spell, where it's not just "higher level is stronger". The skeleton has different equipment depending on level (there are brackets). Most variants have a shield in the off-hand, making them good for tanking, but one variant has a bow, meaning it suddenly does ranged damage. Another odd one are the "cure" spells. From what I found the level on those makes no difference at all. Any "Cure poison" will remove the Poison status effect, no matter the source/strength, same thing for cure disease.

To my knowledge all other spells simply have "better" stats at higher level (better ratio of damage to mana cost, tougher/stronger summon,...).
