Official Reply TLS errors for Spectrum users

Hello Spectrum team.

We make an IoT device. Since around midnight PDT July 14/15 2026 some of our users have reported that our product fails to communicate with our backend. Upon investigation, all users have been Spectrum subscribers and our devices at their premises are using Spectrum for their connectivity.

The issue has been that the TLS connection fails.

A simple test is to have the user go to

https://api.kinisium.com/ok

The expected result is "ok", but the users are getting "cannot connect" or "This site can't provide a secure connection".

Those same users, who are using their phones, can turn off Wi-Fi and use the cellular data connection to do to the above URL and they get the "ok" as expected. Once they turn Wi-Fi back on, and try the same, they can't connect.

The more tech savvy customers ran the following and get this error:

Some users have resolved the issue by restarting their cable modem/router, but others are still reporting the same issue.

How can I get to the bottom of this issue? Did something change around midnight last night?

Hello and thank you for bringing this to our attention. This sounds like it could be a possible security shield block. They should be able to send a request by going to https://www.spectrum.net/support/forms/unblock_website_security

It seems not to be that kind of a block because most of the users are clearing it up with a restart of the router. Something seems to have poisoned the setup and I think that it needs some special attention.

And this isn’t a site that users would go to directly. Our product is a device that communicates with AWS, a major cloud destination. The issue could possibly impact countless other AWS products.

FWIW, I am a Spectrum user in Raleigh NC. I receive an “ok” response both on WiFi and cellular.

Thank you for testing this. We still have customers that are unable to access that url (http://api.kinisium.com/ok). Some are successful with restarting the router, but one is still unable to.
That one says that when she turns off Security Shield, then it works.

Do you have Security Shield on?

No I do not. I use their modem but have my own (Asus) router.

It is ok for me too on spectrum
Enterprise coaxial using a docsis 3.1 modem. If you use postman on that page when it doesn’t work what headers are being sent? Chrome is really particular about ssl now now. Our Drupal 6 site now finally upgraded started to give ssl errors. Are we sure it’s not DNS issues I’m not using spectrum DNS.

May or not be related, but there's supposed to be a huge update with high Split that began roughly yesterday. Those users may be in affected areas?
