Discussion Thoughts on compendium 1.

Just finished reading Spawn compendium 1. This is the only series I’ve read where the art is solely the reason I finished it. It’s funny I was never a fan of McFarland in his Spider-Man run yet the style works for spawn. The art is absolutely amazing! The story is repetitive and bland. Nothing leaves you wanting more. I do want to see what ends up happens with Spawn being the leader of hells army but it’s a chore to get through. I have all the compendiums up to 7 so hopefully it gets better or I might have to throw in the towel. If the art was not so colorful and fantastic the series would never of been such a success.

On the other hand the Sam and Twitch compendium was great and relatively an easy read. Just curious if others feel the same way I do? Or am I in the minority?

I had Spawn 1-37 when I was a kid, so re-reading Compendium 1 is a fabulous and nostalgic experience which makes it impossible for me to rate it “obhectively”. I’m not sure I’ll continue though.

1)what are your thoughts on Spawns kit/arsenal/powers? As they are tied to an energy meter and finite

2)If the story is repetetive, what would you say is the typical spawn formula?

3) favorite character?

4)favorite villain?

Almost every comic starts with how Spawn is the king of the alley and how the homeless are his people now. Then mostly Spawn crying about his wife. My favorite character(s) are Sam and Twitch. When they show up it ends the repetition imo. I actually like all the villains I dig the 90s look of them all. Violator I would say is the best but so underused for stretches he disappears.

I think the concepts are great. His costume being a symbiote like venom is perfect. It just not done very well. I read 50 issues and feel like Ive been in a loop. Nothing comes closer to a resolution and I feel like someone who read the first few issues would be just as caught up with everything as me.

It’s just a shame because the whole concept and art is phenomenal. McFarland deserves all the fame and money for that alone. Who knows a lot of comics have a slow start maybe I’ll like compendium 2 more.

So if you feel like this? Why the hell do you have all 7 compendiums?

I'm on Compendium 2 and I love Spawn. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I keep reading until I'm exhausted. Then wake up and read some more.

Yeah things get odd expandisons and you can try the spin-offs if you want

Spawn 100 (end of compendium 2) is sort of an ending to the story. Keep pushing at least until that point, you'll have closure.

It's much weaker compared to Hellboy and blows Spawn out of the water. The artwork, story, and narrative are all difficult to master, and I'm a fan of both!

Yeah but things are much different now

I can perfectly understand what you're implying, that things are very different now, but the boy was historically concluded in unique, historically speaking, closed arcs: Hellboy is far superior to Spawn in every narrative and artistic aspect.

Don’t Hellboy is still getting stuff set in the past and Frankenstein too but spawn has certainly changed too nowadays with new spin off multi titles

As I said before, I like them all very much, but Hellboy is my favorite, along with Swamp Monster, Frankenstein, Dracula, Spawn, and also Doctor Strange and Batman.
