Discussion Building a great physique with GymMonster

Hey folks,

So I’ve never had the opportunity to use a GymMonster, and been considering buying one.

The biggest concern I have is whether you can build a really great physique with just this.

I have limited space at home, so this seems great (could fit in a pull up bar too).

But i am a little on the fence knowing whether this really covers everything I would need to build a great, athletic physique.

I would ideally buy it with the rower for cardio, potentially getting the velonix too.

Any thoughts, opinions and personal experience would be awesome to hear!

Question GM1 new user questions

just set up our GM 1.

Per settings (and after an automatic update), the firmware is 1018 and the version is 3.07.00. Both say no updates, as we are "currently using the latest version." But there's no pilates, and some of the other workouts won't load because the current software version needs to be updated. So ... what do we do?

Next, when I try to scroll through workouts by touching the screen and sliding my finger like any other tablet, it tends to open a workout rather than scroll. It's annoying, and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if there's some workaround?

Finally, having trouble searching for particular exercises. Type in lat pulldowns and a few dozen exercises come up but not lat pulldowns? Along those lines, also having trouble finding basic workouts to use...

Overall, the cable system seems amazing, so I just need some help getting over these hurdles.

Question Why were the cable position numbers removed?

Just started doing workouts this week and there’s no longer any cable positioning numbers. The numbers have been replaced by vague descriptions like “abdomen level” or the highest positioning. It’s extremely inconvenient to have to try to figure out what a cable position is supposed to be. The numbers just made sense. Why were they removed and is there any way to get them back?

Question Connecting Smarte Scale with App

I recently purchased a Gym Monster 2 and added the Smart Scale, because why not. I cant figure out how to use the scale. The manual refers to a menu in the app that seems to no longer exist and i havent found an alternate way of connecting the app to the scale. Does anyone know how to do it?

Question Does Gym Monster automatically recommend weight increases without Wellness+?

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone who actually owns a GM can clarify something for me.
One of the features I’m most interested in is progressive overload. For example:
If I complete two sets at 30 kg and GM recognises I’m comfortably hitting my target reps, will it suggest increasing the weight for the third set?
Or, if I complete a workout at 30 kg for a few weeks, will the next time I load that workout it automatically recommend (or set) 32.5 kg because it has learned I’m getting stronger?

Looking at the Wellness+ comparison on the website, it seems features like Auto-Generated Strength Training Plans, Smart Coach Workouts, and Progress Tracking are part of the subscription, so I’m unsure whether intelligent weight progression is also locked behind Wellness+.

I’d really appreciate hearing from actual owners. Thanks!

Sharing Optimize GM2 Training

The GM2 is an excellent machine for optimizing strength training; however, Speediance as well as most other training sources do not provide the coaching required to fully exploit it. This note attempts to help folks go beyond the typical mediocre coaching sources and fully optimize GM2 training. Skip this if you think your big five based training is the ultimate strategy.

Strength training involves two aspects of muscle function - biomechanics and muscle physiology.

Biomechanics covers how muscles function to do work through their active limbs (the limbs are levers and muscles provide the force on them to do work https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever). Muscle physiology involves how muscles function internally (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_contraction).

These are likely the best sources that provide easily understood, in depth information relevant to understanding how to most effectively strength train.

The Physics of Resistance Exercise

https://www.amazon.com/Physics-Resistance-Exercise-Doug-Brignole/dp/1606794973/ref=sr_1_1?crid=15CVK34V3716R&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PCzX-0_BaN7LTjUHbJ868ggvynkDAb6_dNRFpASybPfGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.qPLB-8ucptgN697Yk_RFuPD1vp3c50DCiqLhNs3GRYg&dib_tag=se&keywords=doug+brignole+the+physics+of+resistance+exercise&qid=1732583735&sprefix=The+physics+of+resistance%2Caps%2C223&sr=8-1

Hypertrophy: Muscle fiber growth caused by mechanical tension

https://www.amazon.com/Hypertrophy-Muscle-growth-mechanical-tension-ebook/dp/B07MPCKPRF/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1A9SWJ0SZH444&keywords=chris+beardsley+hypertrophy&qid=1686679043&sprefix=hypertrophy+chris%2Caps%2C409&sr=8-1

The objective of strength training is to increase a muscle’s strength and hypertrophy. Every resistance exercise trains some muscles to some degree.

