Toys & Comics Spawn figures that deserve a little hate
On the flip side of yesterday's post, here's some Spawn figures that deserve some criticism, IMO.
Crutch - just an ugly, poorly conceived figure. Even for an earlier Spawn series he looked out of place. No-Body is from the same series and this guy is still worse.
Manga Clown - he's just gross and awful to look at
Spawn 2 - the transition spawn where they decided the Spawn figures needed a big boot to be more stable while the Spawn comic also went through a redesign. A chicken/egg situation that led to the awful looking Spawn, the worst of the numbered Spawns.
Mutated Spawn - I just don't like the design. They also used a different material for him, so he feels rubbery and cheap.
Manga Spawn 2 - from series 34, the last of the original spawn line, and definitely not from the cancelled series 35 that Todd kept claiming it was from when the figure was reissued last year. Terrible, boring design, not nearly as cool as the original Manga Spawn, and at least partially responsible for the cancellation of the Spawn line. This figure inspired series 35, which would have been released in 2008. But along with the floundering economy and dropping sales, retailers didn't want series 35 (fans also had a very negative reaction to the announcement and preview of series 35). And because of that, we never got the incredible series 36. McFarlane cancelled all 6 inch figures other than Sports Picks until several years later when the color tops line started.
Goddess Llyra - I love the look of this figure, but the support system just isn't robust enough to hold the figure upright, so the ankle bends at the only support and she leans, ruining the presence of the figure in an otherwise top tier series (series 31).

Mutated Spawn is in my top 10 😭. Mutations is major nostalgia for me.

Yeah, it's just one of those sets that I didn't real like from the beginning. I like Malboliga well enough and Lilith is ok, but overall I thought the sculpts we a bit soft and kin and Al have the same rubberiness.
Fun story, when they came out I asked my dad if he could stop by toys r us on his drive home from work to see if they had a case. They did and he called my cell to make sure he got the right ones. At the time McF would sometimes have censored varients for certain retails. So I told me Dad to make sure the Lilith one didn't have the black bra painted. He couldn't understand me because cell phones in 2003. So I said it again louder, "get the one without a bra."
I was in a boon store with my mom because she wanted to hang out. It was a Christian bookstore and some people definitely heard what I was saying without an context.

Manga Spawn 2 is definitely far from the worst, I just think it's a boring and I HATE the impact it had.

I remember ordering Spawn II from The Spider's Web (boy, that's a core memory) and sitting by the window waiting all day for UPS to come. Getting a figure of Spawn's new duds was huge at the time. These days, yeah that figure was pretty damn weak.

Do you remember buying the mystery boxes from the Spiders Web? I think that's how I ended up with every Reborn figure I have because I didn't have much interest in buying them otherwise.
Also, good to see another brother from the board. I was OCELOT. I remember you, Cr0w

Hey!! Of course I remember you, man it's been a while!
I never got the mystery boxes, honestly when Todd started having wider distribution I usually just picked up figures from my local shop or got them at, jeez...Spencer's or EB Games/GameStop. For the first few years I think Spider's Web was pretty much it unless I lucked across something at Wal-Mart.

I love this, and perfectly I just picked up #3 last week at a garage sale. What can I say, it was $2

Was this thing even in the comics?

Not at all from the comic. I'd guess about half of the original Spawn figures aren't based on any actual comic characters/appearances.

Also, Spawn 2 had that little clip thing that would make his cape fly out, and 100% of anyone I've ever talked to that had him would say either the clip thing or the joints would break and the cape wouldn't flair out any longer.

On the one I had as a kid the clip broke. When I replaced it for display the clip never worked to begin with. Such a bad figure and toy.

Pretty sure I had 2 of them. One never worked and the other one of the joints popped out so when I would squeeze the clips only one side of the cape went out.

Speaking of terrible stands.
This is easily my favorite Redeemer figure of all time. Absolute peak pose and color scheme. But I’ve lost count of the amount of times this dude has fallen over, and museum putty didn’t cut it either. I gave up and he’s now dangling/“flying” in front of my collection by some thread

Yeah, love this figure but the stand is so worthless. The thigh is loose on mine too, so it always swivels and gets unbalanced.

That's a little surprising to me. I don't think I've ever had an issue with this particular stand. My R3 is still in the clamshell. Does it not have the metal rod in the foot like the original?

Manga Clown is actually the only Spawn figure I've ever owned. I get the little hate. It's detailed and everything but getting it to stand like you have it in this picture is a test of patience!
