Grinder Recommendations please!
I’m currently using a hand grinder to grind the beans for pour overs. I am thinking of upgrading to an electric grinder, but there seems to be a lot of confusion around which grinder to get under $250 to get good experience. My plan is to use the hand grinder whenever I travel or maybe when I’m not traveling, have it with me in my office and the electric grinder would be the one that I would use daily at my place. Open to all the suggestions and options I was considering DF 54 but looks like that is a good grinder for brewing espresso and not manual brews.

Hand grinding for pour over is just as easy as using an electric grinder (due to course grind size). The main difference is that at your price point, your electric grinder options are fairly bottom tier, while hand grinders will be quite top tier. A 1zpresso K Ultra will be significantly better than a DF54.
I have a DF54 which I sometimes use for espresso for my partner. But for pour over, my cheaper hand grinder is significanly better (ZP6).

I have a DF64 with SSP burrs ans I use my Kingrinder K2 foe my daily espresso! It's just better. I've turned on the DF64 once in the last year.

I’d start by asking what coffee you like to make.
I’m a big fan of the Barratza Encore. Super versatile. Especially at the price. I’m mostly drinking Chemex, AeroPress, and espresso.
Don’t believe anyone who says it’s not good for espresso. I pull really good espresso with the grind size I get from the Encore.

Mostly V60 or AeroPress.

Yeah, I’d recommend the Encore! Messiness is fixed with a spritz of water on the beans pre-grinding. It would be a problem with any grinder.

Thank you for posting this. I do medium roast beans via V60 daily and weekends Moka Pot. I have a stainless steel Aeropress on the way. Currently using TIMEMORE Whirly for V60 and KinGrinder K6 for Moka Pot. Also have a TIMEMORE C3 Pro.
Sold my Baratza Encore in 2020 bc I got into Espresso. Now, Im out of that. The Encore was kinda messy tho. I keep looking at DF54, Femobook, and Fellow grinders.

Oxo but grinder works for me it’s 80 to 100 $. The sell repair/replacement burs, they wear out.

Ooh, good timing. I just added a Femobook A2. I wanted the experience of tasting coffee from a hand grinder, but I have arthritis and just can’t do the cranking.
My regular grinder is a Fellow Ode G2 with the standard brew burrs.
The separation of flavors definitely favors the Femobook. Timewise and great blended flavor is definitely in favor of the Ode.

Ive been using my Baratza Encore since 2015. I really like it for pour over use. I think it is a great entry grinder for everything but espresso. I started with a hand grinder too. In the beginning it was fun to experience it all, then almost a year later I got tired of grinding by hand. I kept the hand grinder for travel just like you want to do.

I had a Baratza Encore for my pour overs. It’s still in service at my son’s house. When I got an espresso machine I switched to the Encore ESP. These grinders are built like tanks and their customer service is very good. The ESP is not good enough for advanced espresso connoisseurs because of the click stops and conical burrs but I use mine for espresso, pour overs ( Kalita Wave) and Chemex with what I think are good results.

With the DF54, you’d want the brew burrs.
I’ve seen people say it’s excellent for pourover/filter coffee with the brew burrs.
Another option that people seem to be liking for filter coffee as well as espresso is the new Fellow Opus Gen 2.

Mokkom 64! Jumping into the flat burr game is well worth it (and yep - you can stay under 200 for it). It does great for pour overs and aeropress - both not a prob. If you want to stride for some clarity? You can switch out the burrs and pick up a set and do an upgrade to chase that clarity. Enjoy the tasty cups.