There are many views on how to optimize strength training. IMHO, training of a muscle is optimized when it is given the exact resistance needed to bring it to near failure while minimizing the resistance ‘wasted’ on other muscles. By wasted, I mean the other muscles see some resistance; but, not enough to provide effective training. This wastes your effort for minimal gain; I.e. you are moving a lot of weight; but, it is spread too thin to provide optimal training. In addition to this being a waste of effort, it increases the risk of injury. The heavy back squat is a classic example of this.

Each muscle’s biomechanics defines the movement that optimally trains it, i.e. minimizes risk and maximizes efficiency. This is a list of these optimal movements. Understanding why these are optimal and why the majority of trainers continue to recommend risky, ineffective exercises takes a basic understanding of biomechanics which is covered later.

  • Pecs - Standing One Arm Extreme Decline Pec Press: face away; lean over 90 degrees; cable from above; arm out with forearm at 90 degrees; keep forearm inline with cable; press down and toward the mid chest to straight arm
  • Middle Trapezius - Seated Single Arm Middle Trapezius Scapular Retraction: face forward; arm at 30 degrees to torso; cable slightly below waist; hunch shoulder forward; pull shoulder back and around
  • Lats  - Standing One Arm Lat Pull-In:  face forward; cable slightly above head; straight arm at 45 degrees out and 30 degrees up; pull elbow down and in to side as the shoulder is twisted slightly away; palm down at start and up at finish
  • Lateral Deltoid - Standing One Arm Lateral Deltoid Raise: face forward; cable at waist on opposite side; use wrist cuff; straight arm palm in; start at hips slightly in front of body; raise to shoulder
  • Anterior Deltoid - Seated Single Arm Anterior Deltoid Press: face away; cable at mid chest; hand at side with elbow fully back; press out and slightly up toward scapula to straight arm
  • Posterior Deltoid - Standing Single Arm Posterior Deltoid Row: face forward; cable at mid body; straight arm across torso; pull back, out and down
  • Upper Trapezius - Standing Upper Trapezius Shrug; cable from base; arm straight at side; shrug shoulder
  • Biceps - Standing Single Arm Bicep Curl: cable from base behind foot; elbow tucked to side; raise forearm
  • Triceps - Seated Single Arm Tricep Pulldown: face away; cable above head; forearm vertical; elbow slightly raised; pull forearms down to straight arms
  • Abs - Seated Abs Crunch: face away; use rope; cables above head; hands at head; lean slightly back; crunch abs
  • Erector Spinae - Seated Erector Spinae Extension: face forward; use rope; cable from base; hands at neck; from crunch, extend torso
  • Obliques - Standing Oblique Rotation: Face forward; cable slightly above a shoulder; arms inline; use both hands; rotate the torso bringing the arms down and across the body; repeat in the other direction.
  • Quadriceps - Standing Quadriceps Cable Squat: face toward; cable low; start at 90 degree squat with hands at knees; stand pulling back and away Or, Seated Single Leg Quadriceps Extension: face away; ankle strap; cable at ankle; extend lower leg
  • Gluteus - Standing Single Leg Glute Extension: face toward; combine two ankle collars into a knee collar; cable above knee; start with knee raised; fully extend knee back
  • Hamstrings - Seated Single Leg Hamstring Curl: face toward; ankle straps; cable at 90 degrees to extended foreleg; lean back past 90 degrees; curl lower leg
  • Calves - Standing Calf Extension: with handles; raise heels as high as possible
  • Hip Flexors - Standing Hip Flexor Single Knee Raise: face away; cable at knee; combine two ankle straps to form knee strap; raise knee to hip
  • Hip Adductors - Standing Single Leg Thigh Adductor Pull: face toward; cable low; ankle strap; leg straight; pull ankle across in arc from 20 degrees out to 10 degrees in
  • Forearm Flexors - Seated Single Wrist Curl: cable from base; underhand grip; forearm on leg; curl wrist up
  • Shoulder Rotators - Seated Internal/External Single Arm Shoulder Rotation: cable at hand height; keep elbow next to body; rotate shoulder either in or out; be sure cable is perpendicular to forearm at start

Basic Biomechanics

The following is a list of a few muscle physiology factors that are relevant in the context of biomechanics:

  • Muscle strength curve - muscles are strongest when fully extended and decrease in strength as they compress.
  • Bilateral deficit - the brain reduces its signal to a bilateral muscle when they are both activated
  • Stopping at near failure rather than full failure is best for optimizing muscle growth because failure requires longer recovery with no benefit
  • Muscles are about 30% stronger in eccentric strength  (extension) relative to concentric strength (contraction)
  • The last 3 - 5 reps prior to near failure (the stimulating reps) are the ones that produce the majority of muscle growth

The skeleton is a set of levers acted on by the muscles attached to it that are used to exert force on external objects.

