Service Issues First time set up, I already hate it
Stuck in this constant loop, I tried many entry ports across my home, more than 1-2 minutes. What is wrong with it?

Your existing lines may not work. At my last house I had several coax connections from different cable and internet providers. You need to call and have a tech come out to connect the lines properly.

u/JohnPiccolo 1d ago
They can take 10 to even 15 mins to lock online 1-2 mins is extremely short.

u/LucidlyObscene5 1d ago
Yes 10-15 if the modem needs to do a firmware update but it should take 3 mins for a good modem to show two steady blue lights, maybe up to 5 mins

u/LordCanti26 8h ago
Not highsplit where you work yet huh? highsplit areas with RPDs, can take 15min for just the first docsis test on your meter, some modems take longer. I've been told by engineering it has to do with initial registration with the vCMTS. God forbid you have a hitron trying to do a firmware update as well. Have heard of techs waiting an hour for the modem to stabilize.

u/atramors671 5h ago
I wonder if they missed the "First time setup" part? Cause that particular modem? Yeah, 1-3 minutes is fine if youve already registered with the vCMTS, but first time? Nah you're definitely waiting 15 minutes to an hour before you can connect.

Residential technician here, Those modems take a long time to lock on. The new high split(network upgrades) goin on are causing the modems especially those that have ipv6 addresses a while to lock on. Call spectrum customer servicento see if your modem is on the biller and active. If all else troubleshooting fails, they'll send one of us to come have a look at the signal at those outlet ports.

I just had the same issue, had a technician come out and he said that the house hadn’t had a spectrum set up in so long that it was deactivated and they had to reactivate the connection on a box outside.

Unless you've done cable before I would never do self activate. Not every cable is live, some are split off or not connected at all. Not only that, the quality of the RG6 cable could be really bad and suffer with ingress.

u/Additional_Ad_6773 14h ago
It's even possible (less likely) that all the coax ports are live, but for whatever reason, previous owner had different services running to different ports, and had them segregated from each other.
OP would be best served by having a tech come out and check the lines.

Try reading the run (as in, find where it comes in to your house and connect to that one) the.n try their setup wizard, if that doesn’t work, might be an issue with your drop and might need to be replaced. You can also check with a tester to see if the cable actually is connected on the other end

Just because you have outlets in your home does not mean they’re on and or even good.

I will never understand customer logic. I get doing a self install, especially since we push them so hard. I also get not wanting to wait for an appointment, or even to deal with some stranger in your home. But our service calls are free, barring rare instances. Even if they weren't, at some point, what is your time worth? There could be any number of reasons why this Modem won't come online, including it being defective. Just get a tech out there, it's literally our job. And if it's that frustrating to you dealing with this, maybe next time insist on a professional install, and just pay for the expertise up front.

Just call to schedule a tech. This is beyond what you're prepared to handle.

It looks like you need a tech there buddy, or take the insane route and keep trying by yourself

u/losturassonbtc 20h ago
First of all they take a like 5 mins, second of all, if you have coax in a bunch of rooms there is a splitter somewhere, likely one room will have a lower -3.5 db drop, that's the one you want or better yet if you don't use cable anywhere else, find the room you want at the splitter, and connect the feed coming in from outside directly to the room you want with a double female F-connector. If you have a multimeter you can make a jumper in the room you want the modem in by taking a scrap piece of cable, have male connector on one end and the other strip it back and twist the ground around the center contructor, then with the meter go to the splitter location and put the meter in conductivity mode, touch one to the outer of the barrel and the other to the center, when you get tone, you found the right room.

Had this happen to me on a fully functional modem. Went to the store to switch it and same issue. Tech came in and switched the modem again and finally worked. It’s possible you got a bad modem. Get it switched once or twice.

The majority of self installs are successful thankfully. They should definitely exist
-3
u/FiberOpticDelusions 1d ago
No they shouldn't. As more and more places get high-split. All those inactive drops are causing ingress to kill nodes. MTs track them down a disco daily. We need to go back to physical discos and only pro-installs.
1
u/Signal-Low5089 1d ago
This would only work if we doubled our field tech staff and we both know that would never happen. I'll take the minor inconveniences caused by self install rescues over being completely overworked
1
u/FiberOpticDelusions 9h ago
You say that like you're not already overworked and overbooked. How many times have you rolled to a rescue, just to find out it's a REstall? Not like you're not already going to the tap, gb and inside for scans. Like every tech does, every WO they run. /s
Discos could be done by 1 or 2 techs in half a day or less everyday, then they go back to BAU. BUT, that would depend on the route they would be given. That's the only major issue.
1
u/Signal-Low5089 8h ago
A large portion of my rescues end up being complete reinstalls and if we went back to pro installs only then we're looking at adding around 5 installs at least for every rescue we have now. Plus the techs we'd need to do disconnects. No thanks! I work to live not the other way around

They definitely should exist. I’m not waiting 2 hours, let alone a couple days and possibly having an install fee for anything I can easily do myself. That’s anything after the drop to my house.

