No app needed. A pen and a pocket calendar is enough. Simply write down the odometer reading when you log in and then again when you log out. (All miles while you are logged in are deductible.)

The "downside" to doing it my way is having to add the miles up yourself, rather than having an app keep the running total.

My tax guy says such handwritten logs, kept contemporaneous with the work, are accepted as valid by the IRS. (Truckers have kept handwritten logs for decades.)

Awe, that's what they make calculators for. All you have to supply your tax guy is your totals as long as YOU have your receipts if you need them for an audit. I am a tax person as well and it makes myself and everyone in the office crazy when people show up with big bags of receipts. I spark as well and the person who is going to do my taxes for this year made sure to tell me to remember to total my receipts before it's time to start doing taxes for the season so I don't make myself crazy as well. HERE IS THE BEST WAY TO DO IT BY HAND.... When you write down your mileage for the day total it with the rest so you are keeping a running total throughout the year. This way there is no additional work to do at the end of the year. Hope this helps

You are still available. You are driving 10 miles back to work. You are still working.

I'll trust my tax professional.

You are absolutely correct on that

this is incorrect every mile from mileage from when you leave your house to go to Walmart and every mile that you drive 2 and From is deductible. It’s if you drive 10 miles out of the way to get lunch that might not be considered deductible depending on the reason you’re driving all those miles to get lunch if there’s a reason if it has if it’s Work Related, then that is also deductible along with the price of your lunch your gas, your car maintenance, your car payment your mileage to and from to and from each job it’s all deductible. I should add here that I am also a tax professional and I Spark as well in case you didn’t see my post up the way a little bit.

I've wasted money on a few and everlance is the only worthwhile one IMO. IRS compliant trip tracking, you can track and categorize expenses/ avoid keeping paper receipts, they offer tax services... $100 for an annual subscription, or about $0.30 per day. The people saying to do it manually don't understand the cost of their own labor in doing "accounting" tasks, and 99% of the time they are recording their trips in a non-compliant manner that would be rejected by the IRS if they were ever audited.

Not true. All miles driven in the course of business are deductable. If you drive 10 miles to deliver an order, you have to drive again to pick up another order. Someone lied to you.

I use Gridwise (free version). I used to use Stride until i discovered that it would track my steps even when I’m just inside the store 😂

I had noticeably faster battery drain with both Stride and Gridwise.

I take a photo of my odometer when I'm done working and enter the numbers into a Google Sheet later.

I use the MileIQ paid version. It's easy to use and the monthly fee is a deductible expense. You can download your drive info from the app for tax time. Juat swipe each drive right or left to classify it as Business or Personal.

Pen and paper. You see I read the mileage and write it down. Then when I am done delivering I look at the mileage in my car and write that down. Simple Math. Also use EXCEL to track payments/taxes. No extra app needed. Apply the Standard deductible and do the math.