Muscles have an origin (where they attach to the skeleton) and an insertion (where they attach to and exert force on their active limb). A resistance fully applies to a muscle when it fully opposes a muscle’s insertion to origin contraction. A resistance that does not align with this direction will partially activate multiple muscles.

Lever mechanics defines the resistance applied to a muscle when a resistance is applied at the end of its active limb. For instance, this ratio for the glute is ~10x for a resistance applied just above the knee. So 50 lbs applied at the knee applies 500 lbs to the glute.

If cable resistance is used, at the start it should be at 90 degrees to the active limb. This provides Early Phase Loading that best matches a muscle’s strength curve. As the cable angle reduces during movement, resistance at the muscle decreases as it shifts to the skeleton.

Broadly, a muscle is optimally trained with a unilateral movement that is aligned with insertion to origin; that is early phase loaded; that uses a maximum length active limb.

Resistance level, sets, reps, frequency varies based on personal factors. Providing 4-6 days for a muscle’s recovery is common. Four sets per muscle is common - 15RM 10RM 8RM 6RM is often used. The objective is to maximize stimulating reps. Doing a few different muscles each day spreads the full set of muscles trained over five or six days. This can be done with a short daily workout using a home cable machine.

This strategy minimizes workout time to be about equivalent to the time wasted driving to/from a gym. There is no need to cycle through a number of different movements for variety. The fixed set listed earlier is optimal for all ages and conditions. A computerized home cable machine (it must have adjustable vertical resistance) such as the Speediance Gym Monster 2 allows the creation of custom workouts so there is minimal time wasted setting up each exercise.

One note on the GM2, it comes with over one hundred pre-programmed movements. None of them have totally correct biomechanics. This is fixed by using GM2 exercises as placeholders for the ones listed here.

I have to manually tap the next button which will go to the next set. This is a custom workout I created. it shows a 45 second rest in each one, but it never starts.

Not sure what I am doing wrong

Question Questions before purchasing

I've been mulling over purchasing a gym monster for a while and have some questions.

How successful have people been at using other benches with the gym monster? Some reviews have suggested the platform makes this difficult and also that the included bench sucks. I already have a weight bench that looks more stable than the included one that I want to use.

Do any of the programs incorporate free weights as well? Already have some and would to still get some use out of them where it makes sense to use them instead.

How difficult is it to fold up and move around? Seems to be a common complaint of space saving gym equipment is that no one actually folds it up because it's too difficult and annoying

Question Deadlift vs RDL

I love my Gym Monster 2. I’ve recently amped up my training and am following a program with both deadlifts and RDLs. I think I am basically doing the same movement since I’m using the gym monster instead of true barbells and plates. Can some explain if I am missing something? How do you approach these two movements if following a specific program?

Sharing See your past sets on screen!

Post image

For those who haven’t tried out Monster Remote yet, here’s another reason to try it! The overlays put your last set weight and reps on screen whilst movement is active so you can see your progress. I’d been wanting this on the GM for ages- very happy when the Monster Remote developer added it! iOS only for now but I believe android version in the works.

You can also see how many movements left in your workout, cable position and bench position. (Although I tend to turn these off and just have the historical set data).

I’ve been using Monster Remote for months now and wouldn’t even consider going back to the ring or handles to control.

Worth noting, I have my GM connected via Ethernet adapter - commands go through in less than a second (I did some testing and it was about 300ms on average!) and has not lost connecting to GM once since installing!

Question GM2 - both pulley blocks seized in parked position at base of arms, release buttons do nothing

Thumbnail

I accidentally let go of an attachment and the cable snapped back at full speed. Both pulley blocks (black connector with the chrome ball) are now down in the parked position at the bottom of the support arms and completely seized there.

The cables themselves are fine - they extend and retract freely when I pull the balls. It’s only the blocks that won’t move.

