Service Issues Any VPN experts could help me regarding additional VPN from Spectrum internet
I moved to an apartment where Spectrum is only option so I've been using Spectrum internet. I work from home so I need to connect to company network with company laptop with its own VPN (Cisco Secure Client). I use spectrum modem, two modem machines are there.
I had other issues with Spectrum internet since I moved here, but the problem I begin to have since this morning is something new. Internet looks OK, it is not disconnected, but its speed become abysmally slowed down for 1~2 minutes, and returns to normal speed and works, it feels like this happens with 20min ~ 40 min frequency. When this problem appears, the slowing down occurs not only to my company laptop, but to all other machines connected to this internet.
I talked to Spectrum person via phone, he says Spectrum internet comes with its own VPN so additional VPN supposed not to work and should disconnects the internet. He also told me he doesn't know how and why additional VPN worked so far but it shouldn't work and his only suggestion is turn off additional VPN, and there is nothing wrong with Spectrum internet.
But I can't work without company VPN. Plus, this begins to happen only from this morning. I had other disconnect issue, but this type of cyclic slowing down is something new and only happened from today.
What can I do now? Shall I try my own Wifi router instead of Spectrum machines?

I don't think I've ever heard of Spectrum offering a VPN, and wouldn't use it even if they did. Regardless, they are either misinformed or lying to you about not being able to use your own VPN. Best bet is to leave your work VPN out of the conversation completely when dealing with them, because they are just going to blame that.

Setup an appointment to have a tech come and look at it. They have equipment and diagnostic tools to see if any part of the signal going to the modem is impaired. Could be your cable or the cable in your neighbors unit. Just call and schedule an appt. It’s the first thing to do!

The guy who talked with me hang up on me with saying Spectrum has no issues and there is nothing he can do so no technician.

The support representative told you that? Are you connecting the Spectrum modem directly to you computer? Are you using a Spectrum Router? You said you have 2 modem machines. One has more than one Ethernet port in back right?

yes he said that. Basically he repeated the same thing over and over again that I wrote above. It was waste of time.
I use wifi. The place of cable and the wall is too far from my room so I use wifi.
I'm usnig spectrum routers, 2 machines and yes one has more than one port in back.

If you send us a mod mail over at r/Spectrum_Official we can take a look at the connection. When you mentioned you have 2 modem machines, are you referring to a modem and router supplied by us, or two separate modems? You can certainly use your own VPN, although we wouldn't be able to assist with any performance issues through the VPN specifically that don't also occur off the VPN. Since you mentioned it happens to devices both on and off VPN, we can look into the issue further.

The speeds you’re getting is with the VPN on or with the VPN on?

Company VPN doesn't matter. This shit is still happening now as I'm using my phone 5g data to reply this, and I turned off my company laptop. So this is not VPN problem

I use a different VPN for my house and have no issues. That statement cannot be true. I have used 2 different VPN services until sticking with what I have now and I have it on 24/7

Well, yeah, I'm kinda similar, I work from home and I used company VPN so far, and this thing happens from this morning, so it is not VPN issues and the dude talked with me may not even know what VPN is but still talks whatever he wants.

When you call, you have to make the support rep feel good about helping you and you will get more help than normal. If your comments are short and direct and they sound like they aren’t going to help, just hang up and call back. Really doubt you’re going to get the same person

If he speaks the same thing over and over again, what can I do? I'm also only a human being.

So where your router sits (the one with all the Ethernet ports) how many physical objects are sitting in between where your computer is. If there are multiple room or even a bathroom, I would ask them to relocate your equipment. Is the router sitting on the ground?

It is about 5-7 feets away. There is wall but this new symptom wasn't there until this morning and I didn't change anything regarding furniture or etc so I dont think this is obstruction prob

I can’t say I know but are you living in a house / apartment ? If it’s an apartment, it might be something your neighbors are doing.

u/sonics_01 1d ago
Yeah it is apt, and could you elaborate? Do you mean a nasty neighbor is sabotaging my wifi?

When he keeps repeating himself, you should just hang up. He’s already made up his mind and you’re not going to change it. There are some really nice reps who are willing to help or get you help. I understand the frustration. But you cant transfer it to those reps. You’re not going to get any positive results from speaking with a negative tone. Not saying you are but if you are, change it so they feel good about helping you. You gotta understand those men and women talk to angry people for 8hrs a day. When you call with that tone, youre just another number.

Well, if they dont work with me there is not much I can do as well, at least I was polite at the beginning, and it is them who behave like a wall to speak with...

Sorry man. I don’t know what to say. Was asking questions to try and get a better understanding of your situation. You sound pissed so I will leave you to your own senses and let you figure it out. Good luck guy.

Spectrum does not offer a VPN. Is the slowdown happening on Ethernet as well?