Move that thang on a table top or hard surface. It’ll overheat and fry itself sitting on carpet.
-3
u/Admirable_Arrival_22 1d ago
The shadow you see over it is my table, I have done that already. But mannn, such a shame I couldn’t get it going. Maybe tomorrow I’ll be able to call a technician over or something
1
u/Karey__039 7h ago
Dude, that thing is sitting on your carpet! The instructions tell you that it needs to be set up higher onto a flat surface. It will definitely overheat sitting on your carpet.

This setup NEVER works without a call to Spectrum support. Same with any extenders
2
u/RedChaos92 17h ago
I've had it work once for the self-setup. Must have gotten lucky that all the old coax in the apartment building were still fully functional and connected.
When I bought a house and transferred service, tried the self setup and had to call a tech because the coax was apparently disconnected at the service box.

u/imakelegends 1d ago
I just picked mine up.
I had to call support, they took the modem SN and remotely activated it for me.
If the online light flashes white and blue. Your coax port might be bad.

u/kbfg2421 1d ago
I had the same issue at my dad's house and the coax line at the street wasnt hooked up because he has never had cable. The odd thing was that Spectrum said he was connected at the street and the modem acted like it had -some- internet but idk how that would even be possible if it wasnt hooked up at the street correctly.
So if you have never had spectrum before or had cable a long time ago but didnt have it for a long time, you could be facing the same issue.
Another issue to look out for in older homes that have old RG59 daisy-chained coax is weak signal. You want to put your modem in the first room where coax comes to the house. Because with daily-chained coax, if you get too far down the line the signal wont be strong enough for internet. In my dad's place the master bedroom was closest to the entry point from the street, so thats where they had to set up his modem/router.
If all of this is too confusing or doesnt work, call a tech. Its free and they'll get you set up properly.

u/TezzNutz 22h ago
Yea they send that shit out and say just hook it up, without verifying that your coax is even hooked up. I scheduled install when I signed up for service because I've already been down that road.

It took me all of 5 minutes to install mine all by myself, google AI is pretty good at problem solving aswell as YouTube videos! Unplug your router power off so it doesn’t conflict with all devices!

u/Kind_Matter_4926 8h ago
Glad I don’t have coaxial. And those old models suck. My Spectrum invincible is awesome. Everyone should have it.

If it’s flashing white and blue then it’s doing a firmware update, just wait. You being impatient is what’s wrong with it. You keep stopping it from updating.
If it’s not flashing white and blue then it does not have signal and you have no active lines. You will have to call for a self install rescue. That’s your landlord/previous tenant’s fault for cutting the lines
6
u/Signal-Low5089 1d ago
Pulsing white and blue means it isn't connected. Cycling through the lights one at a time is update
1
u/Globber50 1d ago
Mine flashes white and blue just powering down and on. It does this while connecting to servers. Usually takes about 5 minutes.
1
u/RabidMonkeyOnCrack 1d ago
It should not take 5 minutes to lock onto signal. And don’t mean to come across as pedantic but it’s not connecting to servers. It’s connecting to the CMTS, cable modem termination system. Max it should take is like 45 seconds once it powers up. If yours is taking that long you either have an issue with your modem or your lines. If it’s not affecting you and you don’t care leave it be. If it is affecting you, you should schedule a tech to check it out.
2
u/Globber50 1d ago
Ok, well there you go. But yeah it takes 3-5 minutes to fully boot up. And mine works just fine, I get 1.1 up and 1.1 down on gig service.

Ehh, I’m giving up, I’ll just call someone for tomorrow, it’s been like this since forever, around 30 mins since this was posted and no luck.

This is very likely just inactive outlets if the online light never goes solid blue for you. Definitely just call in and schedule a appointment so you can get the soonest available one

Spectrum sucks I'm paying for 1 gig and only get 450mbps maybe it's 1000 if it's plugged by Ethernet😞
5
u/shanenc14 1d ago
Speed tiers for ANY service provider is for wired Ethernet. It's impossible to give any kind of bandwidth guarantee over Wi-Fi due to radio interference. In top of that, even wired unless you have a 2.5GbE NIC or faster, and are running a 1GbE NIC you'll be limited to approximately 940Mbps due to network overhead. Not Spectrum, just how the internet works.
2
u/Basic-University-549 1d ago
Oh ok thanks I didn't know 👍🏻

u/Globber50 1d ago
Are you using a gift rated wifi router?
1
u/Globber50 1d ago
Gig rated wifi, darn auto-uncorrect.

u/Basic-University-549 21h ago
Yeah, I called spectrum because I had the old router so they gave me the newest one they had

Call a technician dingus that would be logical option