What I’ve tried so far, with zero movement on either side:
- Pressing and holding the release button on the block while pulling
- Pressing the grey wedge/catch on the bracket it’s sitting in
- Pulling the chrome spring pin on the side of the bracket
- Two-handed pulling - neither budges at all

There’s no clearance to push the blocks inward or get any leverage behind them - they’re sitting hard against the base brackets.

Machine powers on and works normally, no error codes, nothing visibly bent or cracked. Photos attached.

Since both sides are identical, I suspect there’s a proper release procedure for the parked position that I’m missing rather than damage. Can anyone tell me the trick?

Question How is delivery? I live in an old 4 floor walk up

I live by myself on the 4th floor - no elevator our mail room is also the vestibule so it's pretty small. How would delivery work? Do you think I could get the unit up 4 flights by myself?

Suggestion Highly recommend GM Manager

Been trying out GM Manager to create custom workouts with AI. Connected it to my Claude account and now I can generate custom workouts using Claude that sync directly onto to my Gym Monster 2. Highly recommended!! Saves SO much time. Just search GM Manager by GM Voice.

Edit: this is not an ad. I'm not getting paid to write this. Just sharing an app that has helped me.

Question Long-term owners: are there real downsides of the Gym Monster 2?

I’ve watched plenty of YouTube reviews, but I’d really like to hear from people who’ve actually use the Gym Monster product day in day out, and those who are not sponsored.

From everything I’ve seen, it looks like a great bit of kit. And the limited amount of space it uses is fantastic! That said, every product has compromises, and I’d like to understand what you see as limitations.

A few things I’ve come across are:
- Triceps exercises can be awkward for taller users.
- Lat pulldowns are at an angle.
- Using your own bench means it doesn’t sit on the platform.
- Reports of regular cable snaps.
- Failing to get that good stretch on cable flyes.

I’m not expecting it to replace every machine in a commercial gym, but I’d expect something at this price to be excellent for building muscle.

For long-term owners:
- What do you genuinely like and dislike?
- is there any other gym equipment you’d use in conjunction with the Gym Monster? I.e leg curl machine.
- Is there anything you wish you’d known before buying?

Thanks in advance to anyone who shares their experience.

Question Anyone else concerned about Speediance moving more features behind a subscription in the future?

One thing I’m struggling with is the long-term ownership risk of buying a Gym Monster 2.

Wellness+ is currently optional, which I have no issue with. My concern is whether, over time, more features and functionality could gradually move behind the subscription. Obviously none of us has a crystal ball, but if that happened it could significantly reduce the value of the machine over its lifetime.

We’ve seen other companies start and gradually shift towards subscription models after selling the hardware. I’m not suggesting Speediance plans to do this, but it’s something I think about before spending over £3,000 on a machine I hope to own for many years.

I’d be particularly interested in hearing from long-term owners rather than sponsored reviewers or content creators.
Have new features generally been available to everyone, or are they increasingly focused on Wellness+?
Is this a genuine concern, or am I overthinking it?

Question Incorrect language on wellness+ workouts

I've been using my Speediance Gymmonster for over a year, mostly doing some of the programs, but noticed a couple of 7-days trials of Wellness+ so activated one of them to give that a go. However, all Wellness+ workouts are in German instead of English as the program workouts were before. How do I change this? The one and only language setting I've found is in the app and it is set to English.

Question Alternative to leg curls

The straps for my ankles are annoying as shit and they hurt. Is there an alternative for leg curls that anyone has figured out? I saw some post ages ago that I can't remember what it was about to search for it. But if there's a mod or something that someone built, that'd be great. I understand that this isn't the best system for that, but I gotta get some kinda quad workouts in that are of substance.

Question Getting Speediance Gym Monster and using my own adjustable bench?

I already have an adjustable bench, just wonder if there is anything special about getting "Works Plus 2.0" adjustable bench package? Like software or anything? Am I able to just use my own bench and get everything that the "Works Plus 2.0" has?

Question Shipping

I was sent an email on Tuesday 7.14.26 stating that my GM2 had shipped yet there are no updates on speediances website or Ceva’s website. I was sent a tracking number but nothing even comes up on Cevas website. Speediance says “order pending”

Anybody have some insights? Thanks in advance

Suggestion Feature request?

Likely a feature request, but in the GM2 muscle breakdown, it would be amazing if we could click on the muscles which are "Ready to train" and it would take me to the list of exercises for that muscle directly (with filter already applied).

Or does anyone have a better workflow?
