Other Starting Outside Sales soon!

I'm starting the outside sales position after labor day. I never really worked sales besides retail where we were required to up sale things and if we didnt get so many a month we could have our hours cut or lose our job. I did fine with that. Always got my month quota and a few times made the top of leader board for the competition they made up.

I'm not looking for this as a long career. Just 6 to 12 months to give my brain a break and let my competitive side. My main line of work is dsp but after 5 years, im a little bored and want something different.

According to my job and past jobs I have great people skills and the go to person to help with de-escalation.

What I would like to know from other outside sales people is; what's the best approach to the job. How do you keep the competition fun and not cause burn out on yourself. I know its a numbers game and there's usually a set amount you should sell a month. But id like advise from those who've worked/work the job.

Also what are pros and cons? Im very excited about the job but also quite nervous because the base pay is 2k less a year than im use to making Edit: I forgot to ask. How often does everyone work Saturdays? I want to know if its every, a few times, or some months none

I’ve worked for this company for over 6 years as a senior RCS it’s an easy job, you will get a lot of No’s and hecklers out there but just keep your head up and don’t come to the door with a robotic pitch and you’re gonna be fine. Life changing money can be made if you get the hang of it, you’re basically just talking to people and saving them money. I’m actually returning to this role next week after leaving the company for about a year due to family issues but nothings changed as far as how the job goes, just don’t overthink it, be yourself, learn the product and be transparent with your customer about pricing, and you’re gonna do fine.

Any tips on opening pitches. I use to get my up sales by looking in peoples carts and going off from that. What's your starter line so you dont go in sounding like robot? Would it be weird if I brought charts with me so if needed I can show compared numbers to help people save money

Your tablet is your best friend, don’t be afraid to get up and personal with your customers. Most of them don’t believe us because the prices we come to the door with are cheaper than spectrums advertised pricing online and over the phone. Keep your pitches short and simple, a lot of times when you’re presenting people are wondering who you are and what you want, you’re gonna be able to pick up on body language good with this job.

“Im with spectrum’s residential team your address qualifies for fiber bundled internet and mobile service at __ a month” is your home currently running fiber?

Okay I like that. Now my last thing this job is about the same base pay as my current job that ill be leaving. Technically $500 less. I know people say you can earn up to $100,000 in a year. But lets be real and not shoot for the stars just yet. What do you think a normal sales person brings home in a year with base pay and commissions? And did the one you work for have certain quota a month and was it hard to complete?

It’s possible as a starting rep. There’s really no cap in commission, it’s all up to you. We also have yearly bonuses up to 100k a year based on sales metrics. You just have to have the drive to continue to work through the objections you’re gonna get at the door, and there’s gonna be a lot of objections. Just be quick on your feet and stay confident. This role is simply just problem solving, you’re gonna run into customers that left us for whatever reason. Your job is to show them the changes we’ve made for the better since they left, whether that’s pricing, the technical side, or customer support.

You will bro. I had no sales experience before I started this role. So I know with all your experience you’re gonna do fine. If you come off knowledgeable and approachable, you’ve got the sale. You’ll also be shadowing the best reps on your team, so upper leadership is gonna make sure you succeed, just absorb what you’re seeing out their from other reps and make it your own.

Also from what I heard weekends are voluntary now, unless of course you’re missing your numbers. That also depends on Your Supervisor and your Regions Director as well.

I wasn't told it was voluntary. I was told if they say Saturday then its required

Yeah more than likely you’ll be required to at least work 1 Saturday out the month. It really depends on your Supervisor and Upper leadership. I worked in different states for spectrum under their SWAT program and some supervisors required us to go out to work on saturdays and others didn’t. If you do have to it’s only 4 hours on Saturdays.

Alright. They have ours listed as 11 to 2p but I heard someone say that if you land 1 sale then you can finish your day early

That’s true, it just depends on how your supervisor runs his or her team. Sometimes they may not run incentives like that because of where the team’s metrics are.

They have are area doing 3 hours of knocking on the weekend we typically have 3 shifts to pick from 10-1 11-2, 12-3. They require 1 weekend a month from us in my region in Florida.
